It costs money anyway. You have to buy the game, Pay your ISP, and gold membership if you're on xbox, maybe even an online pass for used games - and that's not including all the chips and fizzy drinks you need.

That's cute.

Buy the game? - Your paying for the single player
Pay your ISP? - Your paying for your internet for porn
Gold membership? - You're paying for the service Xbox has to offer.
Snacks - Optional.

You are not paying to play the online. The online is not and will not be subscription based thus free. If GTA:O became subscription based down the line it would have to offer a hell of a lot more for me to pay to play it. I'm not completely against the idea but not to found of it either. I have the same feels with Elder Scrolls: Online.

Actually when you buy the game, you're paying for Single Play & Multiplayer.

I don't see rockstar to be the type of company to do something like this.

imo there is a reason, why they called this GTA Online, and not GTA V Online. I wouldn't be suprised, if this really would be a new approach to the "multiplayer" in a sanbox game, a whole different game. so yea, my wild guess - extra $$$ will be necessary.

Why are you people acting like this is a separate game? GTA V multiplayer is GTA V. Its part of the f*cking game. God, these forums are getting stupider every day.

There's been nothing to suggest it will other than a few people getting worried on here. No leaks, no website speculation - nothing. If by some stroke of coincidence, it does turn out to be the case, I'll skip it but I'm not worried at all that it will have a fee.

I do pay to play GTA online... it's called an Xbox Live Gold membership.

Yeah, and you pay electricity as well, but the point is, besides gold membership, do you have to pay a Rockstar membership fee?

This doesn't make sense to me -- so I would get double charged to play online? The only thing that makes sense in this scenario is if you're asking if PSN users would be forced to pay in order to play online.

But other than that, why would Rockstar charge Xbox Live users again? I'm pretty sure almost no one would pay twice. GTA online is fun, but it's not that fun.

Honestly, IMO, GTA IV online is not even worth buying Xbox Live for -- if it weren't for the other games I play online consistently, I probably would never have played GTA online.

I believe MMO games on consoles can be played without paying a subscription fee to Xbox live. You'll still need to pay a subscription fee for the game. I could be wrong though but I'm basing it off on what they are doing the the PS4 and I assume Xbox one.

If they're using their own servers and coming up with new content, and had a large dedicated team to deal with online modders, I don't see a problem with a subscription or F2P model to support this.

This. Rockstar can kiss my ass if they want money for online. The ONLY reason people pay for MMOs is because of the massive server and bandwidth toll they take for providing that high quality network experience. I bet my f*cking boots that GTA O will still be client based hosting. Charging for that on top of f*cking Xbox live would be retarded and a serious blow to the industry.

Exactly this. Those who thought laggy GTA IV multiplayer was a good experience... well, stick to GTA IV multiplayer. If GTA Online is as "revolutionary to online open world games as GTA III was to singleplayer open world games" (quote from Rockstar, I'm not making this up), then it's very conceivable that GTAO will be a fully fledged MMO with proper dedicated servers and lots of bandwidth. Now there might still be client based hosting for those who don't want to pay a subscription, but the difference would be that client based hosting would only allow the standard 16 players and would depend on the host's bandwidth for smoothness. GTAO would be massive amounts of players with no lag.

I believe GTA Online will be a mix of servers: the regular *free ones that GTA IV had and dedicated servers that you'll pay a subscription fee for. If their are dedicated servers, I wouldn't mind paying the fee if it means I can finally play without having to deal with hackers/cheaters.

No way Rockstar starts a subscription service on console much closer to the end of their life-cycles, than the beginning.

Simply no way.

They are almost definitely making the next gen ports (and potentially PC as well) right as we speak. The subscription service can carry over to any version of the game you play. If you buy the PS4 version when it comes out you'll be able to reconnect to the same account you've been building on your PS3 or Xbox 360. Nothing lost.

People do not understand why Online games like this are subscription only, the revenue helps fix bugs and ass cool stuff for years to come. Hasn't anyone played an MMO before? SO either way if it cost money or doesn't who cares honestly?

I don't think you'll have to pay a subscription, but if for some reason they decide to use the same scheme of the "Play for Free" Online games (Pay to Win" ... I wont play it, there is enough crap like that already. But I'm hopping that won't be the case. The fact that they say it's GTA Online and not GTA V Online might be because they'll keep supporting and updating the game content, like other companies do and this is the best strategy (that I mentioned here long time ago) to prevent people from using pirated copies. With a game server that gets updates and new content, people will have to buy the game to have a legal license to play online.

Fair enough. I actually think the same as you. GTA V won't be a subscription based MMO. If it was it would be sold separate.

Its obviously free. Rockstar wouldn't advertise that you can drop in and out of multiplayer unless it was free. Use simple logic.
