2006 Volvo s40-$8840-143,000 miles

The Mercedes sounds about best. But make sure you take a look at the car fax of those last two, I would knock the first one out. Got to be smart about this, you could be paying enough you can afford, but the repairs can be overwhelming, I had a 2001 Oldmobile Bravado I spent 9k on.. spent 9k on repairs along with it.. End up trading it in because it started failing to start, and needed new brakes. So yea, look on the car fax for best... if they are the same, choose the Mercedes for that higher gas milage.

Volvo S40. Same price, lower mileage, and a newer model.

This. The S40 will be a much better choice than any of these.

Mid noughties Mercs still hadn't properly recovered from their serious reliability blip in the late 90s. The Wrangler is completely different to the others but seriously overpriced in comparison. S40 is the best bet.

Don't get the Mercedes, that's for sure. Terrible build quality and reliability for that era, and the parts will cost a bomb.

This. 2000s beginnings Mercs are terribly built, lots of electronical faults and even rust. The Volvo sounds the best really. Don't know what to say about the Wrangler, i would only suggest it when you truly need an offroad car. Otherwise it would get expensive. Volvo at least is more reliable.

I would not trust a Wrangler with 140k. Volvo is probably your best bet for reliability on that list.

I'd go for the Volvo. Probably the most reliable car on that list.

Yeah I would probably vote for the Volvo too. I am a huge Mercedes fan, but I wouldn't go with a C-class......

Out of the 3, go for the Volvo. The Mercedes has had problems in the past with the engine. I wouldn't trust the Jeep with 140k miles, either. Especially not for that much. o.O

I think Volvo s40 would be great choice . It has outstanding fuel economy, great looks, good Performance and handling. The S40 is well designed and built and that means a reliable run for the most part. There are no serious flaws that afflict it; the things that tend to go wrong are fairly minor and individual. Volvos tend to be well looked after by caring owners, which can make them a good used buy. Overall it has nice appearance, really confortable as well as exelent performance.

Old topic, but I've got to ask, why not?

If it's a 4.0/5 speed TJ, I would expect it to outlive either of the other two by a big margin. Change either of those factors, though (4.0 to 2.5 or 5 speed to auto), and my answer changes. They're pretty reliable from what I've seen as well. At least much more so than mid 2000's Volvos and Mercs.  :/

Any kind of Wrangler is going to have "the Jeep tax" and always be massively overpriced for the year/spec/shape it's in.
