Why did R* make the protagonist look like the voice actors? I mean Niko Bellic didn't look like Michael Hollick or Tommy Vercetti didn't look like Ray Liotta...

Why did R* does this? I don't real care just curious why R* did this.

Actually it's hard to tell whether or not Tommy looks like Ray Liotta, because of the relatively simple graphics. He doesn't look all that different, though, although you can't see some of Liotta's more distinctive features. However, CJ looks a hell of a lot like Young Maylay. Honestly, Niko Bellic is the odd one out, here.

Niko Bellic did fit IMO and all these previous protagonists did.

I really don't believe Franklin's voice actor is Shawn Fonteno. I mean, if Micheal and Trevor look so much like their voice actor, why not Franklin?
Anyway, remember the voice actors could be anyone, maybe someone who don't sound like them with their normal voice.

He actually does. Shawn is just more heavy set, but as far as facial features go, he's as much of a match as Ned Luke and Steven Ogg. It's him if he lost some weight.

Note that none of them are exact, especially at this point after there's been a lot of character model tweaking. Mike looks younger now, less baby-faced than Luke, Trevor looks less thin and gaunt than Ogg, and of course Franklin is thinner than Fonteno.

We could always be wrong, but they've all been the consensus for a while now. It just remains to be seen if we're right.

Exactly what I am saying. If you compare Ned Luke and Michael, there is no difference at all. With Trevor, only the facial hair differs. But Franklin and Shawn Fonteno, it wouldn't be possible to make them exactly the same. If you understand what I mean.

@omer19992010, I didn't say he doesn't sound like him.

Actually I mentioned the others as well. Michael is younger-looking than Ned Luke now, perhaps not in Trailer 2 but definitely in the character trailers and the recent gameplay trailer. Trevor is also bulkier and less gaunt than his counterpart.

It's really something all kinds of animators do. Facial motion capture works best when the characters look similar to their voice actors. It works fine when they don't, but it achieves a natural look most easily that way. Even when the characters look quite different from their actors, they still retain much of the same mouth and eye shape, any of the most dynamic parts of the face. Things like noses, ears, etc. can be completely different, but usually that's how it's done. Take a look at Niko Bellic and Michael Hollick together again sometime: they have the same mouth. Niko's based on the Russian guy in Behind Enemy Lines, but some of his features were changed to better match Hollick's for the sake of motion capture. These days, it's a good way to make characters who just plain look like real people, instead of caricatures or stereotypes. And often there will be a mixture of both. In IV, some characters looked a lot like their voice actors, and some didn't look like them at all. Characters often take aesthetic inspiration from their actors when the creators decide that their look better fits the personality than what they came up with, or things can become a mixture of the two. It's been kind of a trend in the gaming industry to making the characters look like the voice actors, but it has always existed and there's reasons for it.

I guess Rockstar views their voice actors as more than simply voice-only actors. And maybe there is some sort of theory or something that shows a voice seems more natural if it is coming from someone/something who looks similar to the actual source of the voice.

This seems to be an approach Rockstar have taken since L.A Noire (yes, I know Team Bondi developed it). Keep in mind that Max in Max Payne 3 was heavily modeled after James McCaffrey (his voice actor).

I think R* pay for the rights of the person so use there appearance and voice. It just makes things more easy to use a voice of said person then scan them into the game so to speak. The lip sync and facial expressions I'd imagine will also be better been as there from the real life person when they deliver the voice work. This is just a guess on my part though.

Because of their new technology from LA Noire, and Epsilon program...remember, capture your face and you'll be in the game? I don't think they had this technology RDR and before.

They're not using LA Noire's facial motion capture technology. They're just using the same thing they used for IV, RDR, and MP3. I know because of the trailers.

They're using the same tech they've used since IV, I left a link to what they used in my previous post.
