Examples I heard of are:

someone's uncle called a Wii an iPod
someone's dad calls the internet Yahoo

And infamously, this:

Nah, I talk about gaming too much so my parents know which is which. Even with electronics, I usually tell them whats what at a store.

My parents just call them "consoles".
They don't want to know which is which.

My parents, and even I (back when I owned nothing more than a SNES and a GBC), used to use the word "Nintendo" as a catch-all term for consoles. However, this was quite a few years ago already. Everybody now knows the consoles by their actual names.

The "Nintendo" thing isn't too surprising either. Nintendo used to dominate the video game market, and thus the Nintendo platforms used to be the most common gaming consoles in households.

I haven't really had this issue, one of my Aunt's does believe all games are on Playstation, she hasn't called any console the wrong name, but whenever she mentions me and playing games she will say; "Bet you can't wait to get home and play the Playstation"
"Make sure you get the grades, don't play too much Playstation." (When I was in school obviously)

I'm Jamaican, so my parents call everything "PlayStation" or "Gameboy". I think it's pretty funny.

Old people in my country only know about Sony PlayStation. But they don't knot that it's called a PlayStation. They just know that it's made by Sony so they call it a Sony. So every gaming system is a Sony for them.

My mom used to refer to every console that wasn't an NES or Wii as a "game."

"zoo3891, put your game in your pillow sack, your dad's here to pick you up."

She knew NES because she grew up with that one in the house, and a Wii because everyone knows a Wii. She also referred to extra lives as "extra men" which is apparently common. Didn't stop me from laughing the first time she said it. biggrin.gif

I don't talk about gaming to my aunts/uncles or parents but I do with my friends. They always assume that any handheld console is a PSP example the DS as a PSP.

My dad knows what a Wii, Xbox 360 and PS3 are. My mum is coming to terms with the fact I swapped my 360 for a PS3 so every time she asks about what I've played today or something like that she'll slowly say Xbox Playstation thing. Its kind of funny. She knows what a PS4 is though since I always tease her that she's going to buy it for me when its out (which is a lie, but its funny to see her wince)

My parents know the difference between them, as there are 3 PS3s, 1 PS2, 1 Xbox 360 and 1 Wii in my house-hold. Although the only one they've used is the Wii.

I've had PS station before, from my dad. So what he was doing was basically calling it the Playstation station. He's got the hang of it now though. My mum was always pretty good with the names, she knew the Playstation and PS2 and PS3 and could tell the difference between them. She was way better than my dad with the names, which is quite surprising since I'd often play my dad and still do sometimes, yet my mum only touched the controllers when she was moving them to clean something.

There was actually a problem when I switched from the original Playstation 2 to the slim version, and my mum thought it was the PS3. And again when I switched from the PS3 original version to the slim, and she thought it was the PS4.

I remember my dad used to call any console a "computer", he probably still does. Technically he was right at least.

This topic reminds me so heavily of this John Bishop segment on his stand up show. Skips too around 2:00 to get to the Xbox part's classic haha:

My mom used to call my Xbox 360 a computer as well because it used the same monitor as my computer. Now she can tell the difference. She doesn't use the 360, which means if I get an xbox one she'd still call it Xbox.

As for Apple computers, she thinks Windows PC's are called computers, so she would call any Apple PC an "Apple". MacBook? a "Apple Laptop".

Mobile Devices! She knows the names of Apple devices like iphone and ipad, but for Android... She calls my Samsung simply a "phone" and then when I told her I was getting an Asus tablet, she was referring it as Tablet when she talks to me about it. But at least she's probably smarter than anyone else. No offence
