Ohmahgawd a new car from me cry.gif

Well, I didn't have a internet connection for a while after moving to the UK so I had plenty of time to start another project. Its the first generation of the Oldsmobile Aurora, General Motors last attempt to save its once extremely popular Oldsmobile brand after it lost huge amounts of market share in the late 80s and early 90s. Unfortunately, they couldn't reverse the downfall of Oldsmobile, even though the Aurora was a fantastic, extremely distinctive looking V8 luxury sports sedan for its time that didn't have to hide from it competitors when it comes to handing and refinement (yes, for its time it had good material quality and fit and finish tounge.gif ). Pricing seemed too high though, most people didn't wanna pay that much for a domestic car so it didn't sell as well as the people at GM hoped for, and eventually the brand was shut down in 2004 after 107 years in business.

I always liked the 1st gen Aurora, but its under appreciated by most. The fact that after almost 20 years its not the most reliable car thanks to common problems with its electrical systems doesn't help either. I'd still love to own one (especially one in dark red or black with the Autobahn package), should I ever find a late model one in good condition at a fair price, I think I'll have to buy it tounge.gif

I started the model weeks ago, its actually based on a shell I found on my harddrive (probably from google warehouse). Since it was only a basic, somewhat messed up shell of the car I invested a lot of time to clean up the mesh, and add tons of details, get rid of unnecessary polygons and add them where they are needed. The proportion were spot on though, and thats what counted to me. I also remodeled the wheels and baked a normalmap for them, added the engine, lights, undercarriage, interior and lots of other things to create a proper model.

My goal is to keep the car as game-friendly as possible. Which means I try to reuse as many of GTA IVs generic vehicle textures and as few polygons and custom textures as possible. Right now I am only using 3 textures for the whole car that aren't from the game, which are the rims, interior and a misc texture that contains the engine, plastic and chrome and lights. I dont expect to create another one since stuff like the badges should fit on there. The polycount is at about 35k triangles which is about twice that of a regular GTA car, ofcourse I will create proper LOD versions as well. All of this should squeeze both the .wft and .wdt way under 1Mb, probably even under 500kb. That means no taxi bug in sight. biggrin.gif

Here are a couple of screenshots taken out of 3ds Max, those are not renders.

Still a couple of things left to do, all the lights glass stuff needs a texture, badges are still missing and I still have to bake AO into the vertex colors. Before I do that I will have to do couple of tests though to make sure Zmodeler2 keeps the vertex data and doesn't mess everything up.

C&C always appreciated. smile.gif

Great modeling. Only problem is though I really wanted the second generation olds. This still looks awesome so far.

Dude, as soon as I saw it...

Beautiful work so far, I always liked the Oldsmobile designs, a shame it went to bankruptcy. A morning some weeks back I saw a grey one (I think it was a 4dr Alero tho) running under the rain and man, it was the nicest car in traffic... It will be probably the only modern car I'll have installed in my GTA IV smile.gif

Keep it up!!! colgate.gif

I always liked those cars as well. And the Intrigue, Alero etc.. They were so futuristic when they first came out. It's what everyone in the 90's thought cars from now would look like. I remember seeing the original concepts in Automobile mag when I was a kid, and I thought they would never actually build that. Wasn't there something like that in Demolition Man?

Are you using normal maps for the door jamb/fender structure or is that modeled out?

Teach me how to render my cars like that smile.gif I can get my cars into Max, but max's material editor may as well be in Japanese to me, I can't set it up to make anything decent wink.gif

allways like that you makin those us cars for sa, they fit so nicely in them, and they allways top quality.
got to say that such a beauty car, desgin is amazing so does the engine and handling .
i wobder if you would consider making a 1995-1999 chevy lumina, a very commen car
and probaly well knowen cuz it was before the impla and also serves as police and taxi car.
if you decied to make one , please make her with the buick L36 V6 series 2 engine in LTZ trim, could be a very nice to have her in sa or iv .
you can use the base mesh from 3dclub.com , im sure you know this site.

Indeed, though in my opinion these cars still looks kinda futuristic. Just look at the Lincoln Mark VIII. I'd have loved to see how, if they had continued developing this kind of designs, would now american cars be inlove.gif

Here is the IMCDB page for Demolition Man, curious how that movie used all these GM concept cars (the Cadillac Voyage looks beautiful, imo): http://imcdb.org/movie.php?id=106697

Btw Burner, are you still into modding? smile.gif

Yeah, Demolition man had quite a few GM concept cars in the background, one of them was the Cadillac Aurora. It might look somewhat similar but it wasn't the basis for the Olds Aurora.

I am using GTA IVs standart "doorshut" normalmap to save memory, I don't want my car to turn LCs traffic completely into Taxis. biggrin.gif The normalmap of the rims is baked in xNormal using a highpoly model as source though.

The images aren't exactly rendered, they are screenshots taken directly out of Max's viewport. I am using Xoliuls realtime shader. It should work best with 3ds Max 2010, you can get it here for free, youll also find some good video tutorials for how to use it.

Haha yeah, I would've loved to see a successor for the Mark VIII, especially right now when most of Lincolns vehicle lineup consists of slightly more expensive Ford Fusions and Taurus'. I don't think the MKS/MKZ and MKT are bad cars, buts my decisionwould be pretty clear if I had to decide between those and a ATS/CTS. Lincoln needs a new flagship based on the Mustang platform, otherwise there won't be too much hope for them I'm afraid.

Btw I LOVE the Cadillac Voyage sedan. Probably because it reminds me of the last generation B-body Caprice and Fleetwood which are both at the very top of my wishlist. I saved the few reference photos I could find a while ago, maybe I'll model one in the future. The problem is, there are other cars on the list and it seems I'm always interested in modeling the ones first that are most unlikely to be modeled by me first. whatsthat.gif Otherwise I would have released a completely scratch made remake of my Mark VIII ages ago.

I love to see that you are still creating mods! I also really like the car itself, and of course you did an amazing job on the model, as always. If you need anyone to convert it to San Andreas, just hit me up smile.gif

Thanks for the kind comments guys biggrin.gif

The model is now complete. I added all the badging and textured the lights. Only the AO baking (and L1/L2 model) is left but I will have to get back into Zmodeler again and see if the whole process is working like I imagined. Originally I wanted to convert the car to GTA IV myself but I am not sure if I wanna go through the pain, it probably would push the release date back further, too tounge.gif

@Chezy: Send me an Email if youd like to convert it, I think its pretty much ready for San Andreas, I might have to bake an AO map for it though since GTA SA doesnt support vertex colors.

No, its distinctive. biggrin.gif

I will create both lower LOD models this weekend if I have time, maybe I'll also see if I can get some test object into the game.

There are still tons of cars on my list, but its always depending on my mood/time. If you do practically the same everyday for work you sometimes wanna spend your time with something else, even if you love doing it. smile.gif

Make a Reliant Robin wink.gif I don't think anyone has made that for a game yet, hehe.

Thanks for the links. Unfortunately I got Max 13, which that realtime reflections wont ever support, according to the main programmer. Arrg. Oh well wink.gif

"I am using GTA IVs standart "doorshut" normalmap to save memory, I don't want my car to turn LCs traffic completely into Taxis"

So now I know what causes all the traffic to turn into taxis. I wondered why that would happen but never looked into it.

Roadrunner: Yep. Only I call it 'work' now wink.gif Only about 1/4th is cars, the other 3/4 is quite varied.

Haha, not true. In fact, you will find a model of a Reliant Robin for GTA in this very forum biggrin.gif

Yeah, the taxi bug is caused by cars using too much memory. GTA is only allowed to use a certain "size" of memory (dunno if its just an engine limitation which I doubt or a limit Rockstar set for GTA IVs PC version, maybe even a separate limit just for the cars). The more polygons/textures you use, the larger are your car files. If the game cant load any new models into the memory (because one inefficient model uses the space for 10 other separate cars), the games starts spawning Taxis only (because thats one of the few models you would see in LC quite often anyway and are prioritized).

Thats some pretty basic stuff, and its a shame most people don't know/ignore it and mess up the game.

@Nomadvicki: There are quite a few:

1990 Infiniti Q45 (Emperor in GTA SA)
1996 Lincoln Mark VIII LSC (my current car, already modeled a lowpoly version of it)
1996 Cadillac Fleetwood
1990 Ford Taurus SHO and 1990 Lexus LS400 (got detailed models of them already, not sure if I am allowed to convert them to GTA tho since I modeled them for another project)
1993 Mazda Xedos6/Eunos 500 (my current beater car that really grew on me)
1998 Mercedes CL500 (theres a pretty nice model of it already available for GTA IV)
1996 Mercury Sable sedan and 2003 Cadillac Escalade EXT (got models of both as well, they need some work though)
2003 Chevy Corvette C5 Targa
1997 Chevy Camaro Z28 and Pontiac Firebird Formula
1990 Ford Thunderbird SC
maybe a 1993 Mazda 929 (which was the Merit in GTA SA)

So yeah, the list is long and I am not sure if you will see any of these in the game. But Id like to model them and every single one of them would fit into the game.

Anyway, finished the LODs. I know I could have reduced tons of more polygons out of LOD1 but my goal was to cut the polycount by a half without removing too much obvious detail from the exterior. LOD2 is the same polycount as GTA IVs LOD2 model for cars.

user posted image

EDIT: I might have to adjust the mapping on the LOD1 tires a bit. biggrin.gif

Well, there will be a GTA SA version, the GTA IV version wont be based on it though if thats what you mean. I am just not sure who will convert the model to both games yet.

Wow, amazing work on this car. I love Oldsmobiles but mostly ones from the 80s and early 90s. The Aurora is still very nice. I had a hotwheels diecast of it once.

Damn you got some good taste in cars. That generation Thunderbird is in my top 5 list of favorite passenger cars. The Taurus SHO and Fleetwood are also great. If you like the Q45, check out the 3rd gen Buick Regal.

Thanks man. A 3rd gen Regal GS sedan was on my mind as well, I quite like the rear of the 1990-92 ones. There are also the '89-93 and '95-99 Rivieras that I haven't seen for any game yet, the last gen Olds Toronado, the '91-96 Olds 98 supercharged Touring Sedan (already have a lowpoly model of one modeled) and plenty of others (the '83-'97 Mercury Cougars, the prefacelift Mercury Mystiques,...).

Theres plenty of stuff on my mind, I cannot tell which and when I will start the next car, it really depends on how much time I have and what I might find on the web about them that gives me the right mood to start modeling. smile.gif

^ These ideas sound sweet, even if I prefer the 1980's versions of most of then. The Cougar would be quite interesting, after seeing one of these (pre-facelift) Mercury in NYC I fell in love with that car.
