No offence, but that is a terrible comparison. Do you honestly see the RDR map size in that picture fitting 3.5x into the V map size in that picture?
Don't take all of theese comprarisons so literally, man. Also, squares isn't a very good way to comprare sizes.
Area-wise if you took the entire image of the Red Dead Redemption map, there was alot of spaces around the edge of the map that you couldn't get to.
When Rockstar has comprared the size of the map they're talking about the area of it... the playable spaces.
When they said that GTA V will be about as big as San Andreas, GTA IV and Red Dead combined, they're not talking about laying the maps on top of eachother and that they all fit into the GTA V map. They're talking about the general feel and like i said the playable areas. In the original GI article where that comprarison was made they noted that interiors etc. was taken into account when making that comprarison. That's something alot of you here don't seem to get.
The map will still be really big when you get into it, but i think alot of you guys need to lower your expectations a bit.
