Both actors, over the course of their carrers have often been compared to one another due to their similar style of movies, characters they play, era they were most active in and the fact they have had many collaborations.

So I want to know, which one do YOU prefer, Robert De Niro or Al Pacino?

Always a tough question this, but I usually go with De Niro.

The only Pacino films that really stand out for me are The Godfathers, Scarface and Donnie Brasco.

Whereas with De Niro, we also have The Godfather Part 2, as well as Raging Bull, Goodfellas, Casino, Ronin.

Then I look at Heat, and how much more cool and badass De Niro was, albeit he was the films criminal to Pacino's cop, but that's how I feel anyway.

Both great actors either way.

Pretty much what The Scottish guy said. D'Niro has a larger filmography of critically acclaimed films making him a more accessible actor than Al Pacino. Pacino has his moments but he doesn't seem to have much range during the latter part of his career. I seen Silver Linings Playbook and D'Niro is still giving some solid performances.

I'd use them both to make a Pesci sammich.

Loving the Aphex Twin avatar Floyd, f*cking awesome artist icon14.gif

I've got the dvd Righteous Kill (it stars both these guys) which has been sitting in my collection for 4/5 months now that I've yet to watch. I've heard it receive pretty negative reaction but with this thread popping up I think I'll give it a go either tonight or tomorrow night.

Respect them both equally so null vote. I do think that De Niro picks better movies in recent films than Pacino. Also Neither have a role recently that they deserve unfortunatelly.

Al Pacino has a real passion for his craft.
De Niro, on the other hand, seems bored and despondent with acting.

Pacino loves acting and so has mostly avoided the career slump De Niro has experienced. His enthusiasm shines through in everything he does.

I'd say Robert De Niro because he can play a lot more roles than Al Pacino can. Both excellent actors though.

At first I thought it was impossible to decide, but Al Pacino stands out for me.

I guess I can think of more movies starring Pacino that I really like and I like his acting more.

I love them both, Al Pacino is an amazing actor, especially in The Godfather trilogy, Donnie Brasco and Carlito's Way. I've yet to see Scent Of A Woman but I heard he's great in that too. However, I have to go with Bobby D! Taxi Driver, Goodfellas, Casino and Raging Bull are amongst some of my favourite films.

Al Pacino for me. Don't get me wrong, Robert De Niro is a legendary actor, but Al Pacino has definitely won my vote with movies like Scarface and Carlito's Way. I need to watch Heat some time, it has both these legends as part of the cast.

Ouch. Tough call. They are basically two best actors in existence. If I had to choose one I'd go for the actor who's best roles have been more memorable for me personally. And that's De Niro.

say what?

did you see Cape Fear?
what about Men of Honor?
The Good Shepard?
maybe Silver Linings Playbook?

De Niro is not experiencing a slump.
bored and despondent? I don't see it. agree to disagree I guess.

Career slump? Comparing Pacinos filmography to De Niros and you'll probably find statistically De Niro has has more "hits."

Maybe it's his "less is more" approach unlike Pacinos latter work where he seems to spiral in to more theatrical stuff - speaking in a calm tone and then raising his voice every alternate sentence.

D'Niro for me has a much broader range of films and characters. His recent work seems relevant, Silver Linings Playbook is a fine example. He seems to have an extra layer over Pacino for me.

Cape Fear, Casino, Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Ronin, Meet the Parents (to a certain extent), Jackie Brown, Goodfellas, The King of Comedy. De Niro is actually great at doing comedy. I'm not sure Pacino can pull off comedy as well as De Niro.

Pacino just doesn't have that same filmography behind him. He's a damn good actor especially in Scarface and Insomnia or and Carlitos way but he doesn't have the same understated range that De Niro posses.

They're both amazing actors but Al Pacino wins this one. I have to admit that DeNiro has more range but what's that saying about "all your eggs in one basket"? DeNiro can pull off comedy but that's about it, no stand out performances when he does comedy. I feel if you both give them the same role in a movie genre that they're both use to then Al Pacino would just offer more.

The Deer Hunter, Raging Bull, and Taxi Driver. Pacino is one of my favorite actors but he simply can't beat a track record like that

Pacino all the way.

Scarface (1983) is by far my favourite film of all time and I think his career-making performance in it was fantastic and far outweighs any role Robert De Niro has played both as an actor and the given character.

I like to believe that Adam Sandler helped Pacino out of a jam one time, some gambling debts or a dead hooker or something, and in exchange, someday, and that day may never come, he'll call upon Al to do a service for him.
Unfortunately that day did come, and Jack and Jill was made.

Aside from that, Pacino is the boy. His filmography is composed of iconic, cult masterpieces, no doubt because of his performances.

The amount of movies that they've been in doesn't mean anything. It's a very hard question and therefore a very hard question when it comes to the comparison between De Niro and Pacino as they're both amazing actors and have had their share of great and famous roles. The two have even been in a few movies with eachother, including the famous Godfather. I would have to say Pacino because The Godfather, Carlito's Way, Scarface and 88 Minutes are my personal favourite movies and therefore he's going to prevail all of the time over De Niro unless a miracle was to happen and there was movies better than the four, in my opinion, as stated above.

I like De Niro more. He seems to have more range. But to be fair I haven't seen that many Pacino movies.

DeNiro.

Pacino in his older years has become a character of himself in most films. Same mannerisms, demeanor, etc...
DeNiro on the other hand has shown growth, and willingness to take on different roles.

In the younger years I would've chosen Pacino.

Robert De Niro. I've enjoyed watching all of his films very much. Al Pacino is a really good actor, but he's not in as many films as Robert De Niro. There's a wide selection of great De Niro movies.

They are both great actors but on the basis that he is in a wider variety of films, Robert De Niro.

I just watched all the Godfather films all through again, god damn...one of the best trilogies ever made. Al Pacino just knows how to stay in role, while being cold but showing the little emotion and thus creating the perfect Don Corleone. Also Scarface is one of my favourite films, there Pacino plays a totally different character, a much more brutal and energetic guy. A guy whos ego is higher then Bob Marley ever was. Have to pick him.
