Recent previews and CVG have stated that LS is about 25%-30% of the landmass

But they only had a limited view of the map.

So when they said 1/8, they had a full view of the map?

They were probably estimating.

These could be two opinions of the same thing. The larger 1/4-1/3 is sort of accurate if Los Santos dominates the lower third of the map and the water around it is included. The 1/10-1/8 is more technical, excluding the map area to the east, west, and south of the actual limits of Los Santos.

I don't understand how excluding certain areas of the map would make LS proportionately smaller??

It doesn't change the size of Los Santos, but some people might look at the map and casually call the entire lower third of the map Los Santos even though that includes water and land that's technically outside the city limits, because there's maybe nothing else significant down there.

I've been looking for that screenshot. I was always wondering how it would compare with a draw distance on par with V. Doesn't look too far off from LS now.

The amount of detail still amazes the hell out of me even to this day. There is no other city in a video game that comes close to GTA IV's Liberty City. My opinion of course.

While I agree its the best city ever made, it has alot of short comings. There was nothing to do in the beautifl 3d model. Little or no interiors, nothing to spend your money on other than bowling and burgershot. Couldnt even access the roofs/fire escapes

Oh definitely, it's not without its faults for sure. Apart from how detailed and fantastic it looked, there just wasn't much to do. Hopefully GTA V fixes this with Los Santos.

Haha the way that I accessed fire escapes was to park a firetruck underneath, get on top, jump and hopefully land on the raised set of stairs. It was silly how you weren't able to actually grab onto them.

I think when they say "20-25-30 percent of the island", they do really mean 20-25-30 percent of the island..

Well we know Los Santos is approximately the size of Liberty City, and that the rest of the map is bigger than RDR+ San Andreas combined, so I'd put Los Santos between 1/4 and 1/6 of the map. Three is still a LOT of map that we haven't seen.

yep, but SA + RDR combined also includes also interior and underwater life.
Anyway, I think the map is big and I'm very excited. If LS is as big as LC (it seems so) and the surroundings are as big as RDR, I'm fine smile.gif

The commenter above me is right. Everyone is forgetting that the RDR + SA + IV statement is including interiors. I don't think it is including underwater life though, because SA + IV + RDR is smaller than 5 times RDR. 3.5 times RDR is around equal to a size statement made by IGN about V, 5 times IV. I calculated all these things a few pages back based on measurements by f4t4l1ty.

So Los Santos being as big as IV and being 20 percent of the map, because the map is 5 times IV, is my theory about the map size..
I hope Los Santos turns out bigger than IV though, and will be 25 percent of the map, but we'll see when the game comes out..

room to spare is very unclear. We have no idea how much that is. That can be a very small or big amount.

We also donít know wether they looked at RDR's, IV's and SA's interiors. The 3.5 times RDR and 5 times IV are the ones we should use, seeing they give the same estimation, and arenít unclear in what they mean.

The 'room to spare' may be quite large, but you can bet that it will be smaller than any other GTA map to date, as if the 'room to spare' was say the size of Vice City, they would have said 'GTAIV + RDR + SA + VC', as for the purposes of marketing, this sounds much bigger.

I don't think they would compare a map to anything pre San Andreas. They like to compare maps to other recent ones, and comparing something to 4 different maps at once is not very useful.

But yeah, I don't know how to interpret that R* comment at all, as it raises so many unanswerable questions like: were interiors in SA, RDR and IV counted too? How much room to spare? Does it include the water in San Andreas, IV and the V ocean floors? I have no sensible way of understanding it. Right now, I'm becoming more skeptical about getting any useful information from that sentence. Also because I have no idea what the surface of these interiors are.

3.5 times RDR combined with the Los Santos size estimations in this topic is the most clear to me, and it results in Los Santos being 20 percent of the map.

Edit for bakerach: I originally misread you saying Los Santos is between 1/4 and 1/6 of the map. I thought you used the RDR + SA comment to prove it was 1/8 or 1/9. But now I see you agree with the 1/5th estimate -_- So sorry for misreading..
