I believe that Rockstar intended this game to be a reminiscent of GTA III and left out a lot of improvements of the future games. They made a revamped Vice City in VCS but kept to the basics for LCS.

It really does suck how Toni can't swim. I've died so many times as a result. So much just wasted when Toni got wasted.

This could be the reason.

LIBERTY CITY (RS) - Thomas Stewart

A government body said the recent oil spill in Liberty City harbor "would cause no lasting damage to Liberty City inhabitants, as long as they don't swim, or drink tap water." The oil spill, which environmental agencies claim is a direct result of the deregulation of the Liberty City Harbor Authority and the closing of the pilot's office, has led to a black film enveloping the harbor and occasional flash fires on the surface. The government official noted "these flash fires are harmless unless you get burnt, and are very reminiscent of the Irish phenomenon of Will-o-the-Wisp. It is a great treat for all Liberty's inhabitants to see such an ancient tradition being played out in our harbor. The oil spill will pose no immediate threat to humans unless they like swimming in oil, while any animal stupid enough to live in that harbor got what it deserved. This spill is nowhere near as serious as the pollution leak of 1988, so I don't know why people are complaining."

They don't know how to implement swimming in VC engine back then maybe?

Who wants to swim in toxic water near Liberty City. It was Rockstar's first attempt to make their first PSP game, so it may miss few features, besides that swimming wouldn't have any use in Liberty City imo. But I kinda missed crouching, they could have included that at least, LCS was made in VC engine after all. monocle.gif

Come on, it's their in house engine. Wouldn't make too much effort for them. For modders yeah, but Rockstar has all the sources, it'd be pretty straightforward!

This. I still remembering running my Banshee off of the dock thinking that I could just get out and swim back to land.

It's bothersome, but when it comes to LC it looks better on a high building or on land.

It never bothered me, I suppose because before VCS, swimming was never really a feature (SA was the only game in the series at the time) and so i was not used to it

I wouldn't say that no swimming was a major problem. It got annoying at times, but it all works out. Swimming would have been a nice little addition, though.

I agree, Swimming does not bother me, however I did die once trying to get to the mission marker for Salvatore's mission (Caught in the Act)

As a matter of fact, this article well enough explains, why the water in GTA III is dark grey, as well as a decent explanation as to why everybody would drown upon entering the water... Never paid attention to this little detail, really...

On-topic: I really don't consider the absence of swimming a downside point of the game... Especially considering the fact that this was the first PSP game - it was a test, so Rockstar didn't risk implementing SA's features right in their first project...

And a subjective point: I've played too much of GTA III before GTA LCS to pay attention to this thing...

I'm not trying to defend no swimming, but I don't think I'd swim in that water.

Such an odd move to disable swimming and Crouching

This game should also have had far easier ways to have a helicopter.

They tried to make it like III a bit maybe

but if you accidently fell in that water, it would be so much better just being able to swim back instead of dying.

Yeah, it'd make it a bit better, but IMO, the game is just perfect the way it is without the ability to swim.

Reckless driving/walking/unique jump performance. And existence of GTA San Andreas to compare with - unlike GTA III and GTA Vice City - they came before the first game with the Swimming Feature.

After you've got the best, what's not better than the best, is the worst. I think you get the idea...

^ I understand with Unique Stunt Jump performances but for driving... the only water on the map is around the borders and so most drivers wouldn't really drive near it. I have never drove into water other than once trying to get to that Salvatore Mission haha tounge.gif

I also understand what you mean by them jumping in due to GTA SA. Oh well... I guess I just wasn't really thinking tounge.gif

Oh yeah? And how about the highway that connects Fort Stautnon and Torrington? It goes right above the water.
How about some places in Fort Staunton itself? They are adjacent to water as well.
And Shoreside Vale? Many roads are near water...

So there are many opportunities to fall down and sink... tounge2.gif

That is because III and VC came before SA, and LCS was after that.
But there are also "haterZ" who don't like III and VC because of not being able to swim (namely those who played SA first).

I think it makes sense because Liberty City is supposed to be the east coast around New York and I don't know who would actually swim in the water. It's cold, polluted and dangerous I've heard.

Besides, if you know the city well enough, it's not a problem.
