This game instead of returning to the 2D GTA era, seems to try and recreate a 3D era GTA but with a birdseye view. Rockstar where's the score system? Why isn't it top down? What happened to searching for weapons? What happened to the lives system? I know that having lives and having to look for weapons would probably be too much for todays gamers, but I mean COME ONE! Rockstar should make another 2D era like GTA. Complete with top down graphics, a score system, and also blending in features of 3D GTAs correctley, instead of trying to be a 3D one. Chinatown Wars tried to recreate a 3D GTA within the DS's "limitatons" (even though 3D is entireley possible on the DS, Rockstar just underestimated the system) which is why it was birds eye, which was why it had handholding gameplay elements like the auto aim you can't turn off, which was why it had a stupid storyline, and which was why the game failed.

I like CTW simply for how unique it is.

GTA CTW is the best top down game of all GTAs. It had good soundtrack and also more guns.

Well if Rockstar made another 2d GTA game it would be great for those nostalgic people, but i think it would fail commercially because many people wouldn't want to play 2d GTA. Also 2d compared to nowadays games wouldn't be very big success.

Well you can call it a 3D top down game.

Actually, the proper term for the view in CTW is 2.5D.

@ the topic starter, CTW is probably the best pure GTA I've ever played. And yes, I have played and achieved 100% on ALL GTA titles from 1 to IV including DLC.
So while your opinion may be valid I could not disagree with your summery more.

Well, what I personally liked about CTW was the features they had such as stealing vehicles and breaking the windshield if you have driven your car into the water.

I thought Chinatown Wars was good, I actually perferred it a little bit over the 3d gta's just for the "Retro-cool" feeling. I grew up playing GTA 1 and 2, and it feels great to see the series go back to the roots.

I do agree about the lack of a score, but it still feels more "Arcady" compared to the 3d games, and the touch screen QTE's felt nice.

I'd love to see a 3d GTA but with the QTE's of Chinatown Wars.

No its not, isometric perspective has no vanishing points so things that are far away are the same size as things close up, In CTW you can clearly see that things in the distance are smaller so it has regular 3d perspective. And top down just has to do with the camera looking down which CTW has (albeit in an angle).

Rockstar did a good job, I hope OP is trolling.

Although i hated this game with a passion, it was much better then GTA 1 and 2 in my opinion.
Personally, im not sure how GTA even got past GTA1. People liked it sure, but imo it was a terribly boring game with no point in playing it.

Yes, it's a fantastic game. Just below the two "Stories" games in my opinion, but still a great game!
I REALLY want a new GRAND THEFT AUTO game for the Vita, I really, really do. I still play the two "Stories" games FFS! I love GRAND THEFT AUTO!

No. Just No. Chinatown Wars is better than GTA 1,2 and Advance in my opinion. It opened up many possibilities and features not available in Advance (I say advance because 1 and 2 were before GTA III and no GTA had features like that back then) Think of the minigames, Molotov's and Ammunation Online. That is something new.

Chinatown Wars is the best Top-Down view game. It's not even completely Top-Down like GTA 1/GTA 2 were.

This game isn't meant to imitate the old GTA, it's meant to recreate it. If you love the old Grand Theft Auto's, then play them. The only reason CTW doesn't have GTA 1 and 2 graphics is because it's updated with new technology. Not all GTA fans played the first GTA's. It's like R* making GTA V look like GTA III, it's not groundbreaking. It would be nice, but R* has better technology now. They wouldn't make it just for the old school GTA fans, they want to reinvent the image.

I am fond of the perspective in Chinatown Wars. It almost seems like a cross between the top-down view and the third-person view. If you want the 2D Era back, go ahead and play one of those games.

Furthest thing from a disgrace. It's a great step forward and I can't see how it's inferior in anyway to the 2D games. I played the top-down games when I was younger when they first came out and I thought they were complete rubbish. Chinatown Wars is such a huge step forward and you're just refusing to get out of that manipulative nostalgic mindset.

Hate me for bashing the 2D GTA's, but I don't mind. They were almost unplayable and headache causers. ph34r.gif ph34r.gif

It's great on the iPad. Uses the best stuff from all platforms, cell shaded HD with all the touch mini games. I highly suggest it!

The controls were a lot better than the PSP games (Vice City Stories plays very well on the PS2, though).

I'd like a sequel for the 3DS.

For me it is a happy hybrid of GTA 1, GTA 2, GTA III and GTA IV. Blends everything together nicely, but is its own thing at the same time. To me this is the third best GTA. I like this more than the Stories games or even GTA IV or Vice City.

imo: III > SA > CW > VC > LCS > 2 > IV > VCS > 1

Sorry for the double post but I think I know you and we are facebook friends. Is your name Brian? (that avatar is similar to your FB pic) Red Door bar ring any bells? Lol You would remember that we found out we went to the same Kindergarten school, one year apart.

Also I would like to see a sequel. I haven't heard anything about Leeds' next project. I would finally buy a 3DS if that happened (I already really want a 3DS for Mario Kart 7, among others)

Grand Theft Auto 1-2 are classic, for what they are and the doors they opened, but they would have been something really great for their day if they were more like Chinatown Wars, save the incessant and unnecessary cursing and adolescent humor, though.

I will never understand why people complain about this game. I played t for months, and found it to be one of the best of the series. It's made for a handheld system, and it goes beyond it's length in making it worth while. Personally, I liked it more than IV.
