Diesels need to be in their powerband just as much as gas engines.

Plus said powerband is much smaller.

Not only that but there are VERY few diesel platforms that are well suited to make big power or turn. If you're talking about race cars(like the Audi TDIs) that's a very extreme exception. Diesels rely more on the "feeling" of acceleration more than actually accelerating.

They also sound like arse.

No exceptions.

Fastest I've reached in my little 1.6 hatchback is 121 on the M25, during rush hour. It was very engaging for a minute or so, and I settled back to avoid prosecution rather than an accident. I was surprised how controllable it felt.

Oh, if we're exposing our genitalia, I've done 150mph on public roads in a car, north of 160 and probably approaching 170 on public roads on a motorbike (neither in the UK I might add), and around 180 down the famous straight at Bruntingthorpe.

What were you driving when you hit 180? That's an insane speed but on a track it feels much safer than 150 on a highway.

I'm guessing a motorbike.

Noble M400. Though that was "on the clock", rather than GPS, so in reality it was probably lower.

You lucky lucky man, Sivis. I have never seen a Noble M400 in person but I loved that car when I was a teen.

Drove my friends turbo miata the other day to its current top speed of 110. Fuel cut/rev limiter on megasquirt turned down retardly low to 5500, 205/40R16 tires, .814 OD, 4.10 rear end. Math adds up there.

It hit 110 in no time. With the rev limiter reset to 7k, I still think it would be very capable of hitting its 140 mph top speed pretty fast.

Hit 103 in the Burb on the way home from picking up my caddy clip without even realizing it at the time. (speedo is calibrated for 245/75R16s)

Let off because there was another wave of oncoming cars coming around the bend and State troopers just love the highways around here, but I certainly didn't feel unsafe. The Burb rides smooth as butter past 80mph.

The end point to my automotive aspirations is a saloon with a comfortable limit of 200.

Guess I should move to Bavaria.

Tuned diesels don't count jelly. Stock diesels sound like arse.

No exceptions.

Well the 1, 2, and 3 cylinder detroits generally sound like a weedwacker. 4's are so so. 6's, 8's, and 12's scream like a raped ape though. Shifty41s_beerhatsmilie2.gif

Also, absolutely love that truck. 5 speed main, 3 speed aux, and 2 speed rear end. 30 possible gear combos. Takes a real man to drive that. wink.gif
