**this does not include the multiplayer and co-op maps.

I'm actually being a bit generous to San Andreas in this comparison. All those road looking things in the FC3 map are actually rivers. pretty wide too. You have to zoom-in in game to see the roads.

http://www.flickr.co...in/photostream/

also, the island on the left of FC3's map looks eerily similar to San Andreas. Even similar in size. Could this have been intentional by the devs?

I'll have to do a rough measurement of Far Cry 3's map. The map in that game is big enough for a sandbox game, but not it's HUGE like the maps of Just Cause 2 or True Crime: Streets of L.A. (not even close).

Gta iv map > Far cry 3 map.

Yeah that's right i'm saying something positive about gta smile.gif Seriously though people cry and bitch about IV being the same. Well i played far cry 3 and i sh*t you not they copy and paste land.

I talking about a big section of land btw. It gave me even more respect for iv's map which is hard considering how highly i think of it. I'm not saying far cry 3's map's bad either it works perfectly for that style of game.

I just think gta iv smashes it out of that park. V's map will be top notch that's one thing i have no doubt about whatsoever. Rockstar makes the best worlds.

Im talking about size. Gta 4's map is not as big as san andreas's map. So what do you mean? you mean quality of the map? In that case hell yea gta 4 is better than FC3. But still Fc3 has a ton of caves temples secerets detail and fun sh*t to do.

@romanbellicsbrain i did a measurement of FC3's map with the in game meter system. It came out to a ridiculous 16,000 KMsqrd. I double checked and its a bit of a rough estimate confused.gif

I guess i would too but realistically after exploring it thouroughly i expect it to be a bit bigger. At least traveling around it will be slower, moving in FC3 after certain upgrades makes u run way too fast.

@ WillRock.

Yeah i meant in quality. The size of the map doesn't bother me. I would rather a small map with alot of detail.

Haha well Far Cry 3's map quality was pretty good. Kinda repeitive jungle but some nice areas. All it really needs is a true survival mode and it would rival GTA for me.

I don't think so. If you look at the map It doesn't look that big, but It only looks small because there's no cities, anyone who played the game knows that the map is really huge.

you see the kilometers and it looks like after comparing that GTA IV map was a bit smaller.
80% Far Cry= GTA IV
So that means that GTA SA was bigger than Far Cry.
And GTA V will be bigger 3-4 times bigger than Far Cry.

The kilometer scale doesn't mean a thing, It's a different game. I'm pretty sure it would take much longer to drive throught the whole map with car in FC3 than in GTAIV.

Aaron Garbut claimed that GTA V's map will be bigger than GTA San Andreas, GTA IV and Red Dead Redemption combined. GTA SA's map is about 13.9 square miles big and GTA IV's map is about 6.25 square miles big. The map of Red Dead Redemption has an overall size of 11-12 square miles but since only 60% of the map are the exploreable area, the map is about 6-7 square miles big.

It does mean a thing. It's for example not fair to let run the protagonists of each game for a certain ammount of time and then calculate the size of the map because in real life, no human being runs exactly as fast as another human being so the same goes for games. But what is a fair and accurate comparison is if you try to calculate the mapsize if you go for example in all games, each one kilometer and then look at the ingame measurements if you indeed went by one kilometer. Then put the maps of each game together and scale the maps in a way that the one-kilometer-line has the exact same ammount of pixels on each map. You should get a fair comparison if you do it properly. It is more simple if you compare games from the same videogame developer, that's right. Rockstar Games for example scales all maps of their games since at least GTA San Andreas in one squaremeter per pixel. The map of GTA SA has a resolution of 6000x6000, the map of GTA IV has a resolution of 6000x3800 and the map of RDR has a resolution of 7500x5500. I have scaled down all these maps to put them together in one picture but in a way that it's still in the same scale as before. The result is this and should give you an idea of how big GTA V will be.

If IV alone compares to FC3's map, why are we even arguing? Of course GTA V's map will be bigger, it's RDR, SA, and IV combined, which is massive. Plus, unlike FC3, none of the land is copy and paste which should make for a more interesting world.

FC3 is map is actually pretty detailed, yes there is some copy and pasting but do you really expect Ubi to make every square inch of jungle different? That's just not how it works. There will be copy and pasting in some of V's wilderness, mark my words. Besides FC3 has tons of unique temples, caves and mines dotted around the map. It's not like JC2.

Hmm, I will maybe make a map comparison with more ingame maps now! I already have GTA San Andreas, GTA IV and Red Dead redemption correctly scaled. I will try to add L.A. Noire and Far Cry 2 since there are official statements where the sizes of each map was mentioned!

Lol your calculations are wayyyyyy off. That would make the map about 16 times the size of Just Cause 2.

Looking at numbers thrown around for the Far Cry series, and I don't know how official they are, apparently Far Cry 2 was 50 square km and Far Cry 3 was said to be 10x bigger, so 500 square km, which would be over 8x GTASA if it was literally true.

Interestingly the map editor, which can't edit the "real" map, is limited to a quarter square km creation.

Thats what I was thinking! But its just how small meters are measured in the game haha. I measured it with bullet holes and the character runs like 8 meters in half a second

Anyways.... back to what I intended this topic for.

Using that rough comparison is it fair to say GTAV and FC3 are around the same size?

I have put the maps of L.A. Noire, Red Dead Redemption, GTA San Andreas, GTA IV and Far Cry 2 on the map of Just Cause 2 but of course it's scaled correctly as always. Sorry in advance if the official map of FC2 does look different but the size is still correctly scaled.

I know that we're talking about Far Cry 3 but I nevertheless have taken the map of Far Cry 2. Just to have a mathematically comparison between each map I have listed:
• Just Cause 2: 400 square miles
• Far Cry 2: 19.3 square miles
• GTA San Andreas: 13.9 square miles
• Red Dead Redemption: 11-12 square miles (or 6-7 square miles if we only consider the exploreable area)
• GTA IV: 6.25 square miles
• L.A. Noire: 8 square miles

Far Cry 3 is allegedly ten times bigger than Far Cry 2 which means the map would be around 190 square miles big, or 200 square miles if you want it rather gross which would be half as big as Just Cause 2.

The map of FC3 seems a bit too small. Maybe not even a bit, I mean really too small.
