GTASA
MAP SECTION: countryw

I'm using MEd to edit countryw.ipl and thought I'd write down some notes
for whomever.

I just deleted most of the vegetation (including the LOD versions) from the
map and was able to run it successfully. Still, I ran into a few problems mostly
regarding buildings....

--EDITING NOTES: PROBLEMS--
01. Main.scm Problems
I noticed on my first attempt at using MEd that once a building is deleted, not
all elements are removed from the game. This is PROBABLY due to main.scm
placing items there. For instance, in the SW corner of countryw.ipl, there's
a windmill near a house that is not present in MEd. In addition, once the main
house is deleted, a floating door appears still appears in the game (probably
an enterable door or something from main.scm).

02. CRASH warnings
Also on my first attempt, I deleted some buildings that I know are used in the
game script (Truth's and Combine Harvesters). After deleteing, I tried to run
the game and it crashed.
My first thought was that it was the binary ipls in gta3.img. However, after
deleting gta3.img (and it's shadow copy), I copied the stock gta3.img and
the game still crashed. So, I deleted regular & shadow copy of countryw.ipl
and replaced it with stock, and the game worked again. (I'm on Windows
Vista so I have to delete the shadow copies)

--EDITING NOTES: FUNNY STUFF--
01. Floating Bushes
Anyone notice the bushes floating in the "sky" above the map? Probably from
the Rockstar map editor guy using them to copy/paste (I guess they don't
have configurable palletes on their software). Don't seem to be present
in the game (but I'm not sure as I get 5 level warrants when I'm in that
region and get shot down).

Well, that's about it. Deleting all the trees from countryw.ipl was fun and I'm
pretty sure I can get away with deleting several buildings, but I'm still far
away from figuring out how to flatten the area and add city streets.

Plan on editing some more of the map sections in this way, I'll keep yall
posted on anything I find....

MAP EDIT SCENE: countrye

Just got done deleting most of the trees from countrye using MEd and I can honestly
say it looks a lot better (more like SoCal). I'm noticing that (like countryw), if you
delete all the trees in MEd, trees still show up (along with grass) in the game, but
at least they are "normal" sized trees. I'll have to figure out how those are being
loaded if I'm gonna flatten the area into an industrial area tho.

--FUNNY STUFF--
01. Not much in the way of goofs here, unless you count the ginormous "oak" trees
everywhere. I guess the devels liked these for some reason, but I don't think I've
ever seen oak trees that large.

--COMMENTARY--
01. DEFENDING THE REDWOOD TREES
You know, I really get what the devels were thinking when they put all those giant
redwoods. Ya know, San Fiero is like San Francisco, there's a bunch of redwoods
around San Francisco.
Why so close? Look at the clock. It takes a lot of time to drive there. That would
be like driving to San Francisco from SoCal.
Still, if you want to go by the clock, it takes CJ 5 seconds to walk across his kitchen.
So that's 5 minutes gametime. Sooo, that makes his kitchen 528 yards! Ouchy....

Also, where's the tribute to Monteray Jazz Festival in the game? I've been to Monteray
AND Big Sur via bus and backpacking AND lived to tell the tale...

MAP EDIT: countrys, LAhills, LAe2
PROG: MEd

Countrys went well, all redwoods and tall pines were deleted and no crashes. Looks much
more SOCAL coastal now.

LAhills was actually done pretty good by default. Still, those giant oaks had to go....

LAe2...that's a tough one but I clear cutted it and it looks more like a "ghetto" now, although
that's probably not enough houses to be a ghetto, more like a tough neighborhood. Also
managed to replace some tall palm trees for smaller ones (#645, 716, 718).

Here's some suggestions for tree editing LAe2:
01. Delete any tree coming out of concrete.
02. Delete any tree coming out of a yard that is on top of a parking garage.
03. In ghetto areas, delete all trees except for those that the city would have
planted (such as near the highway, around the convention center, near the public transportation
train, down by the beach, etc). Remember that palm trees are expensive!
04. Always try to add some "lean" to your trees. Trees that go straight up from the ground are
just soooo unnatural.
05. Move trees up and down to create trees of various heights. Hey, that's way more realistic!
06. Watch out for trees that things are connected to (like power lines running into them or
clothes lines), you don't want a power line just floating in the air as if by magic....
07. Deleting bushes in these areas is pretty tough as they are often multi-models that sometimes
include cool things like chain links fences. I didn't delete any, tho their 1Dness IS pretty
annoying.

That's about it. Great program. Two thumbs up..... moto_whistle.gif

windmill is ipl, it's an animated object and won't be shown in MEd
