Thought I'd come back and post Serenade To a Cuckoo., it's needs to be shared! smile.gif ..

I must admit that I'm not really into jazz all that much. I can appreciate it, but it just doesn't keep me "with" it, if you will. But this track, holy bitchtits! Absolutely brilliant and perhaps, albeit slightly cliche in the world of jazz, stunningly smooth. I love how it keeps the momentum going, ebbing and flowing so effortlessly and carefree, all the while elevating to a level of class that necessitates a sharp suit, a silky cigar, and a strong bourbon.

Thanks for introducing me to that, man.

Does anyone know what jazz song this song samples?

Don't have a slight idea, you sure it isn't an original track used for the song?
Maybe someone else here knows confused.gif

I'm completely in love with this george benson quartet live recording:

Wild, chaotic piano soloing, but in an organized way; absolutely INSANE! Unfortunately, I've yet to find out who plays piano on the recording.

And check out this sh*t: Yellowjackets with rob ford, rus ferrante, rick lawson, jim haslip. This one is more organized, and carries a hint of polyrythmics(Guitar in 6/8s), but the theme is just a pentatone scale really. If you are skeptic upon hearing, skip past the drumless intro.

And lastly, Jimmy Rosenberg. Great gypsy jazz guitarist. Check this live vid out, music starts at exactly one minute. He switches guitar after half a minute because the string breaks. cool sh*t

One for the big band aficionados - I've been on a binge with this one for the best part of a week...

Or, for a contrast, this - one of those "I cant believe this ain't a studio session!" live recordings. Can't go wrong wit a Cedar tune, and Bob Berg just sounds mental on it:

That last one there, my favourite kind of sound and style. It paints the picture of a smokey, dark and brown jazz lounge. Cool stuff

Anyone remember Sting's 9/11 concert?

Christian McBride doing some amazing work on  the upright, Chris Botti absolutely killin' the trumpet. Great piece from an amazing concert, especially considering the circumstances. Definitely recommend listening to more from this concert.

I'd look around for fusion artists. It sounds like a rhodes electric piano, and e-bass + guitar. Maybe Hancock or Corea?

Sorry I couldn't be more helpful :(

I'm really into latin jazz atm:

and also some more traditional stuff, like Wes' "Road song", which I'll be playing for an entrance exam.

Thanks for your response Marvin. Nice tracks you posted too.

I've still have that horrible nagging feeling on needing to find the name of the track. :(

Found it! Thanks Shazam :p

It's actually in GTA IV... that's where I must have heard it!

What would modern jazz be without Miles?

Mr. Pink, if you're a musician, your track just begs for dorian stuff.

e:

Jazz is much broader than people like to think. I really love this tune, especially the awesome guitar beginning at 45 seconds:

Who's up for a bit of Indian-infused late-'60s funkiness?

Comes complete with de-tuned clarinets/soprano saxes - I've been driving my friends/family/neighbours nuts with this recently...

(fun fact: it's really, really hard to play with micro-tonal tuning like that, particularly if you've got perfect pitch. Played it in a concert of Don Ellis music once, and it was TORTURE - not to mention that you've really got to sell it completely. Chicken out on the delivery, and it doesn't sound like a deliberate effect - it just sounds like the band can't play in tune...)

^Didn't know you played, mate! Awesome!
Here's a traditional-sounding one, with only a few touches of modernism, from my favourite show:

Awesome chord work, and the intro sounds a lot like The Beatles' Michelle.

Heh - yeah, I've got my own group, and I do a fair bit of freelancing with other bands, plus the occasional bit of session/studio work.

Tend mostly to do stuff like this (in fact, this is one of my band's regular numbers!):

(not us, obviously! Awesome bit of '80s Jazz Messengers, with a young Wynton Marsalis, plus the late James Williams on piano)

Mingus was one of a kind. Word has it that he once pulled out a piano string in anger.

Fun fact, at my shcool we have a Steinway grand which was used by the Mingus crew at a concert.
