Beta Radar?

I was peeking through the GTA IV texture files and found this:

At the bottom left, there appears to be a square radar. Probably not much, but I found it interesting.

It was probably rectangular to match the look of a GPS or phone, but they must have decided to go with the classic round-radar. Pretty cool find nonetheless.

Should be used in a Korean restaurant, probably as a painting. I found a clearer picture of it earlier, but now I can't find it again.

It does remind me of a smartphone GPS, and as it was said that's most likely what they intended it to be until they probably decided to make the phone and the radar two separate things (and include health and armor around the radar instead of somewhere else on the screen, the change likely came along when they decided to not clutter up the screen with so many HUD icons). I believe there's also some beta map icons in the files as well. I remember looking at an icon one of the GTA wikis for a boat (perhaps for the ferries) that I never saw in the game before, and I can't seem to find this icon anywhere on the web now.

The icon is called boat tour. I think they had large ferries that delivered the tour.

Would make sense. In trailer 1 there was a ferry seen at the terminal shot. I imagine it was cut because of problems with the Euphoria engine.

I know that it doesn't have much to do with this topic,but I noticed that on the map included with GTA IV there is a picture of Meadows Park.In the picture,the park is very different looking that in game (similar to the picture of Middle Park above).There are no trees,benches,or peds.Kinda interesting I guess...

Heh, I've had that map hanging on my wall for 4 years now and never noticed that. I suppose that screenshot and the image Cody found of Middle Park must have been taken before trees were implemented into the build they were at.

I think it's all really interesting to see what stuff you can find if you look long enough through the coding and files of the game, keep it up icon14.gif I'd do it myself if I had the PC versions, and a hand at modding, and a PC capable of running the game!

Not sure. Another strange thing is that there are a few textures that have the mouse cursor in them. My guess is they didn't think anybody would notice.

I doubt the radar ever had anything to do with the phone because in real life phones with GPS and maps were just starting to come out while the game was being finished. GTA IV is already pretty dated in the sense of depicting a pre-smartphone world.

Holy sh*t that's some cool stuff. Never read about this stuff on the wiki.

I wonder if that zombie icon was really going to be used for a zombie mode. I wonder what the 911 icons were going to be used for. Wow!

Yeah, I've seen him around near the apartments in Algonquin. He is also featured in a mission where you have to get information out of him about some guy on one of the apartment levels.

At least. Needless to say, it's a very early build, and probably the reason we never saw Middle Park up close until later. Note the two untextured dumpsters/electrical boxes.

In which file are these pictures? I wonder why they put in-game pictures in the game itself tounge.gif But yeah that really looks like from the time of the first screenshots or earlier, the ugly blur effect had lots of strenght like in the first screenshots and yes I see the lack of textures. Definitely interesting.
I've also noticed that the development of the game started somewhere around mid to late 2006, the earliest file (or one of them) is dated as September 2006 (creation date in Excel), it's action_table.xls in common/data.

Mainly from /data/maps/interiors/. This page gives a good understanding to where everything is at.

Well yeah I've been sweeping the files in OpenIV but didn't really find anything interesting, some in-game pictures too but nothing impressive and thanks I knew I had seen him before I guess.
