To help you visualise the possible style of desert we'll get in V, here are some images.

The challenge for Rockstar is not so much how to design the terrain and what's in it, but rather how to make it come alive, not just be there for the sake of it, and how it can be a part of the game rather than just a part of the map.

''I've been through the desert on a horse with no name''...
I f*cking want that song in the game! GIEF!

So do I. I know it won't happen as they've never reused songs but that doesnít stop me from hoping.

I like that RDR hat Easter egg someone came up with, be cool if we could get the hat too when we find it.

I also agree with the long solitary road thing, and hitch hikers would be awesome. Also a reference to fallout New Vegas would be cool, see some people dressed in what looks like NCR trooper uniforms carrying M4's go up to them and one of them will be like "Mo'Jave Mo'problems," of course just change the Mojave part to what ever the name of the desert would be in game. Hitchhikers could make for some good random encounters, like in RDR, maybe make one or two of them be serial killers who try to kill you while driveing them to the nearest town.

The above poster's pictures pretty much have what I want in a desert, I mean they hit the nail on the head with RDR, I'm sure that they can make it happen for V.

I hope the desert looks more natural than it did in San Andreas. They perfected it in RDR.

i'd like to see:
a cave in the dessert like what the raced through in fast and furious
a deserted air strip where people drag race(like in the first fast and the furious movie)
explorable caves maybe
a huge highway
small towns, maybe some creepy some not.
small shacks/stores along the way. or gas stations
maybe a biker bar( like in wild hogs )
a lot of offroad vehicles and access to them.
hopefully a safehouse you could visit in the middle of the dessert
definitely people partying in the desert every once in a while
animals, possible sandstorms
a bunch of dunes for doing stunts(like an offroad skatepark)
maybe some hideouts for the mafia or something
the breaking bad reference
maybe a pyramid as a easter egg
maybe a terrorist hideout in caves with rpgs, ak-47s, etc.
straight roads and curvier roads for the scenic route
: thats all i got right now

love the idea of hitch hiking through the deserts, they could be holding up signs with humorous words on..similar to the tramp we saw in the trailer!

something that could add a bit of fun to that would be to have some hitch hiker riding in the back of your car when you hear a local news report on the radio describing someone similar to the hiker who is wanted for murder in the area...then he could all of a sudden turn on you and try to rob you and your car...just a little idea that could add more entertainment in the game!

possibly having a broken down mini bus with a group of cheerleaders on the side of the road shaking their pom poms at you for a lift could be a bit of fun too! biggrin.gif however I think this is more of the 'I wish' topic wink.gif

The desert was a pretty cool part of the map in San Andreas. I really hope they make it really feel natural with temperatures scorching and the sand just blowing around. If animals are implemented I want to see a coyote, rattlesnake or a desert toad. What I hope will be in the desert are some interstate highways with large gas stations or rest areas and two lane roads with some old road signs to other towns, maybe a stranded car or two parked along the side. I know this is weird but does anyone remember Hunter Quarry from San Andreas? I know that you can find a quarry or a mining operation in the desert in real life. I hope the quarry will have some special equipment such as some dump trucks, bulldozers, excavators, draglines, etc. There can be a rail line running through the desert with a parody of Amtrak for passengers or a parody of BNSF or Union Pacific with long freight trains, and it would be great for me to see a parody of the Tehachapi Loop seeing as it is located not too far north of Los Angeles.

Personally I'd like to see in the Desert, the occasional towns, desolate highways the go on for miles, maybe some desert hideout safe house.

Also more about the Desolateness, I felt in SA, there where at times, far too many people driving on the backloads and highways in the desert, now I'm not saying make it so you're the only soul for miles upon miles, but make it so there's less traffic out there.

Yeah, there are a too many people driving around. The hideout thing is good, but the houses were good for the price.

GTA SA's desert was pretty nice. Not much needed to improve. Of course the graphics will be updated.

More spread out area, like RDR. Which of course will make the map seem larger.

i Think it'd be dope if when you drove in the desert sand, there would be a nice sand cloud behind you, and your tire marks effect how you drive over them. Like if you drive over the same patch a couple of times theres a track left. Swerving off would make the ride a little bumpier, etc.

Topography
- Some desert-plants, cacti and other
- Atleast one interstate/freeway/paved road to passing through, like seen in several movies.
- Canyons, heightdifferences, sanddunes in specific areas.
- Tumbleweed/Hayballs rolling around with wind.
- Windier than in suburbs/midtown/downtown , as desert is plain.
- Animals, deers, racoons etc.

People
- Hillybillys/rednecks
- Not very populated, a bit isolated from surronding regions
- "Wierd" people, gun-crazys, moonshine brewers etc.
- Hitchikers on the road, as random characters

Mystical
- Chupacabra† biggrin.gif
- Shady people with hoods and sunglasses.
- anything related to urban legends,
- Atari videogame burial (E.T)† sly.gif

hitchikers is actually a good idea, one more way to get $$$. That would replace taxi missions cool.gif

Yea the hitchhiker idea does sound cool.Like if they make it into a random stranger missions but the hitchhiker robs your car instead when you try and pick them up.Or they actually need a ride into town and they pay you.

There could be abandoned buildings (gas stations) with super rare cars in (BF Injection anyone?) and plenty of trails. A canyon or something would be cool, with jumps over it and rocky trails going to the bottom.

A desert hideout could work too, and maybe some secret areas (an abandoned mine? biggrin.gif) with easter eggs in.

Okay, here we go...

- A small gathering of alien afficianados in the desert. Gathered around a makeshift trailer park, they have tables where they sell various UFO paraphernalia. Nothing else to see, just weirdos who believe in that kind of stuff.

- John Martson's hat hanging on a tree. Just a cool Easter Egg.

-  A 'mass grave'. If you look close enough in the mound of sand, you'll see copies of GTA III sticking out. This would be a little riff on the myth about the ET game on the Atari.

Weirdo's? You call Airforce generals, fighter pilots, ex-Nasa employees, police officers, presidents, high up Navy officials, scientists,-- weirdo's? wow. There is much evidence that UFO's are very real and have been here longer than we have. There are drawings, etched in stone in Egypt, Peru and the South American pyramids of flying machines from thousands of years ago. I've been there and seen the evidence with my own eyes.

Anyways, the desert in San An was cool for the time, but now, we need some serious detail and after seeing RDR, I think R* will do good in that area. I would like to be driving out in the desert at night and all of a sudden get terrorized by a old 50's black Chevy. It rams you in the rear-end, then tries to ram you off the road. Things like that would be cool and really be an unforgettable WTF? moment.

Even an area the size of one side of RDR's map i.e the bottom half to make up the desert which gradually progresses to the countryside. Same kind of texture and terrain would be good

I'd love to see some big ass snakes that'll f-ing kill yo ass if they bite. Imagine you're doing an Area 51-type mission and you're 10 seconds away from completing the mission and suddenly a giant mutated f-ing snake comes out of nowhere and kill yo ass. That'd be awesome

Somebody's been watching a little too much history channel.

I wouldn't suggest too many changes other than an obvious graphics update and to make it more vast and abandoned. I also like the ideas of adding in animals and random encounters. Like everybody's saying, I expect a lot of elements from RDR to be in the game.

I'm also still holding out hope for Las Venturas, although I wouldn't bank on it being in there.

Watch some crime movies/shows like Breaking Bad, Casino etc. and you can see some perfect examples biggrin.gif

Burying bodies, meetings for dirty work, cooking meth in a f*ckin' van, punishing people by throwing them into middle of desert etc. California is an awesome setting for GTA, can't wait.

This has been bothering me for a while, but where exactly was it confirmed that V will contain desert? Beaches aren't desert.

Also, I didn't think Sou Cal had much desert, just Nevada/Arizona/New Mexico/Texas.

Well in the trailer, you can see at 0:51 I think it is, a very strong resemblance to what a desert would look like. So it's only natural to presume that the desert is in, otherwise this would've been locked loooooong ago.

a big terrain, great heathaze-shaders and really hot weather, clear blue sky, in the evening an orange sunset etc.
Terrain should be high poly, the extreme low poly terrain in San Andreas destroys everything
you should feel very lost if youre alone in the desert without a vehicle
