You should stop this pointless fixation with killing sprees, the protagonist can do that anytime he wants, it does not have to be written into the story.
I think a better way to explain your idea, is to have a cold, ruthless, murderous, but cunning and smart character, one whose always seems to find an understandable reason to justify his very bad actions. Someone can be heartless and impulsively kill in an instant simply because the a situation requires him to, not just out of sheer delight. Something like a mix of Stringer Bell from The Wire, Michael Corleone from The Godfather 2, Tony Soprano of the Sopranos and Alonzo from Training Day, or even Vic Mackie from The Shield.
That's what I want. You hit the nail on the head.
