the Reds need to get past St. Louis' massive bank account to stay competitive.

excuses, excuses.

money doesn't win baseball games.

the Reds should quit bellyaching and start playing better during the month of September..

I never said that it was an excuse, just that St. Louis is a larger market team and therefore has more purchasing power than the Reds, and that might not win baseball games, but it sure as hell helps.

I called it at the beginning of the year. The Yankess are not going to the playoffs. It won't surprise me if they finished 4th or 5th in the AL East either. Way too many distractions. Lost Cano. Lost Grandyman. Lost A-Rod. Lost Mariano. Teixeira doesn't seem to be even half the player he used to be. Jeter is declining rapidly and is nowhere near the top of the rung anymore. Sabathia is hurt. The only players left on their roster who can still produce at an elite Yankee standards level are Beltran, Ellsbury, And McCann.

I think it goes without saying that this Yankees team is an absolute shell of and is nowhere near the 09 world series team. I think the Yanks are just headed to the same state they were in during the late 80s and early 90s before the revitalization. I will have to look at the upcoming free agent pools later and see if another spending spree is in the air in the next few years that could revitalize the team.

I know Rocky, Im just saying that You could play with minor scuffs on the ball, You dont have to throw all those balls in the stands.

Yea, I know that :p

Though, I'm sure it has to do with safety; scuffs on a ball might cause problems for pitchers gripping it or something.

Yankee are Stankee, that's what. Blowing it the last year for Jeter, good job.

Hope we get the win tonight, though we have a pitcher making his debut...

Tanaka pitched amazingly last night anyway, that's what counts.... right?... right?

Josh Beckett just got a no-hitter against the Phillies, was watching the whole game through, pretty amazing performance.

Manny is back as a player/coach for the Iowa Cubs who play in AAA I believe. Should be interesting to see if he actually plays.

And congrats to Beckett on the No-No. I wonder if there will be a perfect game this year.

Still 2 games to go man. But the series started off good for the A's at least.

As a Giants fan, I am hoping for another Bay Bridge Series. But this time, no Earthquake so they don't have to play every game in Oakland. :p

Had a feeling the Rockies hot start wasn't gonna last, lost 6 in a row; after this game finishes and they're like 6-17 the last month or so.

That 3 run wild-pitch puts the exclamation point on how the Rockies have been playing. 12-23 in their last 35 games

MLB debuts brand new pitching cap that should prevent serious injury should a line-drive ever find its way back to your forehead.

Alex Torres became the first player to wear one during an official game last night and it caused a lot of discussion on TV.

Good idea, poor (aesthetic) execution. This was my first thought upon seeing that hat:

Looks like a Super Mario hat. lol

Why don't they just give them the same helmet batters use? Except with both ears covered, problem solved.

because they would fall off way too much. those helmets aren't the kind of padded like the ones Little leaguers where. there are pads in them but, its minimal.

Just think, Hitters get hit in the head with a 98 MPH pitch and they have a bad concussion. well off the bat when its coming at 110+, its still going to do a sh*t load of damage.

Plus it would mess up arm angles and it would probably cause vision problems. Especially with trying to look at the runners on base.

I'm sick of people talking about how it looks, and saying it's a bad idea based on that.  You people are idiots, and I would love to see you hit in the head with a 110 mph ball coming off a bat.

It's designed for safety, and presumably comfort.  They're not going to be selling these at your local "Lidz" store, so you can crook it and keep the stickers on it to impress your friends.  It's a piece of equipment, not clothing, and if it saves the career and/or life of one pitcher, then they should gladly look like mario.

Yes, because I said it was an awful idea and the pitchers should not be wearing any sort of cap or protective headgear. In fact, the batters should be using metal bats so those balls come back up the middle even faster! /sarcasm

I laughed at its appearance on my first sighting of it and mentioned that it's a good idea for pitchers to wear protective headgear. I'm not completely against making the game safer. Just like I had no real qualms with the rule against catchers blocking the plate in order to preserve their safety. I've been to games where pitchers have been hit in the head -- both minor league and major league. And for the last year and a half, I lived directly across the street from Tropicana Field (sh*t stadium as it may be) where Alex Cobb was hit in the head (one year ago last week) and three blocks away from the hospital he was taken to. I understand the risks. I understand the intent of the equipment. I don't need to get hit in the head with a 110 mph ball screaming back up the middle, as you so anxiously wish to see (I actually wear glasses because as a kid I was hit in the face with a baseball that came back up the middle). Nor do I need a lecture or a condescending post regarding buying the hat at Lids.

Do I think pitchers will benefit from wearing protective headgear? Yes, no doubt about it. Is this good for baseball? Needless to say, yes, it is. Do I think this exact cap is the answer? Probably not, as it appears to be a trial run. I imagine they will improve upon its safety features, comfort for the players, et cetera given more time.

Dude, I wasn't even talking about you. Or anyone in this topic for that matter. I agree it looks like a Mario hat, and I've also been hearing/reading it all day from people saying they shouldn't wear them because of that.

Fair enough. My mistake. I misunderstood who you were speaking about in your post.

I hadn't even seen the hat before El_Diablo posted it. I had heard they were developing one, but didn't know they'd made one before I saw that video. I had had the same thought GTA3Rockstar had a while ago, but I'm not sure that would do much good, like ILAK said. However, I just thought, maybe they could develop something similar to the helmets issued to the military. The biggest issue there might be cost and possibly weight, though. The Kevlar helmets they wear weigh about 3 or so pounds. I don't know exact costs of the helmets, but I've seen figures around $250. Those things might be speed bumps in using those helmets as models.

Well I'm done with the Rockies, they'll never be good. Tulowitzki will leave after this year I bet, I'm surprised he's even be here this long.

I finally think Trout's going to get the MVP this year that he's deserved the last couple years. He's the clear MVP of the first half.

So, Home Run Derby. Anyone interested? Stanton will probably win, if not Cespedes. Although, I guarantee Cespedes could throw more balls over the wall from home plate, than anyone in baseball.

Just finished watching it, really expected it to come down to Stanton and Cespedes but my prediction was honestly Cespedes coming out victorious again.

Todd really surprised me considering he only had 2 to start the Derby, but his 2nd appearance really had me out of my seat at times.

Overall this year's derby was meh, most likely due to the new rules about having 7 outs instead of the usual 10, I'm pretty sure that changed the entire derby and the player's attitude coming into each at-bat.

As for Trout being the MVP of the first half, I doubt it.. it was mostly Nelson Cruz, even though I don't like the guy.. or possibly Victor Martinez. Judging by MLB Network (daily viewer) Trout's 1st half was under the radar for me, mostly due to the fact that whenever I watch him, he's striking out 3 times or going 0-4 with a walk or RBI. Don't get me wrong, great player.. but I've seen at least 5 other players having a better year so far than he's having.

And oh yeah, wouldn't feel right without adding this monster shot

But seriously, don't just listen to me. Search "mlb first half awards", skim through the articles, I guarantee you will find Mike Trout is the MVP/AL MVP in the vast majority of them.
