Yeah I read about this earlier. Here's the article I read. http://www.topgear.c...rupt-2011-12-19

Rather tragic.

It had to happen - not enough car for that kind of cash (€30,000 for a basic-spec different looking Vectra?!) they had to go bankrupt.

I'm gonna miss the quirky brand.

It was always the "other Volvo" to some people, but I loved my 9-3 convertible's floor-mounted ignition. It got looks from a handful of people as well. tounge.gif

That's actually quite a shame, I've always liked Saabs, and I think the current (Well, I guess previous now) generation 9-3 is an under-rated car. My mum's owned a couple of German saloons over the past couple of years, a 2005 Mercedes C180 and a 2010 BMW 320i, between the two she owned a 2007 Saab 9-3 1.9TiD 'Vector Sport Anniversary' (Came in a unique paint colour and trim), she liked the 9-3 over the others so much she's since sold the BMW and now drives a 2003 9-3 2.0T Aero. It's got a couple of quirky features, mainly the 'Night Panel' and the centre console mounted ignition. But apart from the gimmicks it is, in our opinion, a very nice car to be in.

Some Saabs;

Saab was on life support when GM bought them. If they weren't bought, Saab would have died then.

I know GM kept them going another 15 or so years, but they also made them rather generic. The 1st gen 900's and everything before were some rather unique vehicles. Everything lately was so obviously product shared that GM blocked the sale to the chinese because it would have given the chinese access to basically every other GM platform out there. lol

Oh well. That's the way it goes I suppose.

I still blame GM for the little marketing promotion besides magazine ads. I'm pretty certain that the last time I've seen a Saab commercial was all the way back in 2003. Some of you may disagree, but marketing really helps a product exceed, and that just wasn't happening with Saab. Especially up until more recently.

I blame GM entirely for this debacle. They seem to have an "if we can't have it, no-one can" attitude to Saab. I mean, look at the various plans to save it- the Chinese, Spyker...

Unfortunately, it was nothing but an overpriced Buick Lacrosse. The fundamental problem with Saabs in general over the past decade; nothing but lowly GM models in fancy clothing with blown up price tags.

Doesn't exactly make them bad vehicles, though. Everyone is platform sharing these days, so it's really nothing out of the ordinary.

One of my biggest gripes with the industry in general. But I guess you can't afford originality in this failing economy.

I don't know what to say really. Saab has meant a lot to me. My grandfather must be turning in his grave right now, he never drove anything besides SAABs.

Either way it's sad, really sad. Rest in peace sad.gif

Also known as "Trollywood", since they produce a lot of Swedish films there. Now that's even more funny.

My father drove an older 900. We called it the cockroach and although I thought it was pretty ugly I came to respect the thing. It had balls and my dad loved it to death. Coincidentally I'm looking for a used car at the moment and one that has caught my eye is a 2002 9-3 turbo.

I hope they can dig themselves out of this.

What a Saab Story, but don't cry a river of tears just yet, Maybe they can still restructure and recover, I don't see them lacking the product in lineage sense anyway. Haven't followed them in current years, but I did ride in one once upon a time

Not even. They just arent very popular with the kids who buy honda civics and rice them all to hell when a 9-3 turbo could destroy a kitted up honda with ease. As 4 bangers go you really can't do much better than a saab.

I love the look of the old 900 turbos. But almost all of them I have looked at had some serious issue.

our mother grooms and cut dogs for half a living, one of her customers has 3 900 turbos, all beefed up to 250hp. He says he has had incredibly few problems with them, and recommend me to buy one as a first car smile.gif

I imagine you'll struggle insurance-wise if your in Europe, but they are pretty notorious for being bullet-proof mechanically. The bodies, however, are very prone to rot.

Well...

On a related note, my brother recently (before Saab went completely bust) bought a 1st gen 9-5 (I think its a 2005 model). Its actually a rather pleasant little thing...
