Grand Theft Auto - Backup is a must have program for any GTA PC player, modder or not!

GTA Backup 2.0 is currently in development. Please see this post for more details and future features.

What Is GTA - Backup?
GTA - Backup is a small application that will automatically backup your saved games when you launch a GTA game though this program.

What Games Does GTA - Backup Work With?
This application will backup your saved game for GTA III, Vice City, San Andreas, IV and Episodes From Liberty City.

Do I Really Need GTA - Backup?
Every PC gamer has lost saved games due to a bad mod, hard drive problem or accidental deletion.
Unfortunately it is only after you have lost a saved game this question will be answers for you.
So save yourself the pain of having to start your game over, by downloading GTA – Backup before it is too late.

How Do I Install GTA - Backup?
Simply extract your download (grand_theft_auto_backup_v1.4.0.zip) to your desired location. When you run GTA - Backup for the first time, click the settings button and check the paths for each game are correct.
The default settings should be correct if you installed your games with the default settings, other than GTA IV & EFLC. GTA IV & EFLC require you to select your saved games location.

When Does A Backup Get Done?
By default GTA - Backup will check if a backup is required (Will check if the saved game file has changed) while you are playing (every 15 minutes) and when you close your GTA game.
You can however customize when GTA - Backup will check your saves, by selecting to backup Pre Run, During Run (Every 15 minutes) or Post Run.

Where Do Backups Get Saved?
GTA - Backup puts your backed up saved games in a “backup” folder in the save location as your saved games. In this folder there is a child, parent, grand parent and archive structure.
Child backups are your most recent, then parent backups, then grand parent backups followed by archive backups which are compressed to save space.

How Can I Show My Appreciation?
By simply posting a thank you comment on GTA Garage or GTA Forums, I will know my time and effort has been worth wile.
And if you are feeling very generous you can donate a little something (even just a £1 or $1) via the PayPal link on my website (see above).

Version 1.1.0 should be done sometime next week.

The new version will have a better way of ordering your backups, will compress oldest backups and will only backup if the saved game has actully changed.

Also if I get the chance I will make a GUI to setup and edit the settings of the program.

It would be cool if it'd be as ASI script. For III and VC people wouldn't have to download anything yet, SA, IV and EFLC would need ASI Loader (most people have it in their GTAs though). The main advantage is that you wouldn't need to boot games via external EXE, everything would be copied automatically.

If you want, I can help making this for III, VC and SA (I don't have IV nor EFLC).

Version 1.3.1 has now been released.
Had requests from a couple of users to add an option to remove GTA games that are not installed. I have now added an "Is Installed" setting for each game. When you first run GTA - Backup you will need to edit teh setting to let the application know what GTA games you have installed.

@SilentPL: That is a good idea. I have a couple of other ideas I'm working on just now but will look into that and give you a PM if I need some help.

Other than any bug fixes, this will be the last release for a while.
I have started work on v1.5 which is a complete re-code (code was messy to start with, and got worse as I added new features) and will include a mod install/backup function. Due to other projects I am working on my spare time is limited, so I don't know when I'll be done with v.1.5.
I would say that if you like the program give me some feedback. So far for the 500-600 downloads I've had accross GTA Garage and my website, I have only had two people post feedback confused.gif .

Mad props my friend. Your hard work has def been enjoyed by the community. They may not say much but the download count speaks for itself. You know us modders are, so if it's good enough to please us you've made a good contribution to the community!

Edit:

Holy crap! My signature is seriously out of date, lmao!

Thanks very much 007dust.

Its been a while since I updated this program, but I have not forgotten about it. Currently got a a few prototypes of 1.5 floating around to see how to do some things the best way. Unfortunatly due to other projects and my day job I dont have much time to work on GTA Backup, but think 1.5 should be released before the end of 2012 anyway.

Since it's bumped already, any success making it as an ASI plugin?

Hey SilentPL. Not looked into it again since we were last discussing it. Once I get some free time I'll PM you and have a look into it again.

Project On Hold

I have recently moved my final Windows machine to Linux. Although this is good for me and many of my other projects, it means all my Visual Studio based projects are on hold.

GTA Backup however is one of the few that I do plan to migrate to another language and continue work on. This will not only allow me to continue the project, but will also allow me to support the Linux GTA players (who play with using WINE).

I expect to have GTA Backup rewritten in another language by Feb 2013, so expect beta versions of 1.5.0 around March.

I will be needing Windows testers, so if you currently use GTA Backup and want to help out, PM me and let me know.

Everyone seems to be getting excited with GTA V almost here. I've had a few requests/suggestions for GTA V images so put together this pack of 6 backgrounds to customize your GTA Backup.

Download from GTA Garage or the GTA - Backup website.

Project Update

After posting the GTA V backgrounds I had another look at GTA Backup. Due to the source code being a mess and new ideas requiring a different approach the current code is not much use, so 1.5.0 has been scrapped.

Instead I have started writing GTA Backup 2.0 from scratch.

GTA Backup 2.0 will include all previous features as well as;
Support for GTA 1, London & GTA 2.
ASI launcher (thanks SilentPL for the ideas and help).
And other additional small features and advanced settings.

The biggest new feature will be a new Modification backup utility, which will allow you to backup game files before you install mods.

Time is short so I have no release date (if you want it sooner nip over to my website and hit the donate button tounge.gif ), although all previous features have been implemented into GTA Backup 2.0 and I am well into adding the new features.

If you have any ideas for things you'd like in GTA Backup, just post and let me know.
