Pretty sure I just did a basic google search.

From memory I couldn't find many good shots of it either & none of them really matched that well, even though we know it's the right one.

As for deleting them, I actually think they were lost when my other PC decided to sh*t itself.

It happened twice  & I lost a few thousand images.  I wouldn't have deleted them on purpose for no reason.

Do you think we should just use my picture? It's the only clear picture of the place we've found.

Also a video of it (credit to Slate MC for posting it at Mystery Thread about 1 month ago), after about 10 mins it will show and there're some other detail's captions after that:

You have some nice view of the Salton Sea from there.

Hope it helps you decide.

Hey Eram.  Glad we could help each other out.  Thanks heaps.

You guys on the Mystery Thread are just as crazy & obsessed focussed & dedicated as us.

It's hard to get the right information for some reason, but I think the Mountain Station has recently been renovated to celebrate 50 years of operation for the tramway.

The new station doesn't look like the IG one very much, but the old station is a bit closer, even though it doesn't quite match either.

It has more of a "The Shack" look to it though, & the old carriages used to be a closer match too, but I don't think it's a like for like match.

mBzbRri.png

pAlFQnk.png

fXfWyet.png

Maybe R* have used a mountain station from a different tramway, from somewhere else in the world.

We might have to do some more digging around.

@Wayne - LOL.

I'm lousy at this photo/details checking, just trying help you guys, since I love to check this thread.

What do you think of this one (it even has some it's own kinda ufo next to it, though no 3AM, rain & 100% needed to see it  :))?

I know it's not an exact match, but imo it has some similarities:

Ah...Mont Fort.  Thanks mate.

I think somebody posted that pic back when the gameplay trailer came out, but I couldn't remember where it came from.

It's definitely one of the closest matches in terms of overall shape.

It sort of looks like R* put the roof from the Mont Fort station on top of the old Palm Springs station.  Who knows, maybe they did.

I'm really unsure about the Mt Chiliad station.  None of the IRL stations seem to have enough matching details.

In theory, it's supposed to be the Palm Springs Mountain Station, because the IG & IRL Valley Stations are a perfect match.

I just don't know.  What do the rest of you guys think?

I actually think that the Switzerland station is the inspiration the one on mount chilliad. It has so many of the same details as the in game version! Same cars, same roof, the same two columns at an angle at the back of the building. It even has the same place where you exit to after the gondola stops.

Yeah, you could be right.

I didn't notice the two angled columns/braces at the back.

I wont put it on the map just yet unless Fido or lxr agree, because there's still some doubt.

Also, I'll see if I can find the original post from last year.  Whoever posted it had a good eye.

Thanks again Eram for your help mate.

My pleasure Wayne.

If it will be accepted, I'll be glad to finally have contributed with something here, after just lurking for so long.

As I said, I'm no specialist on this like you guys/gals, I just typed "mountain top tram station" at google images and skimmed trough the results, go figure it...

When I first saw it, the roof immediatly screamed some similarity. After checking for other pics (the 1st I posted was the one found at Google Images), what actually made me post was the one showing the front view (and of course the "ufo" right beside it, Mystery Thread's twitch/tic you know? ;)).

The Mont Fort station does look like the ingame one but why on Earth would r* use that one instead of one of the numerous ones in the US ?

There are no R* zurich or R* Geneva as far as I know so why ?

Maybe there's a closer match somewhere in the rocky mountains in the US. Somewhere closest to California.

Not trying to push it, but they did chose some bridge in British Columbia for the Calafaia Bridge.

Maybe R* North went there on some brainstorming trip :)

Anyway, I'm glad I could post something that could be pertinent here and let you be the judges.

I could actually also try something about the lighthouse. I just don't think the one showing at the map is a match.

I've sailed professionaly for some 6 years and been in shipping since 94. Seen some of irl small island's lighthouses that imo are a closer match, either the island/lighthouse together or just the lighthouse building, though mostly not on the US Coast I'm affraid.

I'll try to post some pics of my best candidates, if you think it's worth it.

Yo !

I took about 20-25 pics of buildings that weren't on the map yet.

I added some but I still have about 15 to go, mostly in the harbor area.

That's some new buildings to look for people !

Excellent Fido.   :^:  :^:  :^:

I've been a bit unmotivated & busy the last week or two, but I'll get back into it again soon.

There are still lots of coloured dots to be found.

Regarding the cable car station.

Yeah, it doesn't make sense but it's very possible that R* used the shape & style of the Mont Fort station simply because it suited the look they were trying to achieve.

From interviews & articles we've read, we know they used Google street-view & Google images to get inspiration for some of the buildings.

They have done it with a few other landmarks, like the 50's diner sign that boxmonster found in the Philippines, the satellite dish array from New Mexico, plus all of the random signs around the map.

So far it's the closest match we can find, so if you guys are ok with it, I'll put it on the map.

@ Eram

If you know a thing or two about lighthouses, then by all means go for it Captain.

The Pigeon Point lighthouse is a bit like the cable car station.  It has some similarities to the Cape Catfish lighthouse but there's still some doubt.

Maybe the lighthouse is another landmark that R* have taken from somewhere else in the world because it had the right look.

BTW, I found the original post about the Mont Fort station.

It was posted by F4t4l1ty way back on page 507.  #15190

I've been reading some of the old posts from around that time.

Some great finds & predictions from back then, but some absolute shockers too.  It's quite funny to read.

I'm thinking this is a duplitcate of the Tequi-La-La building:

OMG!!!!  That's bullsh*t!!!!   It's been there the whole time????

Other than some tall skyscrapers, the Whiskey A-Go-Go/Tequi-La-La was one of the first buildings ever found on this thread.

I seriously can't believe we've never noticed they were the same.

It's amazing how a few detail changes made us think it was something different.  It's so bloody obvious now.   :monocle:

I don't know how much time we've spent looking for that one, but at least we can finally stop now.

Very, very well spotted Harry.  As Fido says, "Cookie Party"    :cookie:  :cookie:  :cookie:  :cookie:  :cookie:  :cookie:  :cookie:  :cookie:  :cookie:  :cookie:  :cookie:

The lighthouse is essentially some sort of prefabricated lighthouse, it seems to be a combination of a sparkplug lighthouse and a regular medium sized one. It doesn't seem to be based off anything real.

The Whiskey A-Go-Go was one of the first buildings to be identified nearly 3 years ago.  I mean, it's posted on page 3.

Because it was found so long ago, we haven't really paid much attention to it since then, so I suppose we were sort of shocked that it was such an easy & simple match.

Basically it's been right under our noses since the first trailer & we were too stupid to spot it.

Even though the whole of Clinton Ave is full of duplicate buildings from other parts of the game, we never matched it to Tequi-La-La, yet it's so obvious now.

The Muscle Gym has been mentioned & discussed a couple of times but nobody could find a real life match.

In the game, it looks sort of run down & abandoned, so I even tried googling demolished buildings in LA to see if I could find it.

Then you just casually come along & say "Hey guys, I think this is a duplicate"

I guess it was probably a bit of a "duh" moment for us.

EDIT.

The 3 buildings to the left of Muscle Gym are also duplicates.

I put them on the map last week but didn't post them here, so I may as well do it now.

That nearly finishes off Clinton Ave.  Just 2 to go I think.

The first one was easy.  It's just a straight duplicate of Fruit of the Vine from Hawick Ave, which IRL is McConnell's Picture Frames on Melrose Ave.

WtRs9WC.jpg

E1T66hq.jpg

SelFRFX.png

While I was getting pics of that, I thought the brickwork from Yeti + Pikey's looked similar to the XXX Adult Book Shop & Paradise Sauna.

They're of course copies of Fitzu, Kidrobot & Loyal Army from Melrose Ave.

rqZlDVU.jpg

5np5dDc.jpg

QMydVIQ.png

The next one is the Tool Shed & WyeWig.

It's just a duplicate of Vinewood Records & Eclipse Liquor Deli from W Eclipse Blvd.

IRL it's the Sunset Blvd stores in West Hollywood.

Npf2WB0.jpg

gATT7SP.jpg

3aiXoUE.png

BTW, the Sunset Blvd Stores were also identified at the same time as the Whiskey A-Go-Go.

We're a bit slow on this thread.

Ah, okay! It was just weird because I've posted duplicate buildings before, and I've never gotten that strong a response to a find like that.

Btw, you should add those Movie Studio finds last page to the map. They're not on there yet.

Ok guys, regarding the lighthouse.

Though the Pigeon point has some similarities, I've found some others that also do, though no perfect match on any.

Morris Island:

http://media-cdn.tri.../charleston.jpg

https://encrypted-tb...jb23urX6kVlZUz7

Sand Island:

http://www.lighthous...ndislandal5.jpg

In France, mainly at Bretagne, there are several famous ones, that (if merged) could have been used an inspiration for the base, some examples:

https://c1.staticfli..._a75df169c0.jpg

http://images.marina...ed_res_id/94426

http://media-cache-a...96e25fa1423.jpg

http://farm5.static....acc2af12f_m.jpg

http://farm5.static....e092b6a13_m.jpg

There are others that I could post, but I agree with boxmonster, probably the ig one was based on 2 or 3 different ones (shape, top, windows, base, etc.).

So, I'll stop my search on this. Just hope you enjoyed the pics.

Thanks Eram.   :^:

Yeah, it's seems the lighthouse could just be a merger of 2 or 3 IRL ones.

It's a pity, it would be nice to find exact matches for some of the iconic landmarks.

Another thought is to research past lighthouses from the GTA series, like the Portland Rock lighthouse from GTA III etc, or even some famous movie lighthouses.

Here are a few more pics of the Cape Catfish one if anyone needs them.  Maybe the devil is in the details.

Nothing to get too excited about.  Just a couple of landmarks from Sunset Blvd.

We probably all knew about these anyway, but I think they deserve their own dot on the map.

The vertical Sprunk billboard on W Eclipse Blvd is a replica of the vertical billboard setup at 8223 Sunset Blvd.

JMhcGzK.png

D1fkuyA.png

Below the billboards both IG & IRL is the Welcome To West Hollywood/ West Vinewood sign.

6YTqbLi.png

hhB9Igm.jpg

Tbh, I never knew the IG sign was there until yesterday.  Drove past it a million times but never really looked at it properly.

I just assumed it was the sign for the Gentry Manor/Chateau Marmont.   :sui:

Ok, I played GTA IV again and noticed that the Wirligig Theater reuses the textures from the Whitehall Building counterpart in LC.

lh0L3TE.jpg

Don't know why that took my forever to find out, The building simply stacks the same facade three times on top of each other, I always hated that.

And the little portholes on top of the lighthouse are definitely inspired by some metal prefabricated lighthouses, I think the Newport News Middle Ground Light probably has the most similarities for the top windows and balcony part.newport-news-middle-ground-lighthouse-1.

It's weird how half of the Cape Catfish lighthouse is made of stone but whatever, Rockstar.

New find :D

Apartment building, Clinton Ave, Vinewood

7023 Hawthorne Ave, Hollywood

860C014FC521009FA5729C62E3BF765E56F0FD5F

15084698500_baf9b750aa_b.jpg

The location is a match (behind the Roosevelt Hotel), so is the overall shape (rectangular with a swimming pool in the courtyard).

The facade seems to fit as well.

EDIT :

And another one. It's a duplicate but I think the one we already found is actually a modified version of this one :

Fleeca, Hawick Ave, Vinewood

8360 Melrose Ave, Hollywood

30E473126D2E669549BE2B8B884A804489CDCF1E

15085029187_3844c0beb4_b.jpg

Also, have a look at the Ritz Carlton (south downtown) in Google Street View in 2009.

There's a cinema under construction right next to it. You need to Street View it from the freeway nearby ;)

This looks awfully similar to the secondary construction just south of the Mile High Club building in LS.

I'd say it's a match but I'm waiting for your take on this. (sorry no pics I'm exhausted and going to bed :D)
