WOW that's a lot of streets searched!

First: I commend you for searching through all those streets. I don't think even I would have the patience to go through all of those!

Second: I'm not suprised you got sick of searching for those houses.

Third, (This is off-topic), but have you added the "Vote For Nobody" Graffiti?

Yeah, it's very tedious but as long as I find a few things, I don't mind doing it.

It's a bit soul destroying when you do all that searching without a match though.

About the graffiti.  Koeklin made a post about it a few months ago.

It's one of the landmarks that links some of the Rockstar studios.  Check it out.  It's a cool post.  #1065070466

That's actually why I brought it up! Yeah, it was a cool post, but I was asking if you had added it to the map on site.

Oh, sorry.  I see what you mean.  I'll add it later on.  :^:

Maybe we need to add you as one of the admins for the map.

What do you think lxr & Fido?

@ ddyoung  Here you go.
2 & 3 have slightly different colours but are placed next to each other in the game.
Not sure if they are supposed to be one single building or two.
When are you heading off to the Salton Sea Santa Monica?

NYC next Friday, Santa Monica that Wednesday. If the V map is anything to go by, buildings 2 & 3 look like they're right around the corner of my hotel.

Managed to get some new finds in the last few days, but damn it's getting hard to spot them now.

When I was getting the roller-coaster & ferris wheel pics the other day, I noticed the curved roof toilet block wasn't on the map.

Back in December, MrThingus made a great post of all the shops & restaurants on Del Perro Pier. #1064265368

The toilet block was missed, probably because the Google street-view images were taken back in 2008, but the toilet block wasn't built until August 2009, so it's only visible from the satellite images.

A quick web search gave some good images of it though.

On the map, the ferris wheel and the roller coaster don't have their real names, which are Pacific Wheel and the West Coaster respectively.

Yeah, sometimes we have to be careful with the IRL address we put on the map.

For example, if you type "900 N Alvarado St, Los Angles" into Google maps, it'll take you here.

bdHDpNG.jpg

But if you type "United Independent Taxi, 900 N Alvarado St, Los Angeles" Google has a spazzy-fit & takes you to this residential street in Burbank, about 15 miles away.

EKHSAdG.png

For buildings & landmarks that don't have an official address, like the life-guard huts on the beach or a barn in the middle of a paddock, we sometimes just use the GPS co-ordinates so Google knows where to take you.

Whenever I put an address on the map, I start with the full name & address, but if that doesn't work, I start taking out some of the information until Google gets it right.

It's a bit of a pain, but that's the way it has to be unfortunately.

About the Two Guys Plaza, I think it's a match too.  Out of all the plazas in Korea Town, it's the closest one.

It's not a perfect match but I think it's close enough to put on the map.

If we ever find a "closer" match, we can always update it.   :^:

This is the building in Vinewood that LS Customs is tucked behind.

The order of the shops have been swapped around & each shop has been slightly modified, but there's still enough details to make a match.

Aqua building.

Real life.  The Beverly Robertson building, 8797 Beverly Blvd, West Hollywood.

In game.  Unnamed art gallery, Carcer Way & San Vitus Blvd, Vinewood.

Real life.  Leica Store & Gallery, 8783 Beverly Blvd, West Hollywood.

In game.  Chair Apparent, San Vitus Blvd, Vinewood.

Yellow building.  (this one has been modified the most, but still has the horizontal timber panelling along the top & the little sloped section above each window.

What do you think of this :

ba1u6ua.jpg

It is located exactly at the same spot in LS and in LA. (510 N Robertson Blvd)

The windows are a match, there a stairway outside, and there are the purple/red thingy above the windows.

Only big deviation is the lack of pointy rooftop on the IRL one.

Looks like a match to me but since I'm not sure, I'm asking the big guys ;)

You're kidding me.  I was just about to post the same find.

I'm putting the pics together right now, so I'll post them in a few minutes.

The Penal Colony building isn't a match, but I just found the right one.  I'll post that soon too.

Edit.  Here are the pics.

Like you said Fido, everything matches except the roof-line.

The same awnings on the top & bottom windows, the same cladding, courtyard, stairs & most importantly, the exact location to IRL.

Here's the Penal Colony building.

It's on the same street as the last find & just like in the game, it's right next door to the Oldie But Goodie antique shop.

I'm so glad we found that antique shop. It was obvious there was an IRL counterpart. Too many details.

Great job on the Penal colony one as well. I'm glad you proved me wrong ;)

@harry : I just added your parking lot mate ;)

Haha...we must have literally passed by each other in street-view at some point.

I'd been up & down N Robertson Blvd 2 or 3 times over the weekend but didn't spot the antique shop until tonight.

I actually thought Penal Colony could be this building, also on N Robertson.

YVKQtDX.png

I was just about to post it & ask you guys what you thought, but I scrolled up the street one more time & stumbled across the antique shop.

@ Harryhenry.

I only had a brief look for the mansions last year.  I haven't been back to search for them since.

If you're going to search for them I'd probably start near the Los Angeles Country Club first.

Just keep in mind that a lot of the IRL mansions have really high fences & lots of trees blocking the street-view, so you'll need to use a combination of street-view & birds-eye view.

Also, we all have full-time jobs & families etc, so it can take a few days before we get a chance to search or add things to the map.

Sometimes we'll wait until there are a few things to add so we can do them all in one hit, but don't worry, we'll get them all on.   :^:

Yes!  Nicely spotted mate.   :cookie:  :cookie:  :cookie:

That store has been bugging me for a while.  It makes it hard with those construction hoardings in the way.

Fido, you probably know this already, but if you're using the newer version of Google Maps, it allows you to view the older/previous street-view images.

I normally use the older version because it runs quicker on my computer, so I only found out about this a couple of days ago.

It's a great feature & will definitely come in handy for some of those demolished or altered buildings.

Here's a pic from 2012 without the hoardings.

Tfspxvb.png

Edit.

Fido, are you still having trouble changing photos or putting new ones on the map?

I think the extension was made to fit Ponsonbys into the building. And nice find Fido!

Also, does the grandtheftdata.com website have some kind of guide for the various dots around the map made to mark out the various LA landmarks?

Thanks guys!
I didn't know about the old streetview images! Very useful feature indeed.
Actually, I don't use the new Google Maps cause it doesn't hâve birds eye view yet. But I will now!

And Wayny, I don't hâve problems with the map anymore. Works perfectly now and it' much faster than before.
It's a pleasure adding things now

EDIT : about the color coding on the map, there is no legend yet but here's how it goes :

red : landmark

light blue : retail

dark blue : office

light green : residential

dark green : hotel

purple : restaurant

pink : entertainment

yellow : industrial

brown : government

orange : public

white : transportation

cyan : natural

grey : other

Can someone put the streets (In-game equivilants in brackets):

Melrose Ave (Hawick Ave), Venice Boulevard (Vespucci Boulevard), and the Santa Monica Boulevard (Boulevard Del Perro) on the map, like what we did for Muholland Drive (Marlowe Drive)?

Also Fido, Someone should pu that legend on the Website somewhere. It would be great for newbies!

We can't really cause most streets aren't a perfect recreation of their IRL counterparts.

Some are obvious like Hollywood/Vinewood Blvd, Eclipse/Sunset but I believe we're talking about less than 10 streets.

Let's hear what the other think but that's a bit irrelevant to me.

Fido, the map in general is working fine for me too, but for some reason it's not loading the new images I'm trying to put in.

I just remember the other day you thought lxr or I were messing around with the map while you were trying to add images too.

There's a couple of finds without images now, but I'll fix them up again soon.

About the older street-view images.  I've been playing around with it for a bit.  It's really handy.

When you select a year for the older images, it displays it in a little inset while still keeping the current image on the main screen.

Like this.

lv5qEuB.png

The cool thing is, when you scroll along the street, the little inset scrolls along with you.

So when you come up to a newish looking building or a construction site, you simply glance up at the inset to see what was there before.

Also good for when there's a friggin bus or truck in the way of that perfect shot.

I'm going around now trying to spot some older buildings.  You never know.

BTW, Purple = Restaurant  :p

Edit.  @ Harry.

What Fido said is right.  Most of the IG streets are made up from several IRL ones, or they might start off as one IRL street but end up as a completely different one at the other end.  It'll start getting too complicated & messy.

I agree about the colour legend on the map though.  A few people have asked about it.

Lxr will have to sort that out though, but we haven't seen him for a while.  Probably sitting on a beach somewhere with his feet up.

Yeah I tried the new streetview earlier this morning and it is truly great!
Now if only Google could put Birds eye view back in the new Maps, that would be perfect.

^^ Hit this little button here.

zWZXhhT.png

It's sort of an active version of Birds-Eye View.  Things tilt & move as you scroll past.

Not sure if it works in all the same areas as the older version though.

EDIT.

A couple months ago I posted this find from Chumash/Malibu.

Even though their was a bit of doubt about the right hand part of the building looking a bit different to IG, we were pretty sure it was the right one.

1sWLSvq.png

Sometime prior to 2011, the building looked exactly like the IG one.

This is what it looked like when Rockstar went through Malibu on their recon trip.

As a bonus, it used to be Spic & Span Cleaners instead of No Marks Cleaners.

Check out the older street-view image.

EaeOAnz.png

smw55rJ.jpg

I'm loving the new Google Maps features.

I seriously think it will help us make a few new finds.  Just wish it ran as quick as the old version.
