damn you guys are good. I spent a hour on the pacific coast highway and couldn't find any of the missing houses.

@ pokemon4ever
There's a very good chance those Chumash homes are not on the East Pacific Coast Hwy.
This one (next door to the ones you took photos of) was found on Sunset Plaza Dr in West Hollywood.

cfrHs6S.jpg
Tqy4yEZ.jpg

They may be in the hilly estates on the inland side of the hwy, but they could literally be anywhere in LA.  Good luck.   :D

@ lxr
Great job on the map.  It's working really well.   :^:
Regarding the loop road in the JTNP, I wasn't sure about it at first.
I wasn't going to worry about it but thought I'd just post it to see what you guys thought.
There are a few other distinctive pieces of road in real life & in the game, so I might do a bit more digging around.

EDIT.
@ Fido
Have you got any pics of the LAX terminals you were talking about?

EDIT 2.
Not sure if you guys already know, but there are google street-view images for some of the walking trails in the JTNP. Not all of the trails but some of the main ones at least.
Some poor google employee has been told to strap a camera to his head & walk around the desert for a few days. Actually, that's probably a better job than the ones most of us have got.
If we get sick of looking at houses & buildings & want a change of scenery for a break, we might be able to spot a few rock formations or other features from the game, like the look-outs etc. Probably a long-shot though.

Yep, I took some and added them to the map :)

EDIT : I finished adding all my pics for now.
Every identified building now has an ingame picture attached except four of them (Trevor's Airfield, Senora National Park, Gas Station near sandy Shores and 3669 Wild Oats Dr in Vinewood).
About that last one, I went there to take a pic but the ingame building looks nothing like the real address. I left it on the map for now if Wayny or lxr have an explanation for this.

Also, I added the big antennas in the desert and I think they are based on the Very Large Array Radio Telescope located in New Mexico. Maybe it has been found before but here it is anyway :

I'm pretty sure about this one. Even though the colonnade on top has been removed and the motif on the first floor has been added to all windows.

Ingame : Office building, clinton Ave, Vinewood

IRL : The Broadway Hollywood, 6300 Hollywood Blvd

Nice find.

I think yes to the first one  :^:, but no to the second one.   :v:

Just added the last 4 photos to the map.  Wasn't sure if you meant Sandy Shores or McKenzie Field airport.  I had pics of both, so they're both done.

You're right, 3669 Wild Oats Dr was a mistake.  It's back on the "unidentified" map now, with a pic.

I can't remember if the radar dishes were ever identified or even discussed much.  They could be the ones in New Mexico.

Are they the dishes that picked up the "WOW 6EQUJ5" signal?  If so, that ties in nicely with the 6EQUJ5 graffiti on Silent Probe Mountain.

EDIT.

Here's that bonus find from yesterday.

Real life.  Tom's Burgers, 2861 Sunset Blvd, Silver Lake.

In game.  Horny's Burgers, Mirror Park Blvd & E Mirror Dr, Mirror Park.

7qvkvRC.png

It's a building we probably should've spotted a lot earlier.  It was exactly where it should be IRL.

Nice find !

I kinda agree about the Go Postal warehouse but it's the closest find I saw. And it's a post office as well. But I agree, that's not enough.

Also, what's a WOW 6EQUJ5 signal ? ^^

Not the New Mexico dishes but they could still be the ones.

This is the artwork on Silent Probe Mountain.

m5VYZCW.jpg

Btw, when I was getting that info just then, I saw this image.

GJ41TiI.jpg

They are in a similar layout to the in-game dishes.

I'll see if I can find out where the pic was taken.  Looks promising though.

Do you know what layout of the New Mexico dishes are in?

EDIT.

Just read something else.  The signal was detected the night before Elvis Presley died.  Freaky.

I was just a kid but actually remember that day, wondering why my sister & her friends were crying.

Damn, I'm getting old.

EDIT 2.

My bad.  That image is from the same site in New Mexico.

The layout isn't the same as the in-game one, it just looks like that in the photo.

They seem to be the only large series of dishes in the SW corner of the USA though, so i reckon they could be the ones.

Clever easter egg indeed.

So, what about this :

@ coach_wargo
Yeah, I love Easter eggs like that. It's very subtle but ties in nicely with the alien theme that's in the game.
That comes from a secrets & conspiracies thread I was reading a while ago.
I think they also had some interesting info on that large mural in Textile City, but I can't remember what it was.

EDIT. This mural.
7dUCFtT.jpg

@ Fido
Nice find on the Mirror Park Mall, but I'm with you regarding the house. I don't think it's a match either.
That house will be a good one to find though. I think there's about 10 duplicates of it in Mirror Park alone.

Also, I take back what I said about deleting the Snapmatic images.
That's a pleasure compared to putting the unidentified buildings on the map.
It must have driven you mad in Mirror Park, typing a similar address for each house & shop.
You must've typed the word Mirror a couple hundred times.
I'll finish adding the unidentified Paleto Bay buildings later on today, then get started on Sandy Shores & Grapeseed.

I thought by now you guys would be at least close to mapping. Because IMO there isn't so many buildings in the city of Los Santos nor Blaine County.

Hey guys, just letting you know all of the unidentified buildings from Paleto Bay & Grapeseed are now on the map.

Most of the Sandy Shores & desert buildings are done too, just a few houses left to go.

I'll work my way along Route 68 & then double check the top portion of the map for any other buildings.

It looks nice & colourful now when you click on "show all landmarks".  It was looking a bit empty & unloved compared to the lower half of the map.

Earlier today, I was having a quick google search for X, but ended up finding Y & Z.

They are just derelict old buildings that I thought we'd never find, so I was pretty stoked to stumble across them.

I'll post the pics soon.

Also, how did we come to the conclusion that the Sandy Shores Airfield was based on the Salton Sea Airfield?

I couldn't find any pics or street-view to back it up.

Is it just an assumption or was there some evidence posted a while ago?

EDIT.

Fido, if there was ever any doubt about the Very Large Array satellite dishes, just check out the back of them.

Well, this settles it I guess. Don't know why we didn't find it before.
Good job ln the map. I checked it regularly and there were more and more dots each time.
I had a quick look at some buildings in Grapeseed/Lamont but couldn't find a match. Was a very quick search though so...
I added two big villas on the hills overlooking Chumash. One of them is Madrazo's villa. It should have a RL counterpart since its design is quite elaborate.

Yeah, the back of those satellite dishes are almost a copy & paste job.

There might be a couple more tricky finds left in Lamont, but I've pretty much picked over it a few times & couldn't find anything either.

It's interesting that so many finds come from that town, but I can't work out what other town was used as a main reference for the Grapeseed area.

There just seems to be a few random finds from here & there.

Also, do you mean Devin Weston's villa overlooking Chumash?

If so, I've got heaps of pics taken from the blimp if you need any aerial shots.

The other house on the Chumash Hill looks a little bit similar to the house Brad Pitt used to own.  I don't think it's a match but it has some similarities.

I think it's since been sold to Ellen DeGeneres & Portia De Rossi.  Hey, I live with 3 females, what did you expect?

I'll post the latest finds soon.  Haven't had a chance to get the matching in-game shots of them.

The Formula 1 is starting soon, so I'll do it after the race.

It's my other passion.  (besides celebrity gossip)

Yeah I meant Devin Weston. Got the names confused.

You can change the pic for those two houses if yours show them better. Which I'm sure they do.

I'll check the Brad Pitt house.

I used to love F1 as well but now that it's broadcast on a paying channel, I can no longer watch it.

And new rules are making it less interesting. Plus the engine sounds are so bad this year !

And I don't like when one driver/team is way better than the field. These past years it was Vettel, now it's Hamilton. Kinda boring IMO...

Looking at the runway layout it seems Sandy Shores Airfield is more based on Thermal Airport than on Salton Sea Airport.

the location of Thermal also makes it more likely to be the inspiration. It's located between Palm Springs and Salton Sea, where as Salton Sea Airport is located right by the Sea.

Layout is closer to the ingame one, but Thermal is way too big compared to the ingame airfield.

I reckon it could be the Riverview Airport in Needles, on Route 66.
The hanger matches both the Sandy Shores hanger & the one at McKenzie Field, especially the writing on the roof.
I've got these pics but I haven't had a chance to find any more yet.
Could also be Myer's Field airstrip too, which is an abandoned Airforce strip.
Maybe that's where the control tower comes from boxmonster, but I haven't seen any pics of it yet.

I like that theory Wayny. The hangar looks close to the ingame one. Plus there's a gas station/garage just besides it.

A shame that the landing strip isn't there anymore but I checked older pics and the layout was kinda similar to the ingame one.

No sign of the control tower though.

Hey guys, I think I've figured out the Sandy Shores airstrip & have got a theory on the control tower.

It's will be a long post, so I'll need a day or so to put the pics together.

In the meantime, here are those ruins I was going to post yesterday.

I thought they would exist IRL, but wasn't sure we'd ever find them.

Real life.  Garage ruins, 69099 Historic Route 66, Ludlow, CA.

In game #1.  Garage ruins, Marina Dr, Sandy Shores.

Real life.  Aboned farmhouse, 69099 Historic Route 66, Ludlow CA.

In game #2.  Abandoned farmhouse, Joshua Rd, Harmony.

Gj3xYtW.png

q21BunA.png

EDIT.  Fido, you must've posted while I was typing this one.  I'll put a post together tomorrow.

And that gas station, not a match unfortunately.

EDIT 2.  They have the same approx address, as they are across the road from each other IRL.

Excellent.   Well spotted.   :^:  :^:  :^:

Never thought to look for that, but why wouldn't it exist IRL?

About the airfield, it's been right under our noses the whole time.

It's right next door to something we already found over a year ago.   :panic:

Edit.

Lmao.  Look at the map in my last post.  What are the chances?

Nearly finished putting the pics together for the Sandy Shores Airfield.  Just need a couple more in-game shots.

I've also put the Logger Beer Lumberjack statue on the map with the IRL Paul Bunyan statue from Maine.

It was posted a while ago, but I don't know if we confirmed it or not.  I'm pretty sure it's the right one though.

If you guys have got any doubts, I'll take it off again.

Here are a couple more landmarks from the Salton Sea area.

The sunken caravan is a quite well known & photographed landmark, but by chance, I spotted the water/fuel tank in the background.

I only noticed it because I took a few pics of it the other day for the unidentified map.

As you can see in the older & newer shots, the tank stand has since collapsed & the caravan has deteriorated a fair bit more

The google street-view in Bombay Beach is from 2008, so from 5th Street, you can still see the tank over the top of the levy bank.

Real life.  9500 Avenue E, Bombay Beach. (approx)

In game.  Marina Dr, Sandy Shores.

Is there a map key anywhere on the grand theft data map?  I have no idea what the different colors indicates for the landmarks.
