lxr, I'll see if I can find the original photo again.  Might take a few days though as I didn't save the page, I just dragged the image to my desktop.

I still can't get the street names to appear.  I've tried while logged in & logged out.

No matter where I am on the map, my mouse curser is always the 4 way arrow.  It only changes to the finger when I hover over a coloured dot, but never changes to a pointer.

I just updated it, it didn't work for the last 30 mins or so, but now it's back, at least for me. If it still doesn't work for you, just PM me what operating system and browser you're using, I'll look into it.

Two abandoned caravans/trailers, both on Panorama Drive, Sandy Shores.

Don't know the address of the real life one.

Stumbled across a drive through video from Bombay Beach that featured the following house.

I managed to stitch 3 frames together to give a clearer image, as the street-view image was pretty ordinary.

Real life.  9559 Avenue E, Bombay Beach, CA.

In game.  Residence, Cnr of Algonquin Blvd & Niland Ave, Sandy Shores.

Cheers lxr.  Btw, the street name map is working perfectly on all browsers now, & it's amazing.

No more hunting around for the paper map or going back into the game to find the correct street name.

Awesome finds Wayny as always !

You seriously rock mate. I absolutely enjoy all these finds of yours.

Really admire your dedication and motivation.

And lxr, great new features on the interactive map. Makes things much easier and they are some very useful stuff.

Kudos to both of you ! :)

Do you have an estimate of how many miles you've driven on Google Maps this year? ;)

Ah, P.S.:

Cheers lxr.  Btw, the street name map is working perfectly on all browsers now, & it's amazing.

No more hunting around for the paper map or going back into the game to find the correct street name.

There's one more thing I managed to extract -- the region borders from the map in the manual app. That's probably useful too, I'll add them in the coming days.

And as an aside, just for posterity, in case anyone ever tries again to parse the coordinates from that map, here's the formula:

function get_xy(point):
// map coordinates to in-game meters
    return [
        rad(point[0]) / pi * 6220 + 520,
        asinh(tan(rad(point[1]))) / pi * 6220 + 2170
    ]

It took me quite some time to figure this out. The manual app uses a Mercator projection (!!), as if San Andreas was a sphere.

Trivia time again ;)

Some may still remember when for a few days in January 2013 (from page 220 to 224) this thread exploded in a frenzy of calculations that tried to determine the exact GTA V map size. In case anyone is still interested in settling that question, there is enough data by now to give a more or less authoritative answer. Only "more or less" since the numbers below are *not* 100.00% accurate. The land mass, for example, includes bridges, but excludes a small strip of water between regions that shouldn't be there. Also, the border between Los Santos and Blaine County is not exactly where I've placed it. For all practical purposes though, the results should be good enough. I have included two images that show which areas the numbers are referring to.

That's interesting how the back part of the building looks like the Bing one. Maybe it was in the processes of renovation when Rockstar came to visit?

Sorry guys, been out of action for a couple days.

@ pokemon4ever

I used Bing maps a couple of times a while ago, but can't get the Streetside function working, so I've never used it since.

It gives a really good angled, birds-eye view of some rural towns though.  I will start to use that feature for some initial searches from now on.

@ koeklin

I didn't think Bing maps would have a street-view for Niland.  Does it do Bombay Beach, Salton City & West Shores etc?

If it does, I might have to get you to take a couple snaps if I can't find any decent images.

It would be great if you could take a few snaps of the shops in those towns.  I reckon there might be a find or two there.

@ lxr

There were so many pages discussing the size of the map pre-release.

How good would it have been to have that data available back then.

But wow, That's a large percentage of water on the map.  I suppose once you count the narrow coastline around the entire map, plus the docks & Alamo Sea, it does add up.  It just doesn't feel like that much though.

Regarding the miles searched on Street-view.  I have no idea.  I'm a bit embarrassed to add it all up.  So many more things I should've been doing with my time.    Oh well.

To get an idea though, this is a screenshot of an area I searched in Sth LA while looking for Franklin's house.

LTD6M7q.png

Adding up the orange streets gives a total of 32 miles (51 km).

The thing is, I go down one side of the street while looking sideways, then turn around & go back down the other side, so you've actually got to double the search distance.

Then add up the approx distance for each of these search areas, say 100km each (give or take), I reckon it would be about 1600 km, or close to 1000 miles.  Pretty bad eh?

Hey koeklin, I think we need your Bing Streetside super-powers for this one.

If you can snap a couple better shots of this building, that would be awesome.

Basically, there are 4 main buildings in Niland that have the same basic design, but have different layouts eg "L" shaped, "U" shaped or straight, as seen here.

You should just give up on finding the main characters homes since its all original based on various houses in the same area.

You could be right, but while searching for them we nearly always find something else anyway.

If they don't exist, well that's just too bad, but I don't mind looking because I enjoy doing it.

This house is just down the road from the Niland shops & appears on Google Street-view from 2008, but has since been demolished.  It doesn't show up on the 2014 satellite image.  I don't know if it's on Bing Street-side.  It will depend on what year they went through the area.

Pity the house is not there anymore, but the google street-view image wasn't too bad for that one.

The street-view image is a real shocker.  Believe it or not, I've actually fixed it up a bit.

After frequenting this topic, I find myself looking at the spots in the game quite a bit more, and loving it. I'm not sure how these guys remember some of the buildings out in Sandy Shores. But to it's credit that area has some great finds. I wonder how accurate the underwater landscape is? Maybe the sunken ships and planes correlate with historical events? (That would take the cake!)

Of course I can't speak for Wayne, who for the past few months has come up with matches that I guess we didn't expect anyone would ever be able to find, but... at the time when I was better at finding landmarks, the most important thing was probably to keep a large collection of images, and to keep looking at them. So that when you come across, say, an L-shaped building with an angled roof, you realize that you've seen it before. It takes some time, but can be very rewarding.

Hey, Wayne Kerr, koeklin, lxr and boxmonster, how do you manage to remember all these building while searching for them? Just wondering.

Short answer is, I don't really remember them all, but it's getting easier.  The more matches we find, the less we have to try to find, if that makes sense.

Focussing on one area at a time helps too.  After a while you start to get familiar with the buildings though & you'll occasionally spot something from another area.

I never thought about the underwater area.

It wouldn't surprise me if R* used some historical events to place ship wrecks & the like.

Maybe the under water arches & crevices are semi-accurate too, but I'm not about to start searching for them.

Some of the rock formations on the East coast do resemble real life formations though.

To be honest lxr, I'm hopeless with the city buildings.  They all look the same to me.

I find it heaps easier out in the suburbs & countryside.  The trouble is the area to search is so huge.  It just takes a lot of time, patience & luck more than skill.

You're right about the collection of images, it's a must.  That goes for real life & in-game buildings.

Most of the finds from the last couple of pages are from areas I already searched a few months ago, I just didn't know the in-game buildings very well back then.

It was an overload of information when the game came out, so having a good collection of images to look at & compare was the only way to do it.

I keep wondering what the actual in-game name of Salvation Mountain is.

"Silent Probe Mountain"? 1 result (from this very thread).

"Probe Mountain"? About 10 results (not so convincing either)

People seem to commonly refer to it as "Hippie Mountain" (more results), but that's probably not its proper name.

Here's another naming question. Only one of these can be correct:

Apologies for the bad quality of the second image. In case anyone has a better scan of the (english language) printed map, please send me a link!

And one more. Where is Galileo Park?

According to the GTA Wiki, that's the park just north of Galileo Observatory.

According to the map though, it's southeast of Baytree Canyon.

And the game itself claims it's around the Vinewood Sign. Out of ~150,000 Snapmatic photos, these are the ones automatically tagged with "Galileo Park".
