Why would it be unclimbable mountains?

In RDR it was used to block the player. In GTA V it wont serve any purpose at all (?!) because you'll be able to fly over the mountains with a helicopter or aeroplane anyway.

The supposed R* source stated that the highest mountains and those which would stop you escaping the map would be of a higher altitude than possible when flying aircraft, and therefore you wouldn't be able to fly over them. This seems like it could be accurate.

As with all of the GTA games you will probably have to unlock areas as you progress through the storyline. But did anyone think about how they will devide Los Santos. In the other games it was quite easy with rivers and oceans. But Los Santos doesn't seem to have any naturel boundaries. perhaps You start in the city, then unlock the hills and countryside and last you unlock the mountains and desert

Oh I'm sure they'll find a way. If they do decide to block unlockable areas, I think they'll probably use barriers and use tunnels like they have done in GTA III and IV. The barriers don't necessarily have to be natural such as rivers.

I hope there are areas that have to be unlocked though. The thought of exploring a brand new place is amazing imo.

Why everyone wants unclimbable mountains???
Yout want flying limit as low as it was in vice city ?
Or you want unrealistic high mountains ?? L.A. isnt located in himmalayas !!!
and you want some invissible barier at water too ??

Airplanes and something unpassable or unclimbable is just nonsense. It must be island.

Hey, did you all know that the area north of LA, just past the mountains has an Air Force base, an Army air field, a USMC LIVE FIRE training ground, and a little thing called China Lake. China lake being an R&D facility as well as Testing ground for navy areal weapons platforms and the like. I just have 4 words. ENFORCED. NO. FLY. ZONE.
To the south a USMC Base and east, just past the desert and the national parks, you have Yuma Proving Ground, an Army weapons testing area, as well as an Air Force Base. 2 Words. SEE. ABOVE.
All of these places being at least as big as LA itself.

So if things are exaggerated or compressed enough, the entire area surrounding the Los Santos region could be NO FLY as far as small aircraft are concerned. Reasons being that there might be a heightened state of alert because of terrorism or the like.

There is a "map" of the golf course in the trailer, showing exactly how it's shaped.

The reason I am saying this is because all of you seem to make your own versions of it, instead of cut-rotate-paste.

This can also be useful if we can find the golf club on the skyline picture, to understand how the map size and the buildings are in relation to eachother.

I think the way the map will be unlocked is the way RDR had it or SA

The map on the golf sign is just for that one hole, not the full course.

I think that map is a very good start.  Of course I have no proof but I expect the following will also be included:

- Santa Barbara/Malibu
- San Diego (possibly including Tijuana)
- Palm Springs (including the cable car up to the mountains)
- some kind of abandoned Gold Rush style town (a la RDR)

I also suspect the sea will come round and form the northern boundary.  Looking good though.

I'm with you on this. I've already made my case form why I'm convinced the Windfarm is the one north of Palm Springs and the mountain people think is Mt. Chilliad is actually San Jacinto.

I spent a long time last night trying to work out where the vin yard was. Southern California has a number of vin yards, but almost all the them seem to be on very flat land. The two obvious exceptions are Temecula and Shadow Mountain (both on route 79) between Palm Springs and San Diego, but I couldn't find anything similar on google street view or google images to back this up.

I thought about this to. Using google earth it seems there are a lot of vineyards in the mountains north of malibu, so that's why I put them in my map. I like the idea of the map stretching from Malibu in the west to palm springs in the east.

Heres a concept map I drew up. I included an SA map as a size comparison.

As your map is... in my eyes, the most accurate. I decided to add what I think could be included.
San Diego, Tijuana and the US-Mexico Border

Looks very accurate! I will be shocked if there is that much land in the game to transverse across. But if there is WOW wow.gif I'm all for it. Does anyone have an idea of where they would be oil wells in LA or near LA, I've tried looking and couldn't find much.

Hmmm...
I've been thinking and many of you may be right. The game map may very well be surrounded by water.
It's the easiest way to go for R*, especially with the inclusion of planes.
This wasn't an issue in RDR cause everybody knows that horses don't fly.
But, in V, the map must be surrounded by water, ala San Andreas. I don't see any other way around it and invisible barrier just wouldn't do it.

I'll update my map to make it an island but I won't add the desert or the vineyard just yet. We don't know exactly where this vineyard might be and concerning the desert, as much as I believe we will have some kind of desert area ingame, there's no confirmation yet.

Also, great find about the Air Force Base and stuff. I know there's a huge Air Force Base north of Los Angeles, in the Mojave Desert and I believe we will see something like that in V wink.gif
But there won't be 3 or 4 army bases or no-fly zone. But maybe one in the "Mojave Desert"...

Exacto. This is an analysis thread, not the "mock summin together in paint and hope for the best" thread

When I saw your post I was sure people weren't going to understand...

I'll make what you're saying a little more clear for others:

Hey guys, these maps are pretty cool and all, but it seems like you guys are adjusting your maps based on speculation. Sure we've seen those types of areas, but they are too hard to pinpoint at this time. So really, maps that mess with the area outside of Los Santos seem more like fan art than anything else. We still don't have the city mapped and we have way more reference with that.
Again, your work is appreciated....but without proper reference, it's just wild guessing....which really isn't what this thread is about.

There. How's that?

Hmm, ok, maybe the map lacks analysis, but I wouldn't call it fan art either. But then Barcasm7 felt it was the most accurate yet...though I wouldn't.

Really? There are many oil wells in and around Los Angeles, some even in the middle of the city. See if you can spot the oil wells in these three photographs:

The oil pump shown in the trailer is based off of the Inglewood Oil Field, in the Baldwin Hills, although its location has been shifted North-East.

I mostly see four word replies, no breakdown. A topic named analysis (a presentation, usually in writing, of the results of this process: The paper published an analysis of the political situation.), but it should allow people to convey their thoughts in pictures as well as words if that's how they best communicate.
