I'm not sure if this can be considered a game or not, but it sure is fun and addicting as hell. The topic description is not a lie. This "game" lets you explore the entire universe. There are literally billions of galaxies, billions of stars within each galaxy and usually 5-10 planets orbiting each star. Real-life data is used wherever possible, but as the universe is insanely huge, a lot of it is generated according to estimates.

For more info and a download, follow this link: http://en.spaceengine.org/

It's only 400MB in size.

Oh, and you can actually land on every single one of the trillions of planets. To show you how much detail there is, here are a couple of screenshots:

These screenshots aren't mine. My computer can't handle the amount of detail, but I hope some of you with beefier computers will post some screenshots of your own.
Spread the word around. This project is amazing.

This degree of exploration, and it's only 400MB? How does that work? wow.gif

Randomly generated everything perhaps? Can't think of any other way to make that much content

It's something called "procedural generation". I'm not exactly sure what that means, but I'm guessing the game just gives the computer instructions to generate mostly everything and doesn't really store much in its files. Keep in mind that every planet is unique, though.

Also, if anyone isn't sold yet, see this video:

Procedural generation means the game automaticly generates the world (in this case) based on algoritms.
Like some games with infinite terrain, but way more complex and cool.

With this you can have an enormous world, in small size. Since all you see it's generated on runtime.

My God, it runs quite slow on my computer but I just flew around 20,000 galaxies or something. It's brilliant, I highly recommend this.

Whenever I get close to a nice planet, the generation of textures causes the graphics card to crash. It sucks, because even un ticking a lot of the options that cause rubbish performance doesn't really help. Anyone had this problem or got a solution? I read around a bit and it seems common enough, sifting through oceans of threads is a pain though.

Edit: Download complete.

The most important thing to lower is LOD. Set it to -3 if you have to. I don't have a monster computer either, and my FPS goes down to 1-2 when I'm near stars that are still loading, but at least it doesn't crash anymore since I changed the LOD setting.

Great.

Now when I load it up I'm stuck right in front of my most recent planet, which happens to be one which when loading f*cks up my graphics card. So I can't f*cking do anything, let alone try to change any settings because as soon as it loads I'm frozen. May have to reinstall.

Also, I've toned down the LOD, all sorts of other things too. But the planet textures still crash, and when I re open it later on the settings are back to higher again. Arggh, anyone know any sources to look for that might have solutions? Google isn't coming up with too useful finds atm.

I've had that happen a couple of times as well, but it always eventually manages to start after a couple of tries. Also, "reinstalling" isn't really an issue if you still have the compressed file you downloaded, but you don't need me telling you that.

So far no problems, I get 20 fps though. But it's good enough imo.

But how or earth am I suppoused to see the detail on the planet? Im on it, and everything is plain, no mountains.. nothing.

Looks like it started loading the terrain and stuff, and crashed.

edit: Right, im on earth, everything looks blurry. I see a few low res mountains. Looks like it may take a while to load?

Updating my driver, trying to minimise this constant crashing while rendering planets.

Im starting to get the hang on this. I can't beleave that by randomly cliking on the stars in the background I found Betelguese A and B binary star system!
They are so awesome to see. I recommend you guys see Betelguese A, it's so odd.

I'm surfing in Betelguese B right now. It would be cool to see fire balls and sh*t in the final build.

Kinda an embarrassing question, but is the game 100%ly based of the real universe, or are most of the places made up?
This sure is very interesting, you can have unlimited fun with this project. Beg it runs on my laptop.

From what I read it uses real data to generate all the known stars, galaxies and stuff. And maybe some others are randomly generated to fill up space.

But so far I've seen many real known stars, among other things.
