These lines from Nirvana's Very Ape remind me of the way people from outside of the USA seem to view the "typical American" haha:

I take pride as the king of illiterature
I'm very ape and very nice

If you ever need anything please don't
Hesitate to ask someone else first
I'm too busy acting like I'm not naive
I've seen it all, I was here first

Such a cool song.

I don't really have favourite songs or favourite lyrics to be honest but there are a couple which really stick out at me:

1. James - Sit Down.

Now I'm relieved to hear
That you've been to some far out places
It's hard to carry on
When you feel all alone

Resonates with me as my family has a history of depression and general mental illness. Almost all of the people in my family have suffered from depression and/or breakdowns. A couple of mates have also had experience with suicide attempts so this song is pretty poignant for me, especially the bit which I've quoted and italicised. To me it is something to live by: share your problems with friends and always endeavour to help them out with their problems too because it's never nice to be alone.

For the record my own mental state is fine guys it just seems to be a thing in my family so maybe I'll hit a wall when I get older aha.

2. New Atlantic - I Know

I listen to this song whenever I'm on a fat comedown, and it always cheers me up no end. If there are any mates around me we always end up singing it at eachother in high-pitched squeals trying to imitate the song. It's a great way to alleviate stress or mental pain, or just to get lost in the moment.

3. The Who - Baba O'Riley

Sally, take my hand
We'll travel south cross land
Put out the fire
And don't look past my shoulder

The whole song is great but I picked out that because it's one of my favourite late-night driving songs. I drove up to Manchester a few months ago by night and this song, along with Free Fallin' by Tom Petty and basically the entire discography of the Happy Mondays and Bob Marley, was on for much of the way. I think that the marriage of the huge intro with the great lyrics and the style of singing is something that only a couple of other songs have done to the same degree of awesomeness. In fact I think only I Am The Resurrection by The Stone Roses and Bat out of Hell by Meat Loaf immediately spring to mind as equal to this song in the wholesomeness of the blend of musical ingredients.

"I'm eighteen
and I don't know what I want
I just don't know what I want
I gotta get away
I've gotta get out of this place
I'll go runnin in outer space
Oh yeah"

I've been traveling the land from gravel into sand
Not knowin where I'm going never havin any plans
Anything I wanted had to grab it in advance
Abracadabra there's a rabbit in my hands cause
I've got the magic stick bust the baddest tricks
Fished for a whale brought a ship up out of it
Whats that I just saw? A platypus? Naw.
Maybe its a rat crawling flat on his paws
Or a baby dragon just dragon his claws

The Moon by Flobots.

I like articulated rap, that actually tells a story. None of this Lil B, Tyler the creator bullsh*t (in my opinion, of course). Just a preference.

Soon come you will understand
The motivation of a man getting the under hand
A local yokel on a mission to get global
Lettin my vocals amass to some total
And keep the point focal, you hear me but you don't listen
You think its easy being put in this position
I freak speech, but still don't wanna preach
Ts peak thought in stimulate movement at at Emcees
Grab your gat hit the streets, that the rally cry the war horn
The Akoben, some cats is spiritually war torn--environment
So I leading a community movement
And I don't need money for me to make a community improvement
Tell me what you stand for
Would you settle for less or do you have the strength to demand more
Only time will tell, what this New World brings
Revolutions at order, check the Mood Swing, swing
Swing, swing, swing, swing, swing, swing, swing

Asheru featuring Talib Kweli.

I like the beat, but it just feels like there's atmosphere within the track, and the lyrics aren't repetitive, apart from the swing, swing lines. It all works together beautifully with the saxophone and piano.

Broken glass everywhere
People pissing on the stairs, you know they just don't care
I can't take the smell, I can't take the noise
Got no money to move out, I guess I got no choice
Rats in the front room, roaches in the back
Junkies in the alley with the baseball bat
I tried to get away, but I couldn't get far
Cause a man with a tow-truck repossessed my car

Grandmaster Flash, The Message.

This is brilliant. It always sets a wonderful scene in my head, and Grandmaster Flash hasn't fallen off in my opinion.

Staring at the wall,
I never thought this would be so hard.
How could have I been so close and never known you?
I never knew, I never knew you at all!

You will always be my father but I hope you know,
It's your fault and I'll never know what that means.
You left a void that never could be replaced.
I am dying inside but you will never see!

I always had hoped that you did not want it this way,
But no matter how hard I try you always pushed away.

These streets are crowded with cowards disguised as men.
They are paying no consequence for their actions,
So we'll all give in.

I say the same things
Over and over and over again,
But you act like you've never heard them.
We were created to set an example.
So what is this, what is this?

This is the same old story,
This is the same old scene.
We're living our lives right out of a magazine,
I guess we'll never know!

Have we gone from little to less,
To nothing at all, nothing at all?
It seems like every soul
Has been sold for a dollar or less.
So I guess we'll never know
How good it could have been.
How good it could have been!

Savor every breath
That enters your lungs,
I promise it won't last forever.
And by the time you realize
You were wrong, you'll be far gone.

Savor every breath
That enters your lungs,
I promise it won't last forever.
And by the time you realize
You were wrong, you'll be far gone!

Follow me or back out now.
Follow me with all your heart
Or back out, back out now!

We all swim in a sea of pride,
Where character is rare.
(Where character is rare)
With every passing day,
It only gets worse
And no one seems to care.

We all die wondering what if I-
What if I would have tried?
And while you're begging for life on you knees,
You'll realize you were never happy!

Have we gone from little to less,
To nothing at all, nothing at all?
It seems like every soul
Has been sold for a dollar or less.
I guess we'll never know
How good it could have been.

The clouds begin to move in rhythm,
There is a storm in the sky.

I will cause a disaster,
Create an earthquake
And watch as you shake.
I will cause a disaster,
Watch as you shake!

We all die wondering what if I-
What if I would have tried?
What if I would have tried?

I guess we'll never know!

It seems like every soul
Has been sold for a dollar or less.
I guess we'll never know

Future Tense by Sanctuary

What do you see on the news when you watch TV
War in the name of God, or a playground killing spree
Politicians promise you the world and a preacher cries
All he ever wanted was your money and a bitch on the side
What went wrong? Did society twist him?

As the snow flies
On a cold and gray Chicago mornin'
A poor little baby child is born
In the ghetto

And his mama cries
Cause if there's one thing that she don't need
It's another hungry mouth to feed
In the ghetto

People, don't you understand
The child needs a helping hand
Or he'll grow to be an angry young man some day
Take a look at you and me,
Are we too blind to see,
Do we simply turn our heads

And look the other way
Well the world turns
And a hungry little boy with a runny nose
Plays in the street as the cold wind blows
In the ghetto

And his hunger burns
So he starts to roam the streets at night
And he learns how to steal
And he learns how to fight
In the ghetto

Then one night in desperation
A young man breaks away
He buys a gun, steals a car,
Tries to run, but he don't get far
And his mama cries
As a crowd gathers 'round an angry young man
Face down on the street with a gun in his hand
In the ghetto

As her young man dies,
On a cold and gray Chicago mornin',
Another little baby child is born
In the ghetto
And his mama cries

Rush - Jacob's Ladder

The clouds prepare for battle

In a dark and brooding silence

Bruised and sullen storm clouds

Have the light of day obscured

Looming low and ominous

In twilight premature

Thunder heads are rumbling

In a distant overture

All at once the clouds are parted

Lights streams down in bright unbroken beams

Follow men's eyes as the look to the skies

The shifting shafts of shining weave the fabric of their dreams

Arctic Monkeys - The Jewelers Hands

If you've got lessons to teach me,

I'm listening, ready to learn

There's noone here to police me

I'm sinking in, until you return

If you've got lessons to teach to me,

Don't deviate, don't be afraid

Without the last corner piece I can't calibrate

Lets get it engraved

The Smiths - How Soon is Now?

I am the son

and the heir

to a shyness that is criminally vulgar

I am the son and heir

of nothing  in particular.

Morrissey - Irish Blood, English Heart

I've been dreaming of a time when,

The English

are sick to death of Labour

and Tories

and spit upon the name Oliver Cromwell

and denounce this royal line that still

salutes him

and will salute him

The Cribs - Be Safe

I'm tethered to this post you've sunk in me

and every clear afternoon I'll think of you, up in the air,

Twisting your heel, your knees up around me, my face in your hair,

you scream so well, your smile so loud, still rings in my ears.

Don McLean - American Pie

I saw Satan laughing with delight

The Day, the music died.

Bon Iver - The Wolves Act 1 & 2

Someday my pain

Someday my pain, will mark you

Harness your blame

Harness your blame, walk through

With the wild wolves around you

In the morning, I'll call you

Send it farther on.

Solace my game,

Solace my game, it stars you,

Swing wide your crane,

Swing wide your crane and run me through.

Phil Collins-In the air tonight

Well if you told me you were drowning, I would not lend a hand
I've seen your face before my friend, but I don't know if you know who I am
Well I was there and I saw what you did, I saw it with my own two eyes
So you can wipe off that grin, I know where you've been
It's all been a pack of lies

And one day we will die
And our ashes will fly from the aeroplane over the sea
But for now we are young
Let us lay in the sun
And count every beautiful thing we can see

From In The Aeroplane Over The Sea by Neutral Milk Hotel.

I can't describe why I like this lyric. I guess my own interpretation of it is about the joy of living, despite knowing that one day we will all die.
Or anything, really, but either way I love this song, and album.

I close my eyes and seize it
I clench my fists and beat it
I light my torch and burn it
I am the beast I worship...

And I know soon come my time
For in mine void a pale horse burns
But I fear not the time I'm taken
Past the point of no return.
Wage war like no tomorrow
Cuz no hell there won't be one
For all who deny the struggle
The triumphant overcome

Trips to where, few have been
Out of thin air, upon high winds
Rites begin when the sun descends
Have felt what few will ever know
Have seen the truth beneath the glow,
Of the ebb and flow, where roots of all mysteries grow
I am below, so far below
The bottom line
Transmitting live, transmissions rise
From the depths out of controlled by
Suspended glance of an unblinking eyes
Imminent gaze cast 'pon the path that winds
'Pon the path I find, and claim as mine
To ride the waves, of unrest
Made to make me shine as a testament
To why the ways of the blind will never get
sh*t but shanked by my disrespect
Dismiss this life, worship death
Cold blood night of serpent's breath
Exhaled like spells from the endlessness
In the bottomless wells of emptiness
Channeled to invoke what we represent

Secret order
Elitist horde of
Creeping fire
Seizing power
Riders of the lupus hour
Eye on palm
Time is gone
Moonlight drawn
Fly til dawn
Sacrifice to rise beyond
Deep inside the violent calm
Of the coming storm
In blood sworn
To glorify and for life adorn
With all that dies to become unborn

I close my eyes and seize it
I clench my fists and beat it
I light my torch and burn it
I am the beast I worship...
I am the beast I worship

In the time before time eyes 'bove which horns
Curve like psychotropic scythes
And smell of torn flesh bled dry
By hell swarms of pestis flies
Vomiting forth flames lit by
An older than ancient force
That slays this life with no remorse

The spiral storm
Of flames inside
The torch I raise
The force I ride

Feel my vessel go up in flames
Flesh torch lit by thee unnamed
Direct connection to the source
Vestment of unnatural force
Forever burning black torch
Wisdom of the old and true
Possessed by the chosen few
Shining to reveal the ways
Of a darkness that pervades
All that is and ever was
Inferno of witches blood

Worship is not on bended knee
Nature knows not of mercy
To pray is to accept defeat
Power pisses on the weak
Bow and beheaded by the beast
Beggar on a bitches leash
Scum is desperate for relief
Worship is the way I ride
Witching currents through the eye
Of storms that force the false to die
Worship the flames with which I rise
Into apocalyptic skies

Harsh winds flay mine flesh to bone
In splintered skeleton I roam
Wastelands with not to call my own
But the path I walk alone
The hunger burns, within my gut
As my bones turn into dust

And I know soon come my time
For in mine void a pale horse burns
But I fear not the time I'm taken
Past the point of no return
Wage war like no tomorrow, know well there wont we one
For all who deny the struggle
The triumphant overcome ...

I close my eyes and seize it
I clench my fists and beat it
I light my torch and burn it
I am the beast I worship...
I am the beast I worship

I stand alone, Burned every bridge overthe troubled water,
No longer hiding from my personality disorder
A stronger tide is coming,
I've been running
trying to function fine
without my mind climbing out this f*cking corner
I was born a thorn away from the rotten petals
A forgotten rebel craft in the absence of heaven's heavy hands
to develop an evident level of benevolence
so it's probably better I sold my soul to the devil.
This is a message to anyone I met that thinks they know me,
Don't pretend to understand none of the issues that I'm holding.
I was in a rush to grow up,
look Mom no cuts
Just a stomach in disgust,
and the fear that I might go nuts this year If I don't slow up I'll see you on my way
One day this sh*t'll kill me but I guess that it's OK
I've lost all faith in a world so full of hate
and I don't f*cking love music I just use it to escape
I'm caught between wanting to punch someone in the face
and putting a bullet in my head to leave the human race
Everything takes its toll but there's no tolls I can take
I haven't yet found a good reason to be awake
Introducing the corroded bumps I hide behind my smile
I'm angry at the universe for the way she treats me now
And keeps me down,
stealing all my energy
I'm feeling like my enemy,
concealing my identity
Not dealing with my tendencies,
I peel the skin and then I squeeze
The real imprinted Hanse Disease not human in this century,
I'm kneeling to the entity
Who built this penitentiary,
as filthy as a centipede
And guilt was in his sense cause he
was willing to just let me bleed,
While I wore a game face
In 10 years don't check for me I'll be in the same place
This planet's just an over-populated mental hospital
Each zombie walk around constitutes another obstacle
So here it is I'm finally coming out my shell
All 19 years of my life have been in conflict with myself
I'm insecure by every facet of my existence
From my addictions,
to the condition I choose to live in
Who you kidding?
I suffer from excess anxiety
A product of pollution in American society
Stare into my eyes and see the hell that burns inside my mind
and I no longer have an ego I can hide behind
but I've been trying disregarding my insanity
Every form of art isolates us from humanity
But it's provoked against being force fed so f*ck education for a decade and 3 years of headaches from my peers Cause now I realize I could have learned more on my own
They taught me how to know everything except my soul
Which is everything I need to grow Everything that keeps me whole Everything that ever meant anything to Eyedea So
I leave with golden hopes to rip the leash that holds my focus
but the fact remains the same,
I'm still bound by chains
It doesn't matter if your chain is 10 ft or 100 ft
The fact remains the same, you're still bound by chains
Some people say I've changed, and it's harder to relate to me
Good, I never liked you
our friendship was make believe
I'm peeling the mask back and revealing the rap that's been
Feeling my organs drilling short distorted portions of morbid acid keeps the torture unfortunately crafted interests to orbit my portrait and inflict my image with disorder The minutes get shorter,
the walls start to close in Feels like the brain is hanging on by one clothes pin I've hidden in the darkness for too long I make it look all right but on the inside it's all wrong
I want life to change but I don't know if it can
for a man or machine or whatever the f*ck I am

I stand alone burned every bridge over the troubled water No longer hiding from my personality disorder You want to die in my life? then come and stay in madness' favorite little corner
Cause even shadows have shadows
and my secrets are eating me eagerly feeding

I scream in my dreams away but they keep on defeating me

Even Shadows have Shadows Welcome to the dusty subconscious of an actor Who murdered his childhood to stop the audience's laughter
Even Shadows have Shadows How am I to break free from my fears
When I don't like what I see and I can't feel what I hear
Even Shadows have Shadows So don't judge my book by it's cover
Cause my story's just f*cked up as any other.

That's my favourite lyric..

It's a lonely, lovely road, every step nearer your grave
Every mile farther from home, another year, another place
A traveler lives a thousand lives, can't take them with him anyway
Got too much to see, too many memories to take

Cause I'm diggin' my own grave
And I'm diggin' my own grave

Raised by gangstas and gamblers, hustlers, con artists
And convicts, killers and dons
Drug dealers, playas and pimps, smooth talkers
Stick up kids, thugs, real niggas and gods
Haunted by every soul that lay dead in the turf
Close by every spirit, that never made it to birth
Since the Moon separated from Earth
That's why they say I'm the greatest that ever orchestrated a verse

Heaven coming down by the tea party

With nothing to do you'd waste away
Obscure in exile
They've witnessed the times
You've gone astray
Whose fault? now you're thinking...

Theres's nothing to prove
A message from the crowd
To the shore...

And it feels now
Just like heaven's coming down
Your soul shakes free
As its conscience hits the ground

So strange are the ways,
They all have changed
Still life it stays the same
A break from the past
Could make it last
Maybe just a little longer

There's nothing to prove
A message from the crowd
To the shore...

You surrender
Love under will
Rest assured you're adored

And it feels now
Just lie heaven's coming down
Your soul shakes free
As its conscience hits the ground
These signs, this fate
Takes a path you didn't choose
Stay Strong, Keep Faith
There is a change that's
Coming through
Hold on my love
Hold on...

The lyrics to Big Iron (Marty Robins) are top notch. Not complicated, but they portray a story, which i like in songs.

There's always lines that grab me though.

"Before we find world peace, we've got to find peace to the war on the streets" - Tupac (Ghetto Gospel, IIRC).

Johnny Cash's rendition of Hurt grabs me my the feels every time i hear it, as does Willie Nelson's Always on my Mind. Elvis - If i Can Dream, too. Saw a vid of him singing it live and the emotion was overpowering.

"If I can dream of a better land
Where all my brothers walk hand in hand
Tell me why, oh why, oh why can't my dream come true"

There's more but i can't think of them right now...

Some of my favourite lyrics come from Ariana Grande and Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift: Blank Space

Nice to meet you, where you been?

I could show you incredible things

and later on

Got a long list of ex-lovers

They'll tell you I'm insane

Taylor Swift: New Romantics

We're so young but we're on the road to ruin
We play dumb but we know exactly what we're doing
We cry tears of mascara in the bathroom
Honey, life is just a classroom
Heartbreak is the national anthem
We sing it proudly
The best people in life are free
Ariana Grande: One Last Time
So one last time
I need to be, the one, who takes you home
Tove Lo: Habits (Stay High)
You've gone and I got to stay high
All the time, too keep you off my mind (ooh ooh)
Avicii: The Nights
When you get older
Your wild heart will live for younger days
Think of me if ever you're afraid

Tears For Fears - Mad World. All of the song. Pure perfection.

Sheds light on the time period in which this piece was written. The second stanza speaks the loudest, IMO.

'21st Century Schizoid Man' by King Crimson, written by Peter Sinfield.

"Cat's foot, iron claw

Neuro-surgeons scream for more
At paranoia's poison door
21st century schizoid man
Blood rack, barbed wire
Politician's funeral pyre
Innocence raped with napalm fire
21st century schizoid man
Dead sea, blind man's greed
Poet's starving, children bleed
Nothing he's got, he really needs
21st century schizoid man"

These are mostly from The Wonder Years.

"I came out swingin' from a,
South Philly basement,
caked in stale beer and sweat,

under half-lit fluorescent's and I,
spent the winter writing songs about getting better,
and if I'm being honest,
I'm getting there!" - Came out swinging - The Wonder Years

"I'm not a self help book,
I'm just a f*cked up kid,
I had to take my own advice and I did,
and I'm waiting for it to sink, in
expect me standing tall,
back against the wall,
cause what I learned was,
It's not about forcing happiness,
It's about, not letting sadness win" - Local man ruins everything - The Wonder Years

"Jesus Christ, I'm 26
All the people I graduated with,
All have Kids, all have Wives,
All have people who care if they come home at night,
well Jesus Christ, did I f*ck up?" - Passing Through a Screen Door - The Wonder Years

And literally everything about this song.

hope springs to life
charmed by approaching listlessness
hands reaching out
to grasp the open emptiness

leading me down...

and this goodbye
faced with hope and countenance
souls slip away
to bask in glowing radiance

leading me down...

as we run from the sun
and we harbour the lies
and we leave things undone
as we cover our eyes

does it tear you apart my love
does it tear you apart my love
it tears me apart

charmed by this light
this sombre guidance in her eyes
rage would entice
and final moments would arise

leading me down...

does it tear you apart my love
does it tear you apart my love
it tears me apart
