These lines from Nirvana's Very Ape remind me of the way people from outside of the USA seem to view the "typical American" haha:

"......
I take pride as the king of illiterature
I'm very ape and very nice

If you ever need anything please don't
Hesitate to ask someone else first
I'm too busy acting like I'm not naive
I've seen it all, I was here first
......"

Such a cool song.

I don't really have favourite songs or favourite lyrics to be honest but there are a couple which really stick out at me:

1. James - Sit Down.

Now I'm relieved to hear
That you've been to some far out places
It's hard to carry on
When you feel all alone

Resonates with me as my family has a history of depression and general mental illness. Almost all of the people in my family have suffered from depression and/or breakdowns. A couple of mates have also had experience with suicide attempts so this song is pretty poignant for me, especially the bit which I've quoted and italicised. To me it is something to live by: share your problems with friends and always endeavour to help them out with their problems too because it's never nice to be alone.

For the record my own mental state is fine guys it just seems to be a thing in my family so maybe I'll hit a wall when I get older aha.

2. New Atlantic - I Know

I listen to this song whenever I'm on a fat comedown, and it always cheers me up no end. If there are any mates around me we always end up singing it at eachother in high-pitched squeals trying to imitate the song. It's a great way to alleviate stress or mental pain, or just to get lost in the moment.

3. The Who - Baba O'Riley

Sally, take my hand
We'll travel south cross land
Put out the fire
And don't look past my shoulder

The whole song is great but I picked out that because it's one of my favourite late-night driving songs. I drove up to Manchester a few months ago by night and this song, along with Free Fallin' by Tom Petty and basically the entire discography of the Happy Mondays and Bob Marley, was on for much of the way. I think that the marriage of the huge intro with the great lyrics and the style of singing is something that only a couple of other songs have done to the same degree of awesomeness. In fact I think only I Am The Resurrection by The Stone Roses and Bat out of Hell by Meat Loaf immediately spring to mind as equal to this song in the wholesomeness of the blend of musical ingredients.

"I'm eighteen
and I don't know what I want
Eighteen
I just don't know what I want
Eighteen
I gotta get away
I've gotta get out of this place
I'll go runnin in outer space
Oh yeah"

From I'm Eighteen by Alice Cooper.

QUOTE
I've been traveling the land from gravel into sand
Not knowin where I'm going never havin any plans
Anything I wanted had to grab it in advance
Abracadabra there's a rabbit in my hands cause
I've got the magic stick bust the baddest tricks
Fished for a whale brought a ship up out of it
Whats that I just saw? A platypus? Naw.
Maybe its a rat crawling flat on his paws
Or a baby dragon just dragon his claws

The Moon by Flobots.

I like articulated rap, that actually tells a story. None of this Lil B, Tyler the creator bullsh*t (in my opinion, of course). Just a preference.

QUOTE
Soon come you will understand
The motivation of a man getting the under hand
A local yokel on a mission to get global
Lettin my vocals amass to some total
And keep the point focal, you hear me but you don't listen
You think its easy being put in this position
I freak speech, but still don't wanna preach
Ts peak thought in stimulate movement at at Emcees
Grab your gat hit the streets, that the rally cry the war horn
The Akoben, some cats is spiritually war torn--environment
So I leading a community movement
And I don't need money for me to make a community improvement
Tell me what you stand for
Would you settle for less or do you have the strength to demand more
Only time will tell, what this New World brings
Revolutions at order, check the Mood Swing, swing
Swing, swing, swing, swing, swing, swing, swing

Asheru featuring Talib Kweli.

I like the beat, but it just feels like there's atmosphere within the track, and the lyrics aren't repetitive, apart from the swing, swing lines. It all works together beautifully with the saxophone and piano.

QUOTE
Broken glass everywhere
People pissing on the stairs, you know they just don't care
I can't take the smell, I can't take the noise
Got no money to move out, I guess I got no choice
Rats in the front room, roaches in the back
Junkies in the alley with the baseball bat
I tried to get away, but I couldn't get far
Cause a man with a tow-truck repossessed my car

Grandmaster Flash, The Message.

This is brilliant. It always sets a wonderful scene in my head, and Grandmaster Flash hasn't fallen off in my opinion.

Staring at the wall,
I never thought this would be so hard.
How could have I been so close and never known you?
I never knew, I never knew you at all!

You will always be my father but I hope you know,
It's your fault and I'll never know what that means.
You left a void that never could be replaced.
I am dying inside but you will never see!

I always had hoped that you did not want it this way,
But no matter how hard I try you always pushed away.

These streets are crowded with cowards disguised as men.
They are paying no consequence for their actions,
So we'll all give in.

I say the same things
Over and over and over again,
But you act like you've never heard them.
We were created to set an example.
So what is this, what is this?

This is the same old story,
This is the same old scene.
We're living our lives right out of a magazine,
I guess we'll never know!

Have we gone from little to less,
To nothing at all, nothing at all?
It seems like every soul
Has been sold for a dollar or less.
So I guess we'll never know
How good it could have been.
How good it could have been!

Savor every breath
That enters your lungs,
I promise it won't last forever.
And by the time you realize
You were wrong, you'll be far gone.

Savor every breath
That enters your lungs,
I promise it won't last forever.
And by the time you realize
You were wrong, you'll be far gone!

Follow me or back out now.
Follow me with all your heart
Or back out, back out now!

We all swim in a sea of pride,
Where character is rare.
(Where character is rare)
With every passing day,
It only gets worse
And no one seems to care.

We all die wondering what if I-
What if I would have tried?
And while you're begging for life on you knees,
You'll realize you were never happy!

Have we gone from little to less,
To nothing at all, nothing at all?
It seems like every soul
Has been sold for a dollar or less.
I guess we'll never know
How good it could have been.

The clouds begin to move in rhythm,
There is a storm in the sky.

I will cause a disaster,
Create an earthquake
And watch as you shake.
I will cause a disaster,
Watch as you shake!

We all die wondering what if I-
What if I would have tried?
What if I would have tried?

I guess we'll never know!

It seems like every soul
Has been sold for a dollar or less.
I guess we'll never know

Future Tense by Sanctuary

What do you see on the news when you watch TV
War in the name of God, or a playground killing spree
Politicians promise you the world and a preacher cries
All he ever wanted was your money and a bitch on the side
What went wrong? Did society twist him?

As the snow flies
On a cold and gray Chicago mornin'
A poor little baby child is born
In the ghetto

And his mama cries
Cause if there's one thing that she don't need
It's another hungry mouth to feed
In the ghetto

People, don't you understand
The child needs a helping hand
Or he'll grow to be an angry young man some day
Take a look at you and me,
Are we too blind to see,
Do we simply turn our heads

And look the other way
Well the world turns
And a hungry little boy with a runny nose
Plays in the street as the cold wind blows
In the ghetto

And his hunger burns
So he starts to roam the streets at night
And he learns how to steal
And he learns how to fight
In the ghetto

Then one night in desperation
A young man breaks away
He buys a gun, steals a car,
Tries to run, but he don't get far
And his mama cries
As a crowd gathers 'round an angry young man
Face down on the street with a gun in his hand
In the ghetto

As her young man dies,
On a cold and gray Chicago mornin',
Another little baby child is born
In the ghetto
And his mama cries

In The Ghetto by Elvis Presley.
