Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment is finally bringing Mortal Kombat back to gaming consoles after acquiring the rights from its now defunct publisher.

Calling it the "the most brutal installment of the landmark fighting game to date for release on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360," the game won't release until 2011. Simply titled Mortal Kombat, the game is being developed by the newly re-named NetherRealm Studios, led by Mortal Kombat creator and creative director Ed Boon.

I hope Drahmin and Meat return. They were by far my favourite characters in Armageddon.
This does look very good, and I hope it includes some of the more offbeat finishing moves they had years ago. Weren't there fatalities that turned the oppoenent into an animal or a baby, or something like that?
I think it would be good to bring some humour back, this game shouldn't take itself too seriously.

Uh, reminds me of how we romanian played on internet when we didn't have a PC on that time or playing on other people homes. What memories. inlove.gif
I see there and there, some things of the old Mortal Kombat games, backgrounds and other stuff. I see the characters very good made, some blur a little and now is moving camera. Great made till now from the trailer from my part of view; sad is not for PC version too. dozingoff.gif

This looks pretty sweet. I loved all the previous Mortal Kombat games, excluding Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe, of course.

I cant see how that is 2D, characters are still fully 3D. I love MK, always preferred it to street fighter when growing up (owned 1 & 2 for the SNES) but I wish they would go back to the actor captures they used originally, obviously this would look better now given technology available but it could still maintain the unique look and feel it had when it first came out.

I'm disappointed that it's another MK not coming to PC. I'll just keep playing MK4.

when I say 2d, I meant in the sense that the fighting mechanics will have a 2d feel. Of course the characters are rendered in 3D.

Sorry I wasn’t having a dig at you, just something I wish they would move away from (the 3D characters) and revert to the style used in the first 3 games.

My problem with this game is locked in 2d movement would be absolutely infuriating at times I would imagine. In an age like today paying $60 for a 2d experience would be, meh. $15-40 would be acceptable depending on quality and this is coming from a big MK fan.

Graphics don't define the game. Even if the game was entirely in 2D it wouldn't matter if the gameplay is good. And it's not 2D anyway. It's 3D. But it's a fighting game. What do you expect, a huge landscape? It's not a free roaming game. Get your sh*t together.

im not talking 2d graphics but 2d movement is way to old school at this point to cost $60 for me personally.

I know, i was just explaining the 2d part alittle bit more than I did in the starting post.

I just notice that kira and li mei are chained up in shao kahn's courtyard during the kung lao and sub zero fight. looks like we will get cameos in this game.

You're saying MK4 wasn't good? tounge.gif
I never liked moving sideways but rest of the game was awesome.

I never played 4 but I just didn’t like the move to 3D rendered characters. As I say I just think how the first 3 were done made the game unique and very memorable. Just seems 3D is being used now because that’s what every other fighting game has conformed to.

I think this might just be the best MK since II. Went downhill after that one IMO.

You haven't played the new Street Fighter, have you?

I feel like WB is riding the coattails of Capcom with the whole 3d-2d like Midway did with the original. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the first two MK's, and have nostalgia playing it at the arcade and on my GAMEGEAR, and this game looks p good, but still.

I enjoyed the MK vs DC Universe game and this trailer looks very good to me, so I should probably get this title as-well!

yes i have and it also cost $40 brand new so somebody in the marketing department must feel the same way i do about 2d movement not justifying a $60 price tag.

^it only costs $40 because that was the "super" version of 4, the original was $60.

here's a shot of the E3 booth. looks like they are showing a fatality move.

After a long wait, I got in to see the first screening on the day of the new Mortal Kombat. While the demo wasn’t playable by us, it was presented by three of the developers, who played it for us.

I took pictures with my camera, higher quality shots will be posted when we have them.

The first thing we saw was the select screen.

The characters shown were Scorpion, Mileena, Reptile, Subzero, Kung Lao, Johnny Cage, Nightwolf and Sektor.

The two guys with controllers selected Scorpion and Sub Zero and began the fight.

We’re told that they’re all fans of the old Mortal Kombat games, so this new one is going to be done very much like the old ones, on a 2D plane (but with 3D graphics – like Street Fighter 4).

True to form, the combat looks a lot faster and more fluid, like the older games. Even the levels they showed us, the living forest, the pit and Shao Khans throne (complete with Sonia Blade in chains) are based off the originals, with a new coat of paint.

Blood and combat damage appears on characters as they take a beating, and remains round-to-round until the end of the match. Yeah, I know, this was done before – but it’s looking really good, really gory here. Not the crayon-like effects seen in previous games.

After seeing how well they did Meat in Armageddon, I really hope he returns. Great character.
But not as cool as this guy:
