An eight-year-old Dutch child was reportedly the only survivor of a plane crash at Tripoli airport in Libya in which more than 100 people were killed.

There was no immediate indication of the cause of the crash, which occurred at about 6am on Wednesday (4pm, NZT) as the Afriqiyah Airways plane was landing after a flight from Johannesburg.

At least 93 passengers were on board the Airbus 330. They are believed to be of various nationalities, including British and South African. The 11 crew were all thought to be Libyan nationals, the BBC said.

While it may seem grim now, this will in fact be an awesome story to tell in five years for the eight year old.

I suppose "oops" is right.

At least he survived, but still that is very sad. Nobody plans to go out that way. I wonder what happened.

I can only assume some of his family died.

Lately I've had this in my mind. I'm always really serious during take off and landing even though I wasn't like that before. Something has got into me lately that makes me nearly sh*t in my pants if the plane starts shaking a little after take off.

And yeah, his family is most likely dead so that must suck, loads.

I'm not afraid to go on an airplane. And if it crashes/gets f*cked up I just 'hope' that it just goes all fast.

Anyways: pretty damn brutal for that little kid. Gronf's logic is rather f*cked up though... some messed up sh*t that 8 year old has to deal with.

If you don't die on the way to the airport, why should you die on the flight? The two probabilities are exactly the same.

I used to scare the sh*t out of my family with all of my tales of ACI in the departure lounge until someone told me to shut the f*ck up...

He could have been one of those kids who flits between countries on their own after a complicated divorce. If you look on the bright side his family are all alive and well in Libya or South Africa wherever.

But yeah, that has to f*ck you up in more ways than one...

Really? I'm sure there are more cars out there that can kill you than planes crashing.

I'm pretty sure that's a misconception.

Many people say, "You're less likely to get into a plane crash than a car crash on the way to the airport." Even if this is true, many people survive car crashes; this is not the same with plane crashes.

On Topic: I feel bad for this kid. Considering he was Dutch, I doubt he was traveling through Africa without his parents. sad.gif

Damn, I feel bad for the kid, so young and already gone through a very traumatic experience. If some of his family was on the flight then it's terrible, hopefully nerner is right and he's going through that situation, although I doubt it. Now I'm just gonna sit back and wait for 4Chan to get a hold of this story...

So many? Plane Crashes are alot more spectacular to tell on TV then car crashes. Car crashes happen every and in almost every country.

There are alot more cars driving around then planes flying I guess and on top of that, there are alot more car crashes and car accidents than plane crashes/accidents. You just hear about them more because they are more spectacular. And how many planes crash from the X number of flights that happen every day, week, month or even year?

Put it all into perspective people.

What is it with Libyans and planes?

At least they destroyed the plane over their own soil this time.

Well there's a lot of planes crashes recently than comparing, like example, in the last few decades, so yes it's more news worthy since it's not normal that it happens frequently.

Besides, a single plane crash has a much more casualties than a single car crash. It gives the travelers more doubt about taking a flight than before. And the media often mentions the alcohol consumption as the main cause for the car crashes, so it's importance is often ignored.

Anyways, this is a tragic event for Libya and his people and I hope they can overcome of this misery. icon14.gif

It's incredible how that eight-year-old boy survived. I never thought it would be possible to survive a plane crash like that (especially considering everyone else died).
