It looks totally devoid of character.

That's because it's a game engine tech demo, not the actual game..

How can you fit so much data on a CD ?

The trick is: we are not storing any star-system or planetary data at all! What we are storing are algorithms and code to generate this data in real-time, as requested by the game server. This is similar to what 64k demo coders do, and this technique is called procedural programming.

That's some smart programming.

Oh well, the hype went down rather fast when I read this

*snip*

I understand it's hard to make, but I was really hoping the technology was on that level. I guess we're just not there yet.

I'll say, I all of a sudden don't give two sh*ts now.

I read more about it and it's not like other MMOs, once someone finishes a mission, someone else can't do the same thing. The mission is gone. So only 1 person can find Earth.

The infinite star system is an amazing thing, but even if they add some sort of character to this...I mean really?

Think of it this way, unless we get billions of people playing this, you will more than likely never see another actual human player. And even if everyone on the damn planet did play this, not only would it beat out WoW, but it would be something that has never happened besides all of us breathing air and drinking water. They can put all the NPC characters they want, but people don't play MMO games for all NPC. The only way it would work on such a scale like that is maybe if you played with your friends and could port right to them.

Or am I the only one that has had this come across my mind?

It shows off the procedural terrain.

It's been 4 years in development and very little updates. Feels more like some bedroom programmers doing this on their spare time. Which in no way is a bad thing, just sort of makes me lose hope.

It IS pretty much that, with one exception. A dev from Epic.
Can't expect speed from 8 people trying to make a game on this scale.

Hopefully, when this comes out there'll be tons of ship customization because I don't really like that thingy... Though it isn't bad...

Also, I guess there'll be some kind of hyperspace beacon-thingy that tells you which stars have settlements and where are the main hubs of players...

Just imagine a wow-scale raid, only just bombing down some city or attacking a space station... This has loads of potentiall... shame it's so few people working on it...

I somehow missed that video. I kept checking their website and nothing showed up. Bastards didn't even put it up there! Nothing new about the video, though.

From a game design point of view its pretty damn empty. Can you imagine populating 200 billion planets with missions and interesting areas.

Moreover, I've played the combat prototype, its sub-par.

Play EvE?

I have tried EVE, and based on what I've read, the two will be much different.

Ah well, the dev said he doubts it would even be in beta by 2012.

IMO the ultimate space sim would be EvE + Infinity procedural engine. I like the ambition CCP has. They're going to have walking in space stations this summer and sometime they will have really really diverse ship customization. But they're also going to do Dust 514, a console shooter where the players fight in the wars of the EvE Online alliances. And since the wars will be fought on the planets that the alliances have (partially) taken over in EvE, that kind of eliminates the whole exploring the surface of a planet thing that I really would have wanted to see.

I very much understand the differences in ambition. I've been following infinity for close to 4 years now, and have been playing EvE for almost 3 now.

Thats not my point.

This is my point:

My eve comment was simply because its the game you should play if you are looking for a space MMO.

The universe in EvE is already pretty damn big, and it poses some problems when playing, but with Infinity, with so many planets, short of having a couple of billions of players, will remove player interaction for the most part.

Anyway, I dont expect this to be released. Ever. They are ambitious, but progress is abysmally low, and the only thing they have really worked on is planets.

They should really focus on making a game out of it as well. Though I guess Exploration on it's own could be the game.

From what I've read years ago on their forums, it seems that it's more like EVE, save the ship handling.

Like I said before, they will be launching a Kickstarter campaign to fund the development of the game.

I don't particularly like multiplayer games (especially not MMOs) but this one sounds really exciting.
