You've got 4GB hardware reseverd. That suggests to me you have an onboard GPU which is monopolising it.

Never mind, thanks for the help though guys. I believe it was a setting that I had accidentally ticked under msconfig > boot > advanced options. I had "Maximum Memory" ticked, and it had 2048 in the text box. Unticked it, placed all of my RAM in the slots, and boom! I now have it running just fine.

Build an Onion Pi. Or, as we did at work, a robotic beckoning Onion Pi maneki-neko with glowing red eyes.

Not exactly what I had in mind, but that's a nice project for Pi.

Why the f*ck is my Google Chrome eventually consuming 3.2GB of RAM these days? Nothing in my extensions or viewing content even comes close to justifying that amount of use. Seriously hope it's just a memory leak waiting to be fixed.

I'm almost tempted to switch back to Firefox after 7 years of Chrome due to constant degradation of its performance with every passing update.

There was a memory leak in the mobile version. Wouldn't be surprised if it had found its way onto desktop now.

Any Chromium-based browser will chew up a lot of memory after a while. It's just how Chromium is designed to use resources and one of the reasons it's a fast engine. It bugs me from time to time, too.

It's not a memory leak, that's how chrome works. It fires up a new instance for a app/plugin you have installed, also a instance for a new tab.

That way if one of those instances crash, the browser can keep the other stuff running. if you're low on ram just go minimal if you want to use chrome.

If you do shift+esc on chrome, you can see the stuff it has running.

AFAIK each new tab is treated as a separate thread. I'm aware that it's always going to make use of more RAM than browsers that don't effectively run a new instance for every tab you have open, but 3.2gb RAM occupied by Chrome suggests something more fundamentally wrong unless you've either got 100 tabs open, or have weighed it down with every plugin known to man.

Well tbh chrome doesn't seem to care how much ram it saves for itself, so it might be "normal" depending on whatever OverTheBelow is doing.

I usually use two extensions running (on this laptop), a tab for gtaf and one for music on youtube, that totals 475440k +- (chrome+gpu+tab+youtube)

Opening another 4 youtube tabs, twitter, facebook, gmail and an extra tabs to browse the ut forums fires it up to 1gb being used. I've seen users with 20+ tabs so it's not unusual for that amount of ram to being used.

If you're using it just for browsing you can force it to run on a single thread, I also have chrome caching stuff to a separate hdd.

Even though there's no issues with loading things, now that I've discovered it's eating up 1.64GB of RAM even though I have 8GB of the stuff bugs me alot. 630MB for one page of a thread compared to Youtube using HTML 5 to view HD video? Yeesh..
