Intro To Topic
Hello, and welcome to GTA Network Support. You are either looking for help with something related to the network (the forums, one of the GTA fansites, etc), or maybe you are new to the Network and need to know about more. Well this topic is for both groups; hopefully you'll find what you are looking for here. With the Directory covering specific areas that are usually discussed here and allot more, this topic is here to help you, so please take a while in reading it before posting in this forum.
About The Forum
So what is this forum about exactly? Well in case the title of it didn't give it away, this is the place for any related questions to do with GTANET, including these forums, IRC and much more. However it needs to be iterated that GTANET is not an official company run by Rockstar Games, it's fan based and un-officially run. So please avoid such questions, assumptions and errors:

•GTANET is not official, nor run by Rockstar Games

•GTANET consists only of the sites linked here.

•GTANET is not associated with any SAMP issues, other than those
related to the GTANET Server, which should be discussed here.

•Bugs related to GTA games shouldn't be discussed here,
but in the relative forums for the respective games.

•Not for general troubleshooting and questions, they go here.

•Make sure to use search before posting a new topic.

•Related talk to anuj's grandtheftautowiki goes here.
The Rules
Before you do anything on these forums, you must read it's rules and policy. Here are the basic rules in a easy to read list format:

No pornography (linking to or directly posting any media containing nudity or sex)
No warez/piracy (linking to, requesting or discussion of illegally obtaining copyrighted material)
No advertising (a link in your sig is fine, but posting a topic about your site or PM'ing members with links to your site is not). Referral links of any nature also fall under this category.
No flaming (Antagonistic, slanderous, racist, or sexist comments will not be tolerated)
No 'ripping' (stealing other people's work and claiming it as your own; be it sig images or game mods)
There is an edit button to stop double and triple posts, so please use it.
Signatures must be of a reasonable size (click here for guidelines and details)
No impersonating forum staff, other members, or Rockstar employees. In other words, no making fake accounts with other people's names.
Never open multiple accounts, unless you have a legit reason. Members found using multiple accounts to abuse the forums will be taken care of appropriately.

You must abide by these, if you don't expect your visit here to be a short one. If you plan to stay here and also use GTANET's related sites, then you must abide by these terms. Please visit the source topic to see an in-depth explanation of the rules: Link. Remember, knowledge is power.

What's A Pinned Topic?
In short, a pinned topic is a topic that is stuck to the top of pages of certain areas of the forums. For instance, go into the the GTA IV Section and you will see a bunch of topics at the top and above the latest topics posted in. Pinned topics never move from the top of the Forum front pages, and stay there. A topic gets pinned if it's informative, outstanding or/and benefits the area that it has been posted in. Only Staff can pin a topic however. Here is the pinned topics (as of 7th Oct 09) in the GTA Chinatown Wars section of these boards. Conveniently this supplied example has the pinned highlighted with a red border, and also the logo to the left of the topic is also circled, as it is different to the regular logos, to help differentiate the topics:

Enlarged Version
Pinned List (For This Forum)
Sig Re-Enable Request Thread: There are size limits on signatures dimension wise, and sometimes users don't abide by this and do so anyway. Eventually you're signature will be disabled and you will not be able to have the privileges to have one until you correct the error. Once that is done, you post in this highlighted topic to get it re-enabled.

PM Spammer List: The PM system is a great way of communicating privately with fellow forumers. However some users take this freedom for granted and decide to use it to harass fellow forumers, advertise and allot more besides. If you feel that someone has PM'd you and it goes against the actual intention and usage of the PM system you can post here about the PM and who PM'ed it so the staff can then take action.

All Your BBcode Needs: BBcode is the standard code that members are allowed to use within their posts and PMs. The code is used to create links, add images and even embed YouTube videos. Being 'code' of course, you need to start somewhere and learn how to use it. Even though GTAF helps with the proportion of BBcode functions above the reply box, you may find that you need a tutorial of all the coding possibilities and what each tag does. This topic does that.

GTAForums.com Dictionary: Being the internet you will undoubtedly come across acronyms and phrases that have you have never heard before. Some are even are specific to GTAF and GTANET as whole. Staff member Dutchy3010 has kindly put together a categorized and alphabetized dictionary with all words, acronyms and phrases that you should understand in order to communicate on these forums. Although not necessary to know, this is the place to look if you read a post and don't understand a specific internet/gaming term.

Posting
Remember, when posting, you must not 'spam' or include material or conversation that goes against the forum's rules and policy. Remember to put effort into your posts, a post with just one-two words or a smiley emoticon is not tolerated, and you will usually be told this personally by a member of staff in your 'Member Log'. To post in a topic, look for a button near the top or the bottom of the page that says 'Add Reply', then click it and a page with a white box will appear; in this box you type your reply, then you can either preview what it looks like or just go ahead and post it straight away. In addition to this, there is a 60 second time limit between each post. Please also take into consideration that you can not double post.

Additionally there is fast reply at the bottom of the page, it's the same as a normal reply except it doesn't have the BBcode function panel. The advantage is that you can type out your reply between the 60second 'water shed' and then post it when it's over. Also, you might want a poll in your topic, you need to ask a member of staff to do this. Or you can make a new topic with a poll, by clicking 'Add New Poll' above most pages; make sure you post in the right section however (this goes for all topics and posts; to add a new topic click Add Topic via the same method/way you click 'Add Reply'). Finally, there are two functions called Quote and Edit. These buttons are contained within a post area. 'Quote' allows you to put another persons post within yours to let them know you are talking to them or replying to the post. The Edit button basically lets you edit any of your previous posts.

Here are some common asked questions and problems in this forum:

Why are there lots of double posts?
What are '.moo' links?
Extra Information About Edited Posts.....
Posting An Image:
Signature/Avi
Other than your username, your Avatar and Signature set you apart and identifiable from other members. An avatar is a small 64x64 image below your username. In a sense it represents a 'face' for your posting, but it can be a picture of anything within the GTAF rules. If you have an image above 64x64, then GTAF will size it down. Additionally there is no file size limit, but if you have an image that is say for instance '1MB' large, the staff will take it down and warn you not to it again. Please take file size into consideration.

Now onto signatures. Signatures should be within 500x150pxl or your signature will get disabled (as explained earlier). Beyond the size limit, if you put in images that are over 800kb it will not be put into your signature. A signature is usually used to link to other things and to advertise. But it can used just to decorate your posts and make you as member stand out. One method users have used is when making a topic, to link and advertise it within their signature.

Here are some common asked questions and problems in this forum:

Signature Re-Enable Request Thread
Upload A Custom Avatar
Custom Signature?
Signature Alignment & Tables.....
BBCode
As already stated BBcode allows you to jazz up posts with things like images, videos and even custom text. As you can see this post uses tables, links and more. Using the BBcode topic as previously highlighted will help you achieve such effects. BBcode is used on most forums, and it was was designed to be easy to use and powerful. BBcode can not only be used in posts, but also signatures and PMs. BBcode has allowed topics like the 'Funny Picture Topic' to spring up. Without BBcode, many topics and functions would not exists.

Here are some common asked questions and problems in this forum:

Why Was BBcode Originally Disabled?

Bugs
Being that this is a forum, on the internet - somehow somewhere, there may be a glitch/bug/error. The main proportion of errors can be caused by browser functionality and updates. Sometimes it will be a piece of software on your computer like an Anti-Virus program causing the problem. Many people even have log in problems. Simply put: try different browsers, delete browser caches, and edit you security settings to allow GTAForums to be viewed - if you come across these things respectively. Here are some additional topics, that might help you..........

Staff
Who are the Staff? These are members who are known as 'Moderators' and 'Administrators'. Some of them help run the site and some them help reinforce the rules. The staff have the power to warn you and ban you. If you are out of line with a member of staff or just in general, they will probably not take to it kindly. Besides the usual staff tasks you will see them do, you can also see all the notes they have given you (warnings, temp bans, etc) in your Member Log. Usually when browsing the forums you may see lists of members viewing certain areas. Administrators are highlighted in yellow, and moderators are highlighted in blue in these lists. In addition to this, there are 'Forum Moderators' who moderate specific areas of the site. They have less privileges than normal moderators, but there words should be advised, and they can however lock topics. To see the list of the staff team look here.

Here are the badges the staff wear:

IRC
In IRC like MSN? If you don't know what that is, then here is some further explanation. An IRC allows you to talk to your friends and fellow forumers. GTANET has it's own IRC server, meaning you can run your own IRCs and channels (chat rooms). This is especially good for teams creating game modifications and clans that operate on GTAF and wish to talk. There are some rules to the IRC system however. The GTAF rules apply, and you can't type in caps either (in the main IRC Channels, located here) . The main IRC chat, if you wish to see it, is here. This IRC server has staff watching over it, so be careful what you say and do. The other service available which allows you to make your own IRC channel on the GTANET server is here.

Also here is some gobbledygook translated for you by Edmachine:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

•Regular user - no mode - nothing before his/her name - no advantages over other users.
•Voice - +v - + - is able to talk when the channel he/she is using is under +m mode (+m - Moderated).
•Half operator - +h - % - see operator (but can't manage the VOP list).
•Operator - +o - @ - is able to kick and ban users as well as change the topic of the channel (if the channel isn't in +t mode, anyone can) and can probably manage the VOP list (auto-voice list for the channel) and the HOP list (auto-half-operator list) and can manage channel modes/settings.
•Super operator - +a - & - same powers as Operator but can also manage the AOP list (auto-operator list).
•Owner - +q - ~ - is the owner of the channel. Can DROP it (un-register it), manage VOP, •HOP, AOP and SOP (auto-super-op) lists and more.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Note, that some IRC clients (ChatZilla, for example) colours the users depending on their level.

If you have any suggestions or any questions to include in a possible future FAQ in this topic, then please fire away.

Once again thanks for the positive replies smile.gif .
I will note again , that if you have any ideas for questions to go in a 'General FAQ' section then please do tell me. As I am led to believe that there are members more active here than others and also help aground a lot. So you will undoubtedly know what is asked often here. I want to include a FAQ with such questions to save users the time posting and waiting for a response. Although I've already covered this slightly in the Troubleshooting Section with links to related topics, I still think it would be good for the area to have a FAQ.

So if you have any ideas/question, then please, do tell...... icon14.gif

The information in IRC has a lot of errors, but I take it you aren't too involved in IRC, are you tounge.gif?

"Is IRC like MSN? If you don't know what that is, then here is some further explanation. (no "an", since IRC stands for Internet Relay Chat and you can't have an IRC) IRC allows you to talk to your friends and fellow forumers. GTANET has it's own IRC server, meaning you can run your own channels (chat rooms). This is especially good for teams creating game modifications and clans that operate on GTAF and wish to talk. There are some rules to the IRC system however. The GTAF rules apply, and you can't type in caps either (not really, since you can, but it usually annoys people. You could kick/ban people who do that, if you are in control of the channel). The main IRC chat, if you wish to see it, is here. This IRC server has staff watching over it, so be careful what you say and do. The other service available which allows you to make your own channel on the GTANET server is here."
Sorry, I edited it the way I proof-read The Multiplay Monitor tounge.gif. And it might have some mistakes too, since I might have mis-understood something you wrote.

Also, this might help some:
Regular user - no mode - nothing before his/her name - no advantages over other users.
Voice - +v - + - is able to talk when the channel he/she is using is under +m mode (+m - Moderated).
Half operator - +h - % - see operator (but can't manage the VOP list).
Operator - +o - @ - is able to kick and ban users as well as change the topic of the channel (if the channel isn't in +t mode, anyone can) and can probably manage the VOP list (auto-voice list for the channel) and the HOP list (auto-half-operator list) and can manage channel modes/settings.
Super operator - +a - & - same powers as Operator but can also manage the AOP list (auto-operator list).
Owner - +q - ~ - is the owner of the channel. Can DROP it (un-register it), manage VOP, HOP, AOP and SOP (auto-super-op) lists and more.
Note, that some IRC clients (ChatZilla, for example) colours the users depending on their level.

If anyone has questions about IRC, you can ask me.

Also, congratulations on the medal wink.gif.

Thanks for the info. I will add it in. About the IRC rules (CAPS and such) - on the main IRC, the one you go on here: http://www.gtanet.com/chat/, when I last went on there (when GTAF crashed) there were moderators (if I remember correctly, but it could've been bots) that kicked people for typing in CAPS/SPAM.

I've been thinking about a new section, maybe a walkthrough of the User Control Panel; a tutorial of most (if not all) areas so users know how to check their posts, and how to PM (etc). I might try to do it when I next have time........
