Almost a year ago, my brother and I were discussing the subject of Officer Frank Tenpenny. What did he do all the time we don't see him in the game? Well I was going to make a short 6 mission mod and release it by Christmas 2008. Well I decided to do justice and make it a bit bigger than all that.

It comes with the option to install manually or you can use the installer that backs up the files. This is the "JOE" distribution and will be followed by a "PRO" distribution in the months ahead. JOE is for the average Joe to install, plug and play. The next distro will not have the audio or the installer but will contain the original source code, updated main.scm, individual missions, and other documentation.

There are some minor bugs and anyone who cares to mod Tenpenny Stories can do so without my permission. I made it to educate and inspire others to create mods. So add more to it, correct mistakes (I am not perfect), but the game is playable from beginning to end.

Well heres how things working. I downloaded , installed , New Game started all is good . But when i go in to first mission the whole games crash. Any ideea?

What operating system?
Have you gone into the station and tried to save prior to the first mission?
Try walking around town a bit and see if it crashes every time.
Make certain all 4 files copied into their directory.

These are your backups.

The known bug I am working on is a random crash when entering the Atrium and LVPD. But it doesn't always occur so that one is hard to trace. No mission requires you to be there. Other than the save game I don't recall making any changes to the area.

I tried first without replacing audio\SFX\SCRIPT and it didnt crash
after entering red marker at LVPD a short cutscene was shown, cops talking(sounds from zero mission)
my tenpeny entered the copcar, then and I chased the copbike and pumped it at any time, then the mission was complete
Next mssion start was at LS Airport, worked only as I came in car. Followed the taxi and got mission fail.
Tried again to start but dont worked.

I tried with audio\SFX\SCRIPT and it crashed as I went into sphere at LVPD
Soundfilemodification are a weired thing. Can you upload the sounds as single wav files?
so we can install it with Alcis soundeditor

EDIT:
OK, They are now added as an optional download. My brother isn't at home and he is the one who did the sound mods but I just grabbed everything he had in the directory. Did you try decompiling the script using Alci's Sound Editor? That might work too.

BUG: Randomly crashing entering the Las Venturas Police Station.

BUG FIX: I missed loading and checking a Banshee model in the impound. To repair the file edit the following in Sanny Builder:

Search for this line:
CODE
0674: set_car_model #BANSHEE numberplate "_JOSHUA"


pop this in right above it:

Otherwise you will need to arrive in a Banshee at the station for the model to be available. This is why God invented beta testing...

This last one is a bit dark from "Gray Exports" but you do get the infra red goggles. The first few times I played it I got caught sneaking inside. So I went down the train tracks and came in through the side. But this is like the 5th or 6th mission into the game.

This seems to be a nice modification, but (like many people) I get audio-related crashes. With your original SCRIPT sfx archive, or one created with SAAT, I get a crash right at the start of the first mission, during the fade-in. (the exception address is in/around PlayMusic_0, the audio function). With the original archive from SA, I get a bit of a view, but when the camera is about to go to the floor, I get the exact same crash, in the exact same location.

I'm using a normal SA 1.0 EXE file, with no further major modifications installed. Too bad there are so many audio bugs... have been looking forward to the mod for a long time!

I plan to take it over to the neighbor's today and see what it does on his Vista machine.

I already tried the manual method, and yes, I'm using Vista. However, the same problem also occurs on my XP system with your audio files , ,both normal and manual, strangely. The original archive, however, works. Hope you two figure it out!

EDIT: sadly, got a crash upon exiting the 'crack den' interior in that mission 'Cleaning the Hood' (nice mission, by the way)... still, the 'damn you, berkley' text is pretty funny smile.gif

Ok for those of you having crashes on playing the first mission the simple fix is:

1. Download the Wav script file at the GTA garage. 16 MB

2. Get Alci GUI for SAAT.

3. Follow this tutorial.

As far as I know this is only an issue with Vista and not XP... or Linux. moto_whistle.gif Unless someone tells me otherwise. I was in charge of creating and compiling the sounds for this mod so I take the blame fully. Other bugs with the actual mission script will be corrected as they come in so hang on to that big download file. Many are up to 4 or 5 mission complete and as soon as we are certain all the bugs have been identified and fixed, my brother will compile a new scm and post the PRO version.

Okay, awesome mod so far. I downloaded the wav pack and imported them using SAAT. Buuuut, the crash returns when I went into the blip for the King of the hill mission. (on foot)

I will look into that, but be sure to save your progress at the station and try the mission again.

I just had another user tell me he was having trouble with "Path of the Snake" but his wasn't a real bug. I will explain it below in the spoiler.

The mission begins with a witness in one of three vans. You will start playing as Hernandez on a motorcycle following one of the 3 vans. He thought it loaded the wrong model. If your van has the witness then you will finish the mission out as Hernandez, however if it is a decoy you shift into Pulaski following the 2nd van. If his is also a decoy then Tenpenny has the real van and you follow it. The other thing he had trouble understanding was the "Ditch Car" timer bar. It is a simple timer and NOT a distance gauge. You can ride the bumper of the van you are following or be miles away (not a good idea) once the real van is identified you must stick to it like glue. The vans are not jackable the mission is long if you end up chasing the 3rd van. Vans are selected at random so this mission never plays the same way twice.

I hope that clears up any questions about the mission.

Ahh, so stupid crashes are normal then? Glad to know I wasn't being stupid tounge2.gif

I too had troubles with set_interior (along with many, many other opcodes) crashing the game upon use while making Vigilante Justice. Sometimes I could even have a wait that crashed the game. I still don't know how I fixed any of them... But after tonnes of meddling it just seems to "work" of it's own accord.

First let me say Thank you for giving us such detailed information.

Thanks a lot.

Next, this mod as you can tell was basically reproduced from the original with Ryder and CJ. I found out it is much easier just to make your own mission from scratch than it is to edit the ones that exist. There is actually very little left of the original script. But I will take a look now and see what the story is on it crashing.

Firstly, the audio archive crash also occurred on XP, though I still have to try the other SAAT method. Vista even crashes with the original audio archive, albeit a bit later. However, I had a random play_wav crash lately as well on my Vista system, even with corrct code.

The crash on select_interior is even stranger, since it occurs in a load_file system function... it may be another mod, but I don't have any map mods, vehicle mods, or any other object mods (except a fully working save pickup model change) or CLEO scripts enabled at the time.

EDIT: the other SAAT method worked now, and I have your audio.

I think I have found the bug for the crashing on interior 0, it may actually be the code above it. Removal of models that were inside the crack den. I cleaned it up by placing the removal of models (Op Code 0249) inside the cleanup procedure at the end of mission.

That is ultimate goal. There will be 2 final releases of this JOE and PRO. The JOE version will get updated with a new american.gxt, main.scm, and script.img The audio "SCRIPT" is an unknown as my brother is the audio man on this and neither of us understand why the SCRIPT audio would compile differently on the machines. I don't even pretend to understand SAAT.

The PRO version will contain the 319 audio files needed to install the mod. Also the raw unedited missions as I worked them out as individual scripts and the documented main.scm script. So as you can see this one will contain all the stuff you need to create you own missions (if you are into coding or want to learn).

So far, some are reporting no troubles running it on Xp others say it crashes on both Xp and Vista. I have it running on 3 machines here at the house.

1. XP SP3 (mine) which has minor crashes mainly when or if I don't save between missions.

2. XP SP2 an older Emachine in my dad's LAN room he said I can use for experimenting. The sound gargles but doesn't cause the game to crash. I put this off due to the poor quality of in monitor speakers and sound card.

3. Linux Kubuntu 8, Vincent's Linux box running WINE which is a silly acronym for WINE Is Not an Emulator. His doesn't crash but he doesn't hear any sound so this issue is cause by a conflict between WINE and his OS.

Vincent put it on the neighbor's PC a Dell running Vista (Dad is dead set against Vista) and yes it needed to have the Audio Fix installed. But runs with some minor crashes Vincent is trying to play it through at the neighbor's right now.

If you find and submit bugs I will be adding an ending credit sequence to this mod with you name under beta testing. If you submit a code fix for the bug I will include your name in the debuggers section above that. How your name will read is up to you. Such as Jabhacksoul or Joshua "JAB" Black etc..

@Jabhacksoul - You ask for my computer specs. Intel Core 2 Duo E8200 @ 2.6 GHz . Video Card nVidia 8600GT 512 RAM . 2 GB of RAM.

No, our sound pack doesn't alter bank_018 and according to my brother, that bank holds only 65 sounds. He says, it's the female routlett and wheel of fortune dialog.

Vincent (ToonSkull) wants to know if you decompiled the correct SCRIPT, in other words did you follow his tutorial prior to running the installation? And he would like you to do this:

1. If you installed the mod, uninstall this will revert to the original script.

2. Make a back up of your SCRIPT file.

3. Run the tutorial.

4. Reinstall the mod manually but not the SCRIPT.

Then contact us as to your results.

BTW Nothing to do with this mod but GTA SA. I have a Dual Core Processor as well. Did you set your affinity to use a single CPU? When I upgraded my system in Feb. I had to set do this or the mouse wouldn't work in the game and other general weirdness.
