Hey guys,

Since I got sick of dealing with 5 FPS on GTA IV, I decided to install GTA SA again. Unfortunately, My OS and GTASA seem to not like each other. The game loads all the beginning movies, but when it gets to the legal screen, it fades, then pops up with an unhandled exception error. Any work-arounds or fixes to this problem? Strangely enough, some guy running Windows 7 on a netbook got it running just fine.

My specs if you need them

Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit (build 7100 RC)
Asus A8S-X
AMD Athlon x2 3800+ (2.1 ghz)
3 GB RAM
Nvidia 8800 GT 512mb

There are reports of other people being able to run it on the exact same build that I have, which is the Release Candidate(7100).

Have you tried running the game in different compatibility modes, like Win 98 or Win XP SP2?

I haven't tried SA, but i've tried GTA 3 and Vice City on Windows 7 build 7260 and they worked perfectly, since all three games are using the same engine GTA San Andreas should run perfectly and is a lot newer. Just install DirectX (March 2009) and you can run the game on Windows 7. Also you can try the XP Compatibilty modus.

Okay, I'll try the redistributable. I did try the compatibility mode, but that didn't work either.

EDIT:

The DX package didn't change anything. Really strange how others got it working with no tweaks.

You said you'rre re-installing.

Are you sure that the game had been completely un-installed from before. especially the GTA_SA.set file.

Did you upgrade to Windows 7 since you were able to play it Last time.

and of course you do have the DVD in the drive when playing the game, and not using a no-cd program

I wasn't reinstalling, I just wanted to install it again. I had to do a complete format because of new builds getting released for Windows 7. I haven't tried GTASA on any other 7 installation, only XP, which ran fine(obviously). And yes, I do have the DVD in the drive.

As I understand it the GTA_SA.get file stores OS information when you exit a game/save.

If the OS has major changes that file will try to run with the old information and fail.

If you have a GTA_SA.get file in your San Andreas File Delete it. and Try agein. May need to reboot after deleteing it.

Nope. That file isn't in the system prior to the install date.

I am not an expert for Windows 7, but try to run it in compatibility mode, like Win 2000 or XP.

What it basically does when it crashes is that it gets past the graffiti movie, then it gets to the GTA SA screen with the trademark art where there's several pictures divided up. Then it just crashes.
