This picture was done with the 1.0.3.0 patch.

Picture 1

This picture was done with the 1.0.2.0 patch.

Picture 2

Something more from patch 2.

Picture 3

I'm sure, I'm not the only one who noticed those grainy shadows. I simply switched shader folders and the result was amazing. I can fully enjoy the game now, without paying attention to shadows. You can also play in multiplayer.

UPDATE

Found a way with replacing only one file in every folder.

The result is same.

Picture 4

Download from Speedyshare

Download from Mediafire

Simply change the files in those folders. C:\Program Files\Rockstar Games\Grand Theft Auto IV\common\shaders

has anyone tried copying ONLY these shaders:
shadowSmartBlit.fxc
shadowZ.fxc
shadowZDir.fxc

from each shaderfolder from the patch 1.2? if copying those shaders gives the better shadows then we would get the optimizations R* did with the other shaders.

BTW nice find System796 icon14.gif

WTF, I only realized now, that System796 posted some modified shadow shaders in the first post wow.gif

My screenshots were taken WITHOUT any modified/old shader files. I have these shadows with a plain install of GTA IV with patch 1.0.3.0!

Before 1.0.3.0 the shadows looked like System796 posted it.

(ignore the graphics they are set on medium etc just look really crappy here :S)

also while im here, probably wrong topic, but what is the definition filter for because it
seems to blurr everything as oppose to images being sharp with it off

Yes, these are the mentioned "grainy" shadows.

Yeah, I tried it already. Doesen't give any positive effect. But I'll keep looking for the only files, what affects the shadows.

If you use low or medium shadow density then it looks bad so just change it to high and shadows will look good:)

Do I need to use MagicIV to get this to work? I'm seeing no difference after overwriting the originals. (I've maxxed out the shadow density slider)

To the people who got this to work: Which graphics cards are you all using?

A while ago i saw a mod in this forum that removes the DOF while smoothing the shadows and enhancing the motion blur, is that possible on 1.0.3.0? (w/o blocking the multiplayer)

you only see a difference if you have the shadow quality at medium or low.

If you install this tweak and turn Off shadows, it puts the city under one giant shadow or something.
Well, it looks like it disables sunlight entirely...

Anyhow, is there anyway to disable world shadows but keep shadows from cars and people?
I like the fps boost without shadows, but having cars with no shadows is kind of ugly.

Just wondering...

I have the shadows turned off also.
Does rockstar still host patch2?
If not it's on gtaclans in pc section.
I have assumed they would stop hosting it.

On that note, if I do a fresh install of gta and skip the previouse patches and go straight to patch three, then download your
modded files what will happen?

erm on another note, wtf would happen if I skipped your files =-\???

ok brb Im gonna try a few theories.

Sorry If my post gave people weird ideas... but hey....um.. brb.
