Yeah... too bad it's not an Audi, huh?

Took the bait, eh? happy.gif

I love the E36, I've had one and driven a mates M3 loads of times. They're fantastic cars, the M3 in particular, but it's a simple fact that almost all of them are well over 10 years old now, and things do go wrong with them. My 328iS had a re-occuring problem with ABS sensors failing, had a problem with the electrics (more to do with a bodged ICE install the previous owner attempted) and lots of small, annoying patches of rust. It was also pretty down on power, especially for a car with only 78k on the clock.

Still considering an E36 M3 Evo/GT as a track car/weekend toy. I'm a German fanboi, not exclusively Audi...

Dude, if your going to get an e36 M3 and are worried about things going wrong, consider getting the 3.0 pre evo instead of an evo/gt.

The 3.0 did not have the problem with vanos failures that the 3.2's had.

But dont get me wrong, if you look after an e36 it will last forever. We had our e36 M3 for 6 years before selling it, and not a single thing failed in all the time we had it, it just needed to be treated with respect. The mileage was around 145000 by the time we sold it, and it was still amazingly strong with power and the bodywork was still very solid.

So, if your going to buy an e36, and know that it's going to be thrashed and thrashed and thrashed on track days, buy the 3.0 non evo. But if you know it's going to be looked after, and not tracked and raced all it's life a 3.2 should be fine.

I dont suggest the GT though, it's money wasted seeing they were a very limited run of cars.

Also, remember that the 3.0's are just as good for tuning as the 3.2, and they are much cheaper to buy than the 3.2 m3's.

Ps. by rust patches, do you mean small patches on top of the windscreen seal and around the boot lock? if so, they're mega common rust spots, so they're nothing to worry about.

Most of the ones with VANOS problems have had them sorted now; some cars had no problems, some had the VANOS replaced 3+ times. Even the Evo models can be had for under 5 grand these days, and saloons are especially cheap. The 3.0's and GT's are often bought by people intending to race them as the Evo is illegal according to National Saloon Car Championship regulations and a few other smaller leagues (3000cc limit and regulations requiring either variable valve timing OR individual throttle bodies, not both).

My 328iS had surface rust on the bonnet (stone chips), boot (poorly done previous repair), front wings and roof. The front subframe was rusted and needed to be replaced shortly after I bought it, and I also had rust and seizing problems with the cheap aftermarket coilovers it had on when I bought it.

I'm not bothered about things going wrong on a track car as it will spend most of its time in storage or under a cover, and I intend to pull everything that can go wrong on it (ABS included) off.

Audi is not my car. Only BMW is suitable for me and it will stay so.
Or let's just say: Audi is not my taste.

I drove an ST205 GT4 (later generation) a few years ago and loved it. Go for it.

My favourite car is the Audi Sport Quattro, with the four-wheel drive it's such powerful and was very succesull in the Motorsport Rallye's in the 1980s. smile.gif

I like the Impala, those wheels on the other hand, blech!

Impalas should be limited to 16, maybe 17 inch wheels at the most.

Also, 1969 Dodge Charger R/T, 1965 Jaguar XKE, Aston Martin DBR9 and of course my MR2.

@Flesh-n-bone, thats the first Ferrari I've ever ridden in, and the uncle of the car that took me to the highest top speed I've experienced.

I'd take a Lancia Stratos as one of my many 'favourite' cars.
