First time caller. wink.gif

GTA IV FATAL ERROR: Unable to create depth render target - Please reinstall DirectX and/or install the latest video card driver.

Received after the second R* logo in the start-up.

Dell XPS 1710
Intel Core Due T2600 2.16 GHz
512 MB nVidia GeForce Go7900 GTX
2GB 667 MHz DDR2
Windows XP SP3

Don't bother telling me the game won't run with my system; I meet minimum requirements. I'm not expecting 1920x1200, I just want the f@$&er to run.

Oh, yeah, sorry, v1.02 (so, I've added patch 2 and the latest GfW patch)

I've googled this error. I see lots of posts on it with no solutions, but, hey, I'm feelin' lucky. Anyone want to take a pot-shot?

WTF?

If I was going to download the latest nVidia drivers, WHICH ONE????

The 181.00 ??
The 180.84 perhaps?
Maybe it's meant to be the 185.20 ??
Perhaps I should listen to the nVidia page and grab the latest beta driver: 179.48 ???

Tried the second, those that "NVIDIA recommends that you update your system with the following GeForce v180.84 driver for the best experience on Grand Theft Auto IV" ...

Bullsh!t reports: "The NVIDIA Setup program could not locate any drivers that are compatible with your current hardware. Setup will now exit."

Has anyone the faintest f**king idea what I or it are on about?

your using a laptop... You can't download them from nvidia. You get them with your laptop makers... Can't be bothered to check a go 7900gtx if it meeets min spec of a 7900 desktop gfx card...

but you need to find hacked drivers to install on a laptop gpu..

have you tried using the directx install from your GTAIV Redistributable folder...

Yes. Dell are still issuing the driver from years ago.
Yes, the card meets (exceeds) minimum GPU requirements.
DirectX 9 is already installed from the GTA installation.

Uh...where is it in the GTAIV Redistributable folder???

The latest drivers from dell: July 2006

UPDATE: I used the forceware 180.84 inf file and I've gotten it working. Well... kinda . . .

(After two hours of play.)

Now I get to complain about all the bugs and weirdnesses, at least. Refer my next troubleshooting topic. tounge2.gif

i get that kind of curruption when i change gfx seting in game every time, i have to reload gta to fix the problem. i can play for hours on end fine aslong as i dont change any settings in game.. is this what you did?

if you check the readme it actualy states this is a known problem with the 7 series.. (well when changing settings that is tounge.gif )

also if they work on your gpu, i would recomend the 185 beta drivers, i have tried 180, 181, 182's they seem to be the smoothest smile.gif

Sorry to bump an old topic.

I'm getting this error. Game won't even boot past the legal. I hear a hint of music, then BAM. Crashie times station.

Vista 32, 2 gigs ram, EVGA 8800 GTS 640.

I've updated both the drivers and DirectX - no luck.

Any ideas?
