I seem to be limited at the moment by my GPU. My cpu says 76% used and my graphics says 99/100% used. I'm considering getting a 8800/9800 GT. Do you think its worth it on my system? |
no...wait for first patch and then you can decide better what you have to do and what you really need....and plus for all now, with crisis time prices are on very high

Made no difference. I don't know about FPS, but I still have the same problems as before.
The game keeps loading, with pictures of different people. When I alt-tab, and alt-tab back, the game loads. But I have no in-game menu, and no radar (just the radar blips). I have no money or weapon indicator, except if I die. Then I am resurrected outside the hospital, and I can see the money and weapon indicator for a couple of seconds and then they disappear.
I have no subtitles and no "name of current road", except when I die.
In Romans apartment I hear the *beeps* but see no explaining text.

It's your GPU. It can't handle the game, basically.
Some of the fastest and largest memory 7600's and 8600's can run it, but alot seem unable.

Are you saying his GPU cant handle the HUD and on screen text? Its just a bug or a driver issue...

I use 280Gtx and get 19000 3dmark06 and GTA 4 runs Choppy
after the drivers installation I got.
3dmark06 17000
Which is a total loss of 2000Points

Major problem with these drivers (in fact any of the 180.xx drivers) is that they break SLI in Armed Assault (which I play a lot), they cause horrible flickering....

No, I'm saying his GPU can't handle the graphics, so it doesn't render anything. The majority of problems seem to be people with 78/86/9600 series cards and the drivers aren't an issue, because no-one else has the problem on the more powerful cards.

Tried these drivers. They do indeed give me a small boost in FPS. I don't know if anyone else has noticed but they also enable SLI. I have only tried "Nvidia recommended SLI" so far. I'm not sure if I'm getting any performance boost from SLI though as others here say they get a boost in FPS with just a single card. When I turn on SLI visual indicators, it does show as though SLI is working in game. Major problem with these drivers (in fact any of the 180.xx drivers) is that they break SLI in Armed Assault (which I play a lot), they cause horrible flickering.... ![]() |
You sure? My SLI doesn't work, only shows half the VRAM available in the "Graphics" section.

Both cards need their VRAM, it doesn't add up.
Peopel expecting more then 10% performance increase with the new driver are misguided. Also, make sure to remove old drivers properly before installing new ones. I.e. use Driver Cleaner.

I think it results different for everyone so you are best to try it out for yourselves.

Generally, such boosts I would assign to various issues with previous driver versions and OS problems. In my case (ATI) I have yet to seen such increase in some game performance. Even ATI states figures of 5 to 10% increase in drivers readme.

If you want to make sure SLI is working, or how much it is working heres how:
Go to nvidia control panel.
look up the top of the window where it says "File","Edit",View", next there should be a "3D Settings" menu, click this.
In the drop down menu, put a tick beside "Show SLI Visual Indicators"
now in game you will see a green bar down the left side of the screen showing how much SLI is working.

It wasn't my GPU. Its a bug in GTA:
http://www.gtaforums...&t=379062&st=0#
And as long as ppl with 9600GT cards are having problems I am not upgrading my GPU

In reference to the 7600 series problem I got the same thing... I tried DL'ing the patch given on GTA IV official site and some others i found links for here on the forum. (Including replacing the nv4_disp.inf file) with no luck.
I nor have the radar or text in in-game menus, and I to have the black water. The game runs smooth at 800X600 but I haven’t checked for higher resses as I’m currently just interested in getting the graphs running. I know many of you claim it’s the GPU. But running SLI with 2x 7600 EN GT 256 DDR3 the engine seems to be working, as it runs smooth and with no lag at all. With the 180.84 driver recommended by Nvidia (I´m aware it’s for recommended spec cards, but thought I would give it a go)
As you can see below the radar is missing, but the SLI indicator isn't maxed out. which makes me suspicious to it being a matter of buggy driver / blockade by Rockstar rather than a hardware bug.
Am I totally off on this suspicion?
