I highly doubt Steam will let you preload GTA IV.

Ofcourse they wont, Rockstar isnt stupid.
else its going to be leaked the min they let every1 preload it and somebody will find a way to crack it open for everybody

They can encrypt the files...

and everybody knows how to decrypt them

the thing is that, actually, when you preload a game, steam don't let you dl the .exe, and this executable is released on the D-day

Anyone seen this? 36-54gb for digital distribution? Is this normal? (Serious Question)

To play with all options turned to 11, we recommend having:

Processor: Intel 2.4GHz Quad Core / AMD Phenom X3 2.1GHz
RAM: 2.5GB
GPU: Nvidia 8600 512MB / ATI 3870 512MB
Hard Drive: 18GB Free Space (36-54GB for digital distribution installation)

source: http://ve3d.ign.com/...commended-Specs

Yes.

18GB= rar from Steam
18GB= unpack
18GB= install
------

54 GB

1. Steam doesn't use RAR
2. Steam doesn't pack 3rd party games into one file like their games are
3. There is no installer when you download the games other than Steam's installer and the installer is only really used for adding registry files. You download games already unpacked and put into a folder. The only thing that may have it's own installer is Games for Windows Live.

Might be for Direct2Drive

Since from there you have to download, extract (might be automatic) and install

if they still have it in stock. ho wait! you can camp on the front of the store for the 3 days before release to be the first

Yeah, people will definitely camp and wait GTA IV for PC. Worldwide. In fact, I see them every day on my way to work. The line is getting over one mile long /sarcasm

so you can make sarcasms, but not understand it?

I find it funny that people will state something very stupid (IM) and later on call it sarcastic.

How is this sarcastic? As I understand it, you wanted to prove your point about Steam being a lot faster. Then you wanted to give that point of oyurs more power by ipling that one could possibly have to wait for days to buy retail. Sarcasm translates badly, I guess.

So you just ignore what I said previously and keep raving on? 28 British pounds is 33.5 EUR. I don't know what are you talking about. 70 EUR? WTF?

again, that was an exemple, nothing to do with what you bought
you can easily find sh*tty-blobkbusters game at 70, want some examples?

-tomb raider underworld 65.40

X360:

-guitar hero world tour (game only) 69,99

even [URL=http://www.amazon.fr/Take-2-GTA-IV/dp/B00131SQA6/ref=br_lf_m_1000120893_1_23_img?ie=UTF8&m=A1X6FK5RDHNB96&s=videogames&pf_rd_p=227969291&pf_rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_t=1401&pf_rd_i=1000120893&pf_rd_m=A1X6FK5RDHNB96&pf_rd_r=12YP7GFHNAKZB6PFT63S]GTA/URL] is still 58,99 (6 month after release)

Call me stupid, but are we discussing console game prices here? Waht do console games have to do with Steam? I know those games are heavily overpriced and it's one of the reasons I wouldn't buy a console. This is totally irrelevant.

No, I don't. I apologize for being a second class citizen. Oh, wait....

again, sarcasm, i don't have OF neither (yet)
but who doesn't have high speed connection now? do you still pay each Mb downloaded in your country?

ATM I'm on dial-up as a monopolistic broadband provider in my region is holding the prices too high since they don't have nay competition. It's a matter of principles, I don't give in to bullies. Hopefully this situation will resolve in Q1 of the next year. Typical speed here is 2mbit, with max being 16. Only various institutions (those directly connected to
Carnet) have gigabit lan.

I hope you do realize I haven't said anything negative about Steam. I'm just saying it's not everybody's first/best choice.

Also, does Steam compress data or it doesn't? I mean, if they "compress" 18GB to 18 GB, what kind of compression is that? Stardocks digital distribution system does use compression and it uses 7zip.

got a question, cause I'm not really into this gaming scene..
i bought once a game, that came up with steam. i could not install without being online, i had to create an account and to sum it up, it was totally uncomfortable... the whole procedure pissed me off. suicidal.gif
will it be the same with gta? if i buy gta in an ordinary store, will I have to deal with steam?

What game was it?If it was a source game(HL2, CSS,TF2 etc) they all need steam.And since GTA IV isn't a source game I'm sure it won't require steam if you buy it from a store.

Hi,

I am not buying it from Steam, I have it preordered at play.com.

Last time I preordered a game through Steam was GTR Evolution addon for Race 07 and the countdown disappeared but it wasn't release for some hours till about 5/6pm UK Time.

Also the size of it, I do have a 20mb cable connection but the ISP may Throttle (Subscriber Traffic Management) depending on the time

I would've bought it from Steam, but the taxes got me again.

49 USD for the game, alright... but 61 USD with tax suicidal.gif

The tax varies from country to country, so.. yeah, well, I didn't know Finland was this bad.

I'm wondering when GTA IV will be unlocked on Steam, i already ordered it there.
The countdown indicates that it will be unlocked on thursday around 1 am or so!?
I hope they will allow the downloading and playing of the game earlier, because the downloading also takes quite a lot of time alien.gif
