I'm getting a retail. I agree steam is a great service and I have a crapload of games on it, but I don't like not being able to play my games when my internet goes down (aka. the infamous "could not contact key server" error).

edit: just thought I'd add, the same error happens when you're trying to play from behind a firewall(dorm or such). It happens on most non-valve games. You've been warned.

I had been debating about whether or not to buy the Steam version and I have now decided against. My main two reasons are I want the game as soon as absolutely possible, not when they get around to unlocking the game, then wait for a download.

Biggest reason though is that since Steam automatically updates games if there happens to be a "v2" of GTA IV released that is unmodifiable or something I would like to have v1 on a retail disc instead of Steam updating my game automatically and/or updating the version if I needed to reinstall.

1-you get the game theorically faster by steam, because you don't "wait for dwnload", you're preloading it, the files are on your computer, and the D-day, steam allow you to unlocked them, and you can play it as soon as it's done

2-you juste have to check a box to not allow steam to automatically download update, it won't force you

1- ALL Non-Valve games I have bought on Steam I was unable to pre-load and had to wait for them to finally get around to allowing me to download (Crysis Warhead, and Far Cry 2 are two recent game I purchased and had this experience.)

2- There is no box to "check," yes there is a drop-down box in the local files to tell it not to update, but that still doesn't cover if I ever needed to reinstall the game.

Don't get me wrong - I love Steam, but this is just one game I am going to skip over buying the Steam version. I will still purchase future games via Steam.

purchasing trough steam is just stupid, first you pay the full price you would in the store and then you get no box no dvd no manual and the worst part is it will unlock at the time of the real release in the stores...

so while everyone is playing it on their pc your stil downloading 16 gig of data on steam.
And you probably wont get to modify the files so forget about mods etc

Where do you see a pricetag on steam for GTA 4

Also steam charges $49.99 for L4D while a retailer in the USA harges $44,99.

And about the preload:

Available: December 3rd, 2008
This game will unlock in approximately 1 week, 5 days and 14 hours

Like I said, have fun downloading ~16 GB of data

The 16 GB is full install. I beleive Steam compresses the data BEFORE you dl it and unpacks it later on.

Even then 16 gb, how much will it be compressed?
11? 10 gb? Even then it would be torture to be downloading it while its long available in the stores

AFAIK this game comes on a single DVD. That means 7.95 GiB max. For guys with 2048kbit connections that will mean something like 10 hours worth of download. So basically leave it over night and in the morning you can go play before you even brush your teeth biggrin.gif

Look, I don't use Steam as I don't have broadband AND they like to choose countries with which they will do business (it's probably not Valve's fault, only some publishes, but nevertheless) so I don't care about it, but you are reeking of misinformation.

Lets look at it this way - if you buy retail you have to install it from a DVD. The game there is compressed, so you have to wait until it installs. If you dl it from Steam then it will have to unpack also. It's very questionable which lasts longer (we can always compare).

If you want the game sooner, going to a local store is probably the best bet. I ordered it via mail, so probably the Steam guys will be playing it before me so in this case Steam is probably the better option.

If you don't like Steam that's perfectly fine. I'm not very fond of ti either, but there's no need to attack it with unbased assumptions. It has it pros and cons, so what?

so when a game is 50/60 or 70 (console) in a french store, 70$ in others store, and 40/50 or 20 (TF2 icon14.gif )$ on steam, choice is easy

yes, unlocking is the 3rd, but maybe, for this time, and especially when you know the amount of bandwith steam will have to provide for one of the most selling game ever, maybe valve will let people download a non-valve game before the release, and then unlock it the 3rd

Actually this would be extremely good option. Does anybody know if Steam has done it with some games (can download early but will be unlocked later)?

Yep, many times, but only for Valve-made games. (?)

Now would be a great time to change that.

To play with all options turned to 11, we recommend having:

RAM: 2.5GB
GPU: Nvidia 8600 512MB / ATI 3870 512MB

1. Steam doesn't use RAR
2. Steam doesn't pack 3rd party games into one file like their games are
3. There is no installer when you download the games other than Steam's installer and the installer is only really used for adding registry files. You download games already unpacked and put into a folder. The only thing that may have it's own installer is Games for Windows Live.

No.

I don't know where they took the numbers but in Steam the amount you download is the final amount the files take in your hard-disk for a game (excluding some system specific files, meaning no extra space for unpacking and installing).
