I have tried to play SA since I got IV and I have to say I find
it impossible to play.
The only old shcool one I would play again is VC and that is
only for the memories it has given me, and the amazing theme and storyline.

I tried to go back and play VC last year when I had loaned someone my copy of SA, and couldn't do it. Not because of the story, but because of the graphics and animations.

I suspect the same thing would happen if I tried to play SA. Again, not because of the story -- I love that story, even the parts that apparently make me a gay retarded 12-year-old.

Playing the old GTAs reminds me of this:

The degenatron gaming system plays three exciting games including Defender of the Faith where you save the green dots with your fantastic flying red square. Monkey's Paradise where you swing from green dot to green dot with your red square monkey. And Penatrator where you smash the green dots deep inside the mysterious red square.

Atari much? LOL

Talk about blast from the past- those commercials used to have me in stitches!

@HOratio: good point and I agree. I wouldn't call it juvenile in any sense of the word- if anything, the humor alone is of the mature variety and you're right, a lot of folks didn't get that. Same thing with Shrek movies. LOL

Dumb question. SA was the best game ever made. That's just a fact. IV isn't half the game SA was. Just looks better and has better physics. It's severely lacking. Jesus, do you remember the story in SA? the CHARACTERS? SA was un believable. This "new" type of GTA will eventually evolve and get it's own SA level edition, but we're not there yet.

Vice City is better than SA. SA's story was horrible. And Vice City is cooler. Gangsta my ass.

SA (on PC):
Mods
Online
Improved graphics (vastly so)
More things to do
Resolution past 720p

SA (consoles)
SA... Just more things to do than IV.

IV (consoles)
Online
RAGE
Euphoria
Online
Better story (I guess)

Yep, got the 2600 in 81, and then the first time I saw NES, I thought it was super realistic.

Can someone clear this up for me, please?

You can think that both San Andreas and IV are great, right? They're not mutually exclusive.
Also, if you do prefer SA, that doesn't necessarily mean you think IV is a godawful unplayable mess. Am I right in thinking these things? Because reading these forums you wouldn't believe it...

Hell yea; best game on it? Mike Tyson's Punchout! LOL

I never had an Atari; had Colecovision instead (thought it was a better machine, even now).

I'm not some "fan-boy" who is goin to say every game they put out is my favorite one just because it's "new"...I mean I'm a GTA fan but IV was not great enough to put it on my top 3 list video game list.

Vice City had the better story-line plus had that "gangster" scarface/goodfella feel to it.

Just what I think.

true, the only reason that this is even a contest is because of IV's multiplayer

I agree. And as somebody said in another thread (maybe it was you, Tony?), the fact that there is even a comparison between SA and this next gen game doesn't speak well for IV.

That was me.

SA is clearly the more innovative of the two games and if you compare them purely on a gameplay level and take technical advancement out of it, SA is clearly the better game.

Sure, muliplayer (true, official, gameworld multiplayer) is good, but it would have been a joke if R* hadn't included considering how many have been clamouring for it for so long....

That's a flawed argument-

'...if you take technical advancement out of it...'

I'll give you an analogy: you ever hear of the Cassius Clay vs Sonny Liston fight? It was the day that Muhammad Ali, before he turned to NOI, won the championship. Well, to hear some pundits tell it, if you took away Clay's speed and punching power, its a wrap- Liston should've won that matchup.

Does that make sense? You can't take away Ali's speed or punching power anymore than you can disregard the technical advances between SA and IV.

This argument is tiresome; I think I've said all I can say on it.

Your analogy is more flawed than my argument.

Humans are not upgraded on a somewhat fixed basis due to increases in processing power, data storage or graphic pipelines.

If the playing field were not leveled due to ignoring technology and focusing on design, then games from 80's/90's would not still be in most top 100 games of all time lists...

QUOTE (Horatio Humboldt @ Jun 2 2008, 19:02)
QUOTE
The story is hardly intellectual- no video game story can afford to be that, it would be lost on the masses and likely end up with a low review score because of it. The story is written well, if video games are the basis by which to judge, with believable characters who emote- and the graphics help to boost that so it isn't just a story you're reading/hearing, but actually getting to see/live. There is a difference; but it doesn't make it intellectual, just engaging. THAT is what makes the game better than its competition.

The story is not intellectual in the sense that It's a classic retelling of 'immigrant meets big city and gets involved in organised crime' tale. What does make it differ from most other games of the genre is that it does not 'Dumb Down', the voice acting and script are top rate. Also the one word I would never associate with any GTA game is purile. The games take a cynical look at a huge variety of American conventions and beliefs... from terrorism to commercialism to sex. The base humour almost always uses a clever 'play on words' that a lot of people on these forums (naming no names) would never get in a million years unless it was explained to them. I guess GTA players can be summed up as the ones who get their kicks by shooting prostitutes and the ones who admire the love and research that has gone into making GTA4 a totally immersive, humourous and beautiful game world.

Agreed. The setting is great. The humour not very tasteful but sensational. The satirical background of an american society is perfect. BUT the STORYLINE and the CHARACTERS doesn't live up to all that. Sometimes the mood and tone of Niko feels really off, like he is in a different place and scene from the rest of the characters. R* sacrificed a great deal of the story with the choices given to the player, cause this choices couldn't have being made by the same character and as they have very little effect in the development of that character, the story makes no sense. Also you are presented in several occasions with the premise that Niko Bellic is not a rat and his loyalty isn't cuestionable. Eventhough he killed Vlad, Faustin, Plaboy X/Dwayne, Francis/Derrick, Ray, Peregrino and Dimitri - all former employers and must of them killed for money or convinience. With all these inconsistencies, I can't call this story anything but good.

I've played GTA IV for over 2 months so far and Still haven't reached 100% and I'm still finding new stuff each time I play.

SA I did play for the last few years but why? It was the only ' New ' GTA till now. I don't count the stories since they were terrible.

Also a bunch of pages back I seen the comment that if you haven't played video games for so long then you aren't a true gamer. I have a correction for that.

If you haven't played an Atari or something like it from that time period. Then you aren't a true gamer.

SMH

you sure do know how to f*ck up a game

"I don't like haircuts, I don't like working out, I don't like car mods"

basically everything that made San Andreas good and gave it more replay value, you hated so they took it out and now what do you have? "I'm already bored" You shouldn't have rushed through the f*cking game. "I didn't rush, it was too short". How come I'm not finished then?

I'd have to say SA though. The Phone/Internet/Physics/Graphics/Mission Style are better than san andreas. I'd have to say though IV's storyline would be better if there weren't f*cking spoilers everywhere, which spoiled the game for me.

I love them both, and heres how I will compare them.

San Andreas was the most anticipated game ever if you ask me, and they lived way up to it Rockstar. SA was funner and more realistic. You do fun awesome things in it(Planes, bicyles for screwing around, car modeling) and the realistic(Hair cuts, plane/helicopter training niko somehow knew how to fly a heli, working out, and eating was mandotory.) GTA IV lived up to its anticipation but didnt exceed and the only reason I personally can compare the two is because of IVs multiplayer

I don't know why but I find SA really boring compared to IV, and I hated all the characters. I just didn't like the gyms, driving schools etc, and the city didn't feel real.
But San Andreas did have better missions, it's true that IV kind of ''repeats'' itself, the missions are pretty similar to eachother.

Still GTA IV had the best story and I still love to roam around the city and I love all the little details in it.

GTA IV > GTA III = GTA Vice City > GTA San Andreas
Just my opinion

GTA: VC = Best Atmosphere and Setting.
GTA: SA = Most crazy and ridiculous fun. Everything over the top, tons of stuff to do, super unrealistic.
GTA IV: Most realistic, best story, best characters.

The end.
