How come it's FIB and not FBI? And what does it stand for? It was called FBI in the earlier games wasn't it?

In real life the word Fib means Lie, and that pritty much explains itself.

I guess "FIB" doesn't have a deeper meaning, but I'll give it a shot. Accordning to UrbanDictionary.com FIB is short for "f*cking Illinois Bastards just pronounced as fib by Wisconsinites referring to people from Illinois, how they drive and act."

Why the hate against Illinois? Well, consider this quote from a blog post at chicagotribune.com: "In 2004, Gov. Rod Blagojevich blasted the CTA for accepting ads for "Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas" and the transit authority removed the posters.[...] Illinois enacted a law, backed by Blagojevich, that banned selling of violent video games to minors, punishable by up to a year in jail. A federal judge in 2005 ruled the law unconstitutional."

(And yes, something similar happened in Chicago this year too...)

More than likely this, and/or they wanted the game to feel a bit more unique.

If it was called FBI in GTA IV they could have to deal with a lawsuit and people suing them, same reason as to why they rename area names and car names.

Then why was it called FBI in past games?

And they could've called the city New York and every street and landmark by their actual names, but then they would more than likely have to pay out the ass for their usage, and then the city wouldn't feel like their own, unique, fictional world.

The FBI were never given a name in-game. It was us who said it was the FBI.

Rockstar would get royally screwed if they used FBI

Not really, they even had FBI on their jackets in SA, they also shout "Freeze FBI" at you occasionally.

Fags In Black

I honestly thought this is what it stood for. I remember seeing a cutscene and I thought it was referring to FIB as being fa**ots in black clothing.

Guess I was wrong....

It's a delicate mix of satire and liability.

Is it possible that it was just Niko calling them 'FIB', not knowing the actual name?
I haven't played the game yet, so forgive me if it is a stupid question.

Exactly. And all of the FBI vehicles were called "FBI-something". I think it's been "FBI" at least since GTA2, so it was a bit unexpected. Maybe the real FBI weren't interested in having their name used in GTA4 because of the heavy references to terrorism.

I think the "FIB" will play an antagonist role in GTA V. So I don't think Rockstar wants to get in trouble using the real name. Pretty clever to plan this stuff ahead if my theory is true.
