I f*cking LOVE "The Mountain". I watched it ages ago and I try and show it to anyone I can. Absolutely beautiful work that is.

Agreed. My jaw was on the floor the first time I watched it. Made me want to get a dolly or whatever for movement during a time lapse but they're pretty spendy. That guy really knew what he was doing. I just love the elevating cloud sequences. Time lapse is so cool.. very interesting to see things differently in the 4th dimension biggrin.gif

I guess this is the right topic for camera discussion, I see no other place...
Anyway, I've been thinking about buying some new equipment. I currently have a Canon 350D, the kit lens, 24-105mm L and 17-40mm L lenses. Questions:
1) Would it be worth buying a full frame DSLR over an APS-C (or H)? Are the advantages worth it?
2) What camera would you suggest? I can't decide. 5D Mark II? 7D? 650D?
3) How noticeable the difference in performance would be between a DIGIC 4 and DIGIC 5 processor camera be?
4) Should I just buy a new lens or several instead of a new camera? If so, suggestions?
I feel like I need a change. Or maybe I'm just stupid. But, seeing a 5D Mark II on eBay for, like, $1000 makes my fingers itch.

You have the lenses for it. With having those lenses I can also assume you are into photography enough to make it a worthwhile purchase. I'm not too sure you would get much of anything for your 350d on the used market so if you could afford to keep it you could use that as a backup, and it would be nice to keep a body that has the crop factor on it for certain things as well. I've been shooting almost 5 years, just got my first full frame and it's just been baffling my mind on a constant basis hah. The image quality, high ISO ( which you will really notice a difference with coming from the 350d ) etc etc etc.

If you can get a 5d2 for $1000 I would say scratch that itch. Anything below 1200, for a good condition body of course, would seem to be a pretty good deal.

Your 17-40 will be a completely different beast on FF.. it will be SUPER wide angle..

People usually say glass before body, and they would usually be right in saying so... but jumping from 1.6x to FF is the one time I would disagree. This saying would definitely be apt if you were choosing to jump from say, a 350d to a 650d.

^ Agreed, switching to full frame was a revelation for me. It really depends what you shoot though, if you usually have your lens stuck on the 105mm end of things stick with a crop sensor and get the best bang for your buck with zooms. If you prefer wide angles a full frame can not be beat. I have a 5d mkii and it's glorious.

Hmm. Thanks for the info, guys! I'll try to find the best deal on a 5D Mark II. smile.gif

@rhyn: How's the noise performance on it?

I'm pretty sure you can get very usable ( as subjective as that is ) files up to 3200 with it. I have no personal experience with it, but I know it will be leaps and bounds above your XT.

What would you guys recommend as a decent starter camera? Been playing around with a mate's camera this week, and I can see it growing on me as a hobby.

I'd happily use it up to 3200/4000 or thereabouts if needed. For personal shots it's not even too bad at 6400, obviously noticeable but not too bad.

@ISO 3200: Very usable if you ask me.

Assuming you'd be fine choosing between Canon and Nikon, I would go to a store to see which brand feels better in your hands, then I would look for a used older model. I can't comment too much on Nikon but if you were to choose Canon I would say look for a used XSi ( 450d ) with maybe a kit lens and then look for a 50mm 1.8 too. All that would be pretty affordable.

@rhyn: Damn, those look quite nice. Any post-processing? Also, I'd love to see the original shots (full size, no upload compression), check the details out. @the last pic - low light but still so much detail? That's quite ballin'.

Just found a 5D Mark II for 464 Euros. Ends in 24 hours. I'll be pretty happy if I can get it for ~$700, no shipping and customs costs.

Might as well posts some shots from my 350D.

I don't know if I have the original RAW files still, I had a laptop die on me. As far as editing goes I find I usually don't need to with the 5d mkii. At the most I'll give the odd shot here and there a little levels adjustment just to pump up the black and whites but that's about it. The last shot I uploaded to flickr at the full size I took it, upload compression was pretty minimal, you should be able to click on it and check out the full size upload on the site. The black and white conversion did actually increase the noise a tad on it.

I also got a 50mm f/1.8 prime recently and I love it. Makes photos look so much more professional when there's some heavy bokeh going on, especially for portraits and closeups.

I agree.. I think it may be because I used my WhiBal card to adjust for the lighting, but that didn't take into consideration the reflectiveness of the court which is a orangish yellow.

I love looking back through old unused shots and finding ones I like. I took this about 2 years ago and it didn't grab me until recently.

^ Thanks! I did indeed modify it, but I didn't use that blending technique. I instead made a lot of subtle adjustments to the lighting, vibrance, as well as used a few merged colour lookups.

Is it against the rules to post full-size 1400 pix wide pictures instead of thumbnail links? Because thumbnails suck ass.

Generally we try and keep them to less than 1000x1000. You can always link to the fullsize images as well.
