there just is NO WAY that such big and realistic megapolis ,like LC can be locked down. I mean if there will be ped's who are going home from work, how they will get there ??? just think if such things like in previous GTA's would happen in real life... panic, protests... and so on, and so on....
i think you will be able to explore the city from the beginning (and enter all interiors) ,but this time it won't be so needed or fun, because if you break in in some house, beat someone up, drive over the speed limit you will get busted. and that could make all this mayhem thing too frustrating, that you won't really want to cross the line so much as before (you still be able to do it but it will be harder and not so much fun) because the police would be more real, but you could do small (but fun) things ,like mugging people or threat them with a gun (AND MAKE THEM DANCE OR STRIP NAKED)...

Closed because then you'll have something to look forward to....like the game starts in broker and everybody probably wants to get to the algonquin part so they'll do the missions to unlock it...it gets tempting though....in gta3 i watched the skyline and wished i could go there (i was 9 at the time so i wasnt that good at it) but i got there using cheats biggrin.gif and in vice city i looked at the skyline too and wished i was there.....i found a way to get there not using cheats...only i know how to cool.gif and in San Andreas i always thought los santos was the best out of all the cities although i did like san fierro....
But now in GTA4 its going to be really tempting....since rockstars adding more popups...well be able to see cars driving on the FDR Drive and all the beautiful skyline lights....
But i guess its for the better...

It will be closed off. And that is best for the game experience. It is too much if the whole city is open from the very beginning. I think the will find a cool invisible way of doing it. Like in SA. The heat will get big fast if you cross certain borders. Maybe gangs/mafia will be looking for you at certain connections like bridges etc.

It will be exciting to see what they have done.

sure is a bit less "realistic" but it gives you a chance to learn the section and know your way around with out always looking at minimap.

i know it has not been confirmed yet, and R* themselves are not sure what they are gonna do, but would you prefer an open map from the beginning or closed?

You should of gave the option "I don't know" because I seriously don't. I almost wonder if I would have played the story if SA was open from the start. The story was great, it's just I'm an explorer.... So I'm on the fence regarding this issue.

I voted closed because it is in my best interest...lol

I want it closed but im guessing it will be open but will reset you (more like controll you to turn around). Honestly. Why would you want to see the other island? If you get a reward to make it to the other island than that could mean cheating to the next island is useless. It would probably be gang related to say why you cant make it to the next island. I prefer a massive car wreck and gore everywhere haha! and its blocked off so when you get to the bridge it kinda gets spooky and shows all these corpesssss. lol. Niko will be like 'Amerilrika. Vat cood go wlrong? Evleryting! I guesss Liberlty is crrieme infesteed too!'. And the cars wouldnt be just all one big lump. They would be real cars that are really damaged so you can see doors move with the wind and bodies dangle. and fires would stir up every-so often so the medics and police and fire department wont allow you to pass in the first place. anuj_cop.gif inlove.gif (sounds like a gorey treat, delicous!)

I have to say closed. I just like it that way for some reason. I guess it just makes you think what's in the next Island? Well, thats just me. tounge.gif I say closed.

It doesn`t matter. It will still be fun, and i always do missions first. But if you want my opinion, i think the map will be opened.

I voted for an open map because I usually prefer to do the missions before I start exploring, and at the start of the game all the missions will not be restricted to one area, not to mention the pathetic excuses they give to close bridges like storm warning’s.

If they do decide to close the map I hope they give a good reason.

I also voted for closed. However,it won't be much of fun like in SA, because in SA,there were physically and environmentally different areas/cities.but in GTA 4 ,it's not going to be like that,i suppose.

Open. I like the feeling of being overwhelmed by being new to a huge megalopolis, just as if I were a real immigrant arriving.

It first i was certain to say, closed! Like you guys, i like unlocking stuff and its fun to drive around new land.

Then i sat and thought about it.

When i first played GTA3, aside from doign the missions straight away i just used to drive around, exploring the Portland, going on rampages etc, untill i really wore the streets out. Then finally wehn i unlocked Staunton Island, i never wanted to go back to Portland, because i had burned through it so much as i was limited to that area, that i became bored of it, there for i dont think i hardly returned there after.

The same goes for Vice City, Restricted to the First side of the city made me bored of it by the time i got to the second side of it.

Now this could be just me i dont know but i love the way in Oblivion, right at the begining of the game you are just chucked into the wilderness with a sense of "There you go, do what you want, go wherever you want, there are no limits"

None of the map in Oblivion is cut off, you are able to explore all you want from the word go. Not only did it reframe from allowing me to become bored of my surroundings but everytime i play that game i discover something new, so theres always a feeling of "unlocking something" or achieving something".

So i say give us the whole city from the start! tounge.gif

what reason r they gonna give 2 close down the city? there is nothing!!!!! if they said the bridges were damaged, then u could take a ferry. then they say the ferrys all sank, then they say the airport blew up, and then they say the water is infested with sharks. lol.

If a bridge breaks down, it will be fixed in 3-4 weeks depending on damage.

Ferries, pffff, u can take a differnet boat

helicopter---f*ck it---

swimming? why not? u cant swim, well actually thats a good reason......nvm..... tounge.gif

IMO this should be:

1. There will be war on the other territories.
2. If you complete missions for one territory, the war in the next territory ends (you end it with your missions)
3. You can't go to other areas by air or sea (Hunters and armed soldiers in boats)
4. You can go to other areas by land.
5. There will be closed gates on the bridges, and soldiers with tanks and armed cars & trucks guarding it.
6. You are asked nice to leave if you get to the bridges.
7. If you refuse you get arrested.
8. You can not stop at the gates and break the gate with a stronger car or truck.
9. 75% of the soldiers will not run after you and try to blow up your car or truck.
10. The rest of the soldiers will hop on cars, trucks and tanks and try to stop you.
11. 5-star wanted level when going to other areas early.
12. If you manage to run (Pay 'n' Spray or smth), you can stay in the area.
13. In the streets you will be shot (during the war)
14. In the territories in war there is no trafic.
15. No cars to steal except for the army ones.
16. No stores can be visited (all closed)
18. After all it is really hard and useless to stay in other areas before unlocking them.

Tell me now what do you think.

i voted for an open map because i could never enjoy the missions and just driving around in previous GTA games, i just played through all of them in a row to get to the place i liked. plus it wouldn't be very next-gen or realistic to have a big invisible barrier because of a storm which lasts until you do a certain mission. i want to go through the missions at a relaxed pace and explore the city at the same time.

Yep! I vote for open map too, because all these borders in previous GTAs were created artificially and every time protagonist appears in such a horrible set of circumstances, that was very annoying and pretty stupid! I want freedom!

How about when Niko tries to go out of his allowed area an earthquake happens and the ground cracks right under him and he falls in and it says Wasted! icon14.gif

I'd say open. If you don't won't to go anywhere before the story actually takes you there, then just don't go. It's that simple.

Closed. And I think each borough should have a mob or gang that wants to kill you so if you do try to cross they will most definitely kill you.

Lets say that the Russian Mafia (confirmed to be in the game) are based in Algonquin. If you crossed the bridge into Algonquin, all the Russian gangsters would drive up and waste you almost instantly, because Roman owes them money or they don't like you or trust you.

Closed. Although things will be different, I think it would take me at least two days to actually start the missions if everything was open.

I vote closed, mainly because while you're quarantined to that one small area for a time it allows you to become accustomed to the area, you can become used to it and be able to navigate your way around with ease. When you do missions that will greatly help you, rather than going off to another part of the map and not being familiar with the area in which many of the starter missions take place in. It, honestly, is the only thing that makes sense, game wise. Yes they would like to go for realism but having it closed, in my opinion, only helps you as the player.

...not being familiar with the area...

I thought that was the whole premise for the game - an immigrant in a unfamiliar place, right?
