i know it has not been confirmed yet, and R* themselves are not sure what they are gonna do, but would you prefer an open map from the beginning or closed?

Closed. But not in the old cliche way of a broken bridge, but something unheard of and realistic (and yes, I know most of you hate that word wink.gif ). I like the rewards for completing missions.

i prefer closed because if everywhere will be open in the beginning there it won't be much fun.

i have to agree. i also want closed. i know that people say you don't have to go to places you don't want to, if it's open. but i know myself, i will go and i will ruin it for myself. i just can't help it

I think you'll probably start in Dukes or wherever Roman taxi depot is at and the briges to the other borougs are being reworked or something is happening on the other islands and you can't get there. I want it closed off so I can learn my way around boroughs cuzz thats what I did with SA in Los Santos and hwat I did in VC. It was easy to get around LC in 3 so I didn't care.

Yeah I think I said this somewhere else, I want to have each bridge differnt, and even blocking off some bridges even after we open them, liek maybe after we get off broke, something happens in our last mission which causes the bridges to be broken, so we can get back either, and theres cop boats making sure we dont swim or row our way there ahha, and in that time it the landscape can be altered, then a building that WAS there could be rebuilt or blown up which may create a whole new set of missions when we go back.

Maybe new roads etc.. that'd be nice. Altered landscape by the end of the main missions. Maybe even side missions too! THOUGHTS??

The closed map always brings so much satisfaction when you reach that area and it's always been great fun to see how long you can last in a prohibited area with maximum stars.

Maybe the people that Roman owes money to don't want you moving around too much until they trust you enough/made enough payments/done enough missions.

That could be one way to do it I suppose...

i really don't care how they fit it into the story, i just want it to be closed, because if not, i will not be able to help myself and i will go there. the same thing happened to me in sa. then i just go thru the game way too fast and the new areas loose their attraction

I think the story of why the map is closed is important because in SA I always thought why am i being blown up/shot at by all these police for crossing a bridge?

I think that a consequence system such as the people who are after Roman's debt increasing it or taking money away from you if you broke the rules by crossing borough's would add to the realism

Also, what order do you think we should be able to access the borough's in?

I think if it is a closed map then Algonquin (that's the Manhattan one isn't it) will definitely be the last place

well in sa you were told by the police not to leave the city (LS) due to you (cj) being framed by crooked cops

Yeah, I suppose but it wasn't very realistic that the whole police force came after you was it...

I think that going into different areas when you shouldn't should have different consequences than being attacked and killed

Closed. One of the best parts of the game was getting to discover and drive around a new part of land. If it's already unlocked then there's no suprise as the game progresses. Or have all of the areas revealed at around half to three quarters of the way through the game, then incorperating all of the cities into the various missions.

i supposed you're right, but if you want to make certain areas closed off, there's only a certain number of ways to fit it within the story. i never really got caught by the main storyline. i mean if you think about it, they always have to come up with some reason why it's closed. but to me, it's the same unrealistic sh*t like the rest of the storyline.

i like gta for the freedom and capability of doing whatever you desire, you know - make your own scenarios. i never liked the main plot, because there was only one specific route to get there. just like all the rest of the games. now, however, they claim "things are gonna be different". i'm not buying all this bs, but we will see.

Thats what could really seperate it from the other GTA's. The people of Rockstar have really set themselves a challenge by creating all this hype. It looks like it's coming on well so far. Touches such as keeping the closed map system and tying it in well to the storyline will improve the series and far outshine SA.

I think this is what Rockstar mean to do and I will suppose we'll just have to wait and see if they actually do it.

but you are wrong. R* themselves do not know if they close the map off or have it open. dan houser said it himself. it depends on the testers.

I just meant that they could do this... it's one of many possibilities in improving the series

I was talking about their approach in general by releasing details so early and talking of truly innovative features.

They will really have to work hard to create the game that many of us are expecting

yeah, you're right. well they have worked on this since 2004, and they do say "things will be different", they also say that IV is gonna be a shocker just like the transition from II to III (3D). i think we all have high expectations for this game, and hopefully r* will not let us down.

btw: i can't f**** wait biggrin.gif

Maybe when Niko comes over, and sees the people that Roman is in trouble with, they'll tell him not to leave town, or he will surely be killed. So if you swam to Manhattan (Aqgosomething) the first thing you see would be Gang cars riding up to you trying to kill you with Machine guns.

Definitely closed, I like exploring new land and such. I think they're gonna open things up, one borough at a time. I'm guessing the bridges will be under construction or something similar to keep you from going to the other side.

I dunno... i'm used to that roadblocks stuff smile.gif and the other parts of the LC would be pretty much empty without any missions smile.gif i like when i get something new to explore. So i'd say closed smile.gif

The map should be closed! Explore each location through has you process through the game.

I don't know how they are going to do it and make it realistic. In previous GTA's it was just you couldn't go through, force field biggrin.gif

In SA I did storymissions like crazy just to unlock the other cities, so being locked from the start kind of ruined my enjoyment of the game. But I kind of like them to be locked, but not physically.

Some ideas:
*Heightened gang/police resistance in the locked areas until the storyline unlocks them. (but not as desperate as SA, so you can go to the other areas, but once you are recognized by whoever is out to get you, you'll have a very unpleasant time there).
**You are falsely accused of a crime in a certain area, and the law is looking for you.
**You are falsely accused of a gang killing in a certain area, and the gang is looking for you.
*You'll need to stay in one place untill you get your green card/visa.
*The car you drive is reported stolen and police are on the lookout for it/you.
*You don't have a credit card or drivers license, and this limits where you can drive without being pulled over, or what kind of public transport you can use.
*Your brother/friends are in some kind of trouble, and you need to stay in that area to protect them.

I suppose it's worth slapping a poll on this topic since this question hasn't come up in a long time.

I'll have to say it doesn't matter. I guess it was always kinda cool to unlock a new section in the past round of GTAs, but I could see how it might be necessary to leave it all open if the gameplay and story need it to be open to work.
