Interesting. Not a Russian after all, but a Croatian. tounge.gif

how do you know he is croation ????????????????????

Niko is a Croatian name and the last name Bellic is very Croatian because it ends with "ic" which means "son of".

Niko ( neeko) is also a german name as is Bellic

according to wikipedia niko is greek for nicholas

i'm not saying the character is greek

Joe, that name&surname, that combination is croatian, no doubt at all.

My first name is Elvis, I was born in Croatia(my family was all born in Croatia)...and yet I'm considered Serbian..hum...not much in a first name to decide nationality...now if Niko is short for Nikola, then the character can be either Croatian or Serbian. However, the use of the two "ll" in the last name does confuse me a bit, because its not very common if at all in neither Serbian or Croatian.

I also noticed that its Bellic..now if it was Croatian it would most likely be Bjelic, but again maybe the "ll" is used to make the "je" sound like in Spanish.

It's an interesting name to say the least. I'm not sure what nationality that name is based off of, but what ever it is, I hope it is incorporated into how Niko acts in the game.

Did a bit research on Roman(cousin) and that appears to be "Russian, Polish, Czech, or Ukrainian". This again confuses things if we are going by first name, because Roman is not common with neither Serbs or Croats. He might be Russian after all, or maybe Czech.

http://www.behindthe...oth&operator=or

"Gender: Masculine

Usage: Russian, Polish, Czech, Ukrainian

Other Scripts: Роман (Russian, Ukrainian)

Pronounced: rah-MAHN (Russian), RAW-mahn (Polish) [key]
From the Roman cognomen Romanus which meant "Roman" in Latin. "

Roman Bellic should be the main character's name. Just sounds better than Niko, I think.

"bellic" translates into "Bell-Lick" which means licking of the head of a mans penis.

The "tz" sound is usually written differently when transliterated from Eastern European languages. If the language uses Latin alphabet, it's usually kept as is. If it's Cyrillic, it usually ends up being something like "ts" or "tz". So it does look like it's the "k" sound at the end.

So that means you are an ugly man? hehe, just messing with you.

Personally, I can say I have never seen a full Steven Segal movie...thank goodness. Anyways, I cannot wait to see how they have Niko interact with Liberty City considering the reasons why he came.

Just think of the possibilities, his thoughts on clothing, food, and America's Top Hooker.

I'll never be able to hear the name of the protagonist again without Steven Segaul.
My only hope now is that I can customize Niko Bellic to look like Steven...

Ha, ha. Let's hope so. Though, you'd need to be able to actually replace the model. Even if you can manage to modify the nose enough with the skins, it's not the same without the ponytail.

Actually it would end up being more of a "ich" sound - Bell-ich. Kinda like Darko Milicić or George Voinovich. The "k" sound only appears in most foreign countries that use the Latin alphabet, because most forms of the Latin alphabet don't have the "ć "(ch)..

There are different dialects around the former yugoslavia, two main ones being ekavski and ejekavski. Ekavski is used in Serbia, and ejekavski is used in Croatia, Bosna, Crna Gora. Bellic is in the Serb dialect Ekavski, whilst in Croation dialect it would be Bijelic. Its just that double ll that confuses me, cause that isnt the way it would be spelt in serbian, it would be Belic. The first name Niko doesnt indicate nothing, since its a first name, and first names can be used anywhere. Niko can be a Greek, Slovenian, French etc name.

Platinumserb got it right though...

Sounds reasonable. Is it formed from the root meaning "White", or is it some other root?

That isnt called translating! dozingoff.gif

I seriously cannot believe people are arguing over where Niko comes from. R* has told us he is from 'Eastern Europe', beyond that does it actually really matter? Do you honestly need to pin him down to a specific country FFS? How about we try and work out the exact town he comes from, maybe even the street name eh! Jeez! confused.gif

p.s. I knew that there would be at least one Prison Break reference in the game. Ok so PB's character is called Bellick and GTA's is Bellic but aside from that... tounge.gif

My first thought was that Niko might be a short for Nikolai - a common Orthodox name.
