Magna Carta Holy Grail is nowhere near Jay's best, but it's still an enjoyable listen. Yeezus on the other hand, oh man, that album is from another planet. Kanye >

I don't really think Jay-Z will ever be at 'Jay's best' again.. Everything he does now is kinda half-arsed an pfft-so-what-I'm-rich.

Agree with that. I've liked most of his stuff ever since he came back but he really should've stayed retired after The Black Album.

Yeezus is what hip hop will sound like 20 years from now. (haha, okay, maybe I'm being a bit over the top there but it really is fantastic.)

I'm a bit late, but anyways... Halfway through Born Sinner and it's already pretty clear it's the best album released on the 18th (out of Mac, Yeezy and J, haven't listened to Statik yet). My honest opinion is that Yeezus pretty much sucked and more people would agree if it wasn't Ye. There were decent verses on a few songs but apart from that it's just Yeezy having a good artistic vision with bad execution although a person like him is more or less bound to produce an album like that at some point of his career. I don't blame him. Watching Movies With The Sound off had a bunch of good tracks but it doesn't work out as a whole and some tracks aren't really saying much anything. Born Sinner, on the other hand, is a coherent album with the same drive, passion and thematics connecting each track. Just my opinion, though.

Magna Carta disappointed me as well although I'm not too surprised about that... I read somewhere that Jay's rhymes are those of an old man's, there's a lot of wisdom going on beneath but you can def see the wrinkles, I think that's pretty accurate. Also wtf was up with Nas on BBC...

Eh I've had little desire to play Yeezus since release day, but I'm really enjoying MCHG. I wasn't a huge Blueprint 3 fan, but I think this time he has a nice balance of 'yeah i'm rich' vs 'ok lets get back to planet earth'. I think the birth of his daughter has helped with that tremendously. Jay Z Blue, Nickels and Dimes, Holy Grail, Crown, Heaven and BBC are all tight. He's still good.

I'm impressed with Timbaland's producing as well. Mainly because the ones he did don't sound like Timbaland beats; apart from BBC.
.

I will say I think Kanye's had too much influence on Jay lately. Wtf's with the album cover and name? That's Kanye's heightened sense of art and bravado through and through, not Jay Z.

ED: I agree with Cheat on Born Sinner. I still have that in heavy rotation. Listened to it today, even.

I like Yeezus a lot, I think Kanye is at his best production-wise. However, the very lackluster lyrics are annoying and kind of put me off from replaying it over and over like I can with MBDTF. I know he wasn't trying to top that, but it's inevitable that his past work will be compared to what he's putting out now.

I might have to start messing with this topic. I usually do all my music chat on a different forum, but it's seems like we got some real ones in here.

Lyrically, it's very weak, in my opinion. It just sounds like a bunch of stuff he's been messing around with- in terms of beats, ideas and collaborations with other artists. He's at the top and just expressing what he is feeling in the moment.

Still a couple of 'skip' tracks, though.

I f*ck with Yeezus because I respect when musicians go outside the box and experiment with their craft. Yeezus was like a mash of hip-hop, French House, and Punk. Despite the lyrics being meh, the overall sound of the whole thing was enjoyable.

MCHG was trash. JayZ was never my favorite, but from a sort-of objective standpoint, I think he should have stopped rapping after The Black Album. I agree with Venom, he basically doesn't give a f*ck anymore because he's so goddamn rich.

Some other new/recent releases:
J Cole's Born Sinner was definitely a step up from Sideline Story. The Gifted (Wale) was better than Ambition, and miles better than Attention Deficit. Mac Millers' release was pretty dope too (I don't understand why so many people hate on him though).

I've been listening to Static Selektah's "Extended Play" recently. A lot of great MC's are on it, and though it's not necessarily "game-changing", it's a great listen.

We wouldn't have American Gangster though, and BP3 isn't the weak album people try to claim it is. MCHG didn't meet my expectations, but that's beacause i'm a Jay stan.

To be honest, I thought J.cole's Born sinner was better than both Jay's and Kanye's new albums

I think this is great. I normally dislike the typical Hopsin songs about dissing people hes obviously got less publicity then. This told us a lot more about him like his earlier work. I hope his new album will have a lot more songs like this.

I f*cking love this song:

Loving the call back to Chris Dolmeth and the extra details on the same incident. It's one of my favourite Hopsin tracks.

Tech N9ne's 'Something Else' is out. I couldn't find it in HMV yesterday, so don't know if the UK release date is different, so i've d/l'd it for now. I'm hoping it does well given the sales and recognition he got for All 6's and 7's'. Anyone listened to it yet?

Yeah, I've listened to 'Something Else' it is one of his greatest albums (personally I think Anghellic is his best one). The Doors on the chorus killed it in the song 'Strange 2013'!

Having now listed to 'Something Else' a few times, it certainly is something else. Brilliant album, and 24 tracks. Some of Tech's best work. I feel he's being more introspective than usual, or it's more obvious this time?
