Splendid Finnish pagan/black metal. Very reminiscent of a slightly more melancholy Bathory.

Been a big metal fan all my life and finally dragged my sorry arse to a metal gig (37 years and counting...better late than never right?? ). Previously worked away from home so missed heaps and also just never got around to it.

Got to see The Black Dahlia Murder, Putrid Pile, Whoretopsy and Unravel last night and I wasn't disappointed. So here is my "review" (makes a change to the endless but welcome videos in this thread.... :p)

Never heard of Unravel before...got the groove going early with some pretty slamming stuff. Think Carcass, Slayer meets hardcore punk and brutal death metal. Local boys too. Very enjoyable.

Up next were Melbourne boys Whoretopsy. Brutal slamming death metal with plenty of breakdowns to break your neck. Not a big fan of their stuff but I loved their vocalists manic presence. Was crowd surfing and belting out a few words with the BDM guys later in the evening.

Putrid Pile another band I'd only just recently heard of. Just straight out brutal death but with enough difference in the guitar work to make them stand out from what can be a pretty monotonous genre. Scott is a one man wrecking machine and he finally got the crowd into a vicious circle of death. Bit of trouble early with his backing track and been able to make it out over the guitar but by the end it was all sweet and man, what a voice! Cool guy to boot as well.

Finally the headliners, who ended up playing a bit of an extended set seeing as The Faceless couldn't make the tour...The Black Dahlia Murder. Love these guys so much I was giggling like a little bitch as they got cracking. Stage divers left and right unleashed their gleeful fury upon the front rows and got a few words in on the mic with Trevor (unfortunately one girls night was ended when taken out by a stage diver who thought he was Superman). All albums got the treatment and I particularly loved how savage "Funeral Thirst" sounded. Ended with an epic "I Will Return" (you better come back!!), leaving me with a hell of a sore neck and no doubted further ruined hearing.

Haven't posted on the forums for a while, but felt as though I had to provide a more accurate representation of the kind of metal that Melbourne has to offer than somebody going off the Amity Affliction would assume.

I'm a big supporter of local acts and pretty much listen to them exclusively, so I'll post a few recent bits and pieces spanning over a few subgenres.

BOG - PEAT FOR SCARS (2017) (Sludge Metal)

GREYTOMB - BOUNDLESS INTROSPECTION (2016) (Atmospheric/Post-Black Metal)

GRUDGE! - WITH NO BIAS (2016) (Grindcore)

Almost sounded like the vocals of Joey Belladonna played over the music of Bongzilla or something, nice.

DEADSPACE - LIFE (FT. NICK MAGUR) (2016) (DSBM/Post-Black Metal)

Nick's (short hair) vocals in this are f*cking sublime. He's in Adamus Exul and Greytomb, definitely one of the most talented black metal vocalists in Australia.

Deadspace also find a way to incorporate some really great atmospheric solos into their weird blend of DSBM, PBM and at times post-rock progressions, quite unique.

DEAD KELLY - THE LEGEND OF BORRY, PART ONE (2015) (PV/Djent/Nof*ckinclue)

ABRAMELIN - HUMAN ABBATOIR (1994) (Death Metal)

sh*t, totally forgot about these guys! Shame they only put out two records. First heard them on Triple J's "Full Metal Racket"

For the first time I decided to listen to Entombed and "Left Hand Path" Read a lot about Entombed over the years but never bothered to check them out till tonight. I have to say, I approve.

mmmm...can't get the video to appear for some reason.

Haha, I had a metalhead mother who raised me on a lot of Abramelin so I was pretty lucky in that respect. I caught them earlier this year on the reunion tour with Dave Haley (Psycroptic, Blood Duster etc.) on drums, gotta say they sounded exactly like the records, seem to have done really well for themselves considering the age. Keep an ear out for more Abramelin, I hear they're recording

Got myself a door spot at the Entombed AD show here a few weeks ago but couldn't make it because of another gig, believe it or not I couldn't get rid of the spot any way, everyone either already had tickets or couldn't make it for whatever reason, could have sworn it was going to be easier to give something like that away haha.

More 90's Aussie metal then..
