Sony Computer Entertainment will offer the first software update for its PlayStation 3 games console on Saturday simultaneously with the start of sales of the device.

The firmware update will add support for the PlayStation Network online service and be offered as a free download. It will upgrade the software from version 1.0 to 1.1, Sony said today. Users will be able to access the update from a menu item in the PlayStation 3.

In late November the company also plans to offer a firmware update for its PlayStation Portable. The update will bump the firmware to version 3.0 and add PlayStation Network support. With the new firmware in both devices the PSP will be able to access contents stored on the PlayStation 3 via a wireless LAN connection using a system Sony has dubbed "Remote Play." It will also make it possible to purchase and download PSP games content.

PlayStation 3 Pricing
The PlayStation 3, Sony's first new console in six years, will make its global debut in Japan on Saturday. Long lines are expected outside electronics retailers because supply of the device is limited. Sony had originally planned to have around 200,000 of the consoles available in Japan for the launch but this has been scaled back to around 100,000 due to component shortages.

The console will come in two versions. One with a 60GB hard drive will include wireless LAN support and will cost around $510 while a second version with a 20GB hard drive and no wireless LAN will cost about $422.

International sales of the console will kick off on November 17 with launches in North America, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. European consumers won't be able to get their hands on a console until around March 2007, according to Sony's current plans. The company didn't disclose international availability plans for the software update but it has previously rolled out such updates in quick succession to the Japan launch

I actually got to play one today.

I was surprised at the amount they're allowing for each outlet.
The new control is cool, although 95% the same. The features and graphics... incredible.

Officially:

PS3 blows 360 out of the f*cking water. Hands down.

Is that just in Japan? (The price, I mean.)

I think it is the standard price worldwide. They had already given us some hints earlier regarding the price.

Well the update is out now as well as the Japanese PS3, and it supports homebrew... mercie_blink.gif
After all the battles they've had on PSP, they suddenly decide to allow it? PSP 3.00 fw better support it.
And I read something somewhere about Sony saying you can run your own OS alongside the PS3 one.
Windows anyone?

Not meaning to start a fan war thing here, but you just insulted your self really. By saying people are so uninformed and mocking them you then go to admit that you're sitting this one out and therefore not being informed yourself on the PS3 side. Yet the only anti-360 post i've seen in here is from someone who's actually played a PS3? Not really uninformed are they

I'm sitting it out because the launch line-up isn't that interesting to me. I'm not bashing the system, I plan on getting a PS3 and Wii soon enough.

Only because the actual games don't.

Rumors have it Sony will support user mods for games where developers allow modding (UT2007 being one of them), so hopefully that will leave room for homebrew.

I think it's good for Sony to send out patches quickly, even though it's a bit too early to send patches at launch.

Anyway, what the f*ck is up with this fanboy-ism? Some asshole has rated this topic bad for no bloody reason mad.gif.

I've played the X360 and from what I've see of the PS3, PS3>X360 by a long shot.

The firmware is obviously not stored on the hard drive (it's upgradeable, which would remove the fw) but whatever it's installed on, hopefully there won't be any "bricking" of the units. confused.gif
