Welcome to the GFX Area Resource Index. I created this Index because i thought it would be a better way to go about creating resource topics for the members, this way is better because it's one large topic rather than a large number of smaller topics. This makes it easier to manage and update the content.

Below you will find some useful links to various GFX related resources, such as downloads, tutorials, image hosting websites, etc. As well as important information specific to GTAForums, like rules, members tutorials, etc.

If you have any question about anything posted, either post here or PM any GFX regulars or myself. I'm sure theres plenty or people who would be more than happy to help.

.::-----Image File Formats-----::.

.JPEG
FormatJoint Photographic Experts Group
Extension.jpeg
.jpg
DeveloperJPEG.org
Supports Transparency?No
DescriptionJPEG is one of the most popular and most used image file formats in the world. It's used mostly for Web Images as well as normal images, like desktop wallpapers and graphics. It can be used for lossy compression and lossless compression. Making it a great image file format for just about anything. Though it can only be maded most of when using an image editor such as Fireworks, Photoshop or Pain Shop Pro. As many others don't support the comprssion settings, thus meaning you will not get a nice image, more of a blury one. .jpg2 and .jp2 are the new versions of the image format, with a lot better compression options. Though it is not supported by many, if any image editors as of yet. The 2 in .jpg2 and .jp2 stands for 2000. When the format was created.
Pros
  • JPEG's Compression Settings means you can have a small file, and still a good quality image.
  • Very small file size ratios no matter what compression setting.
Cons
  • Compression Setting not supported by many image editors.
  • Without a low compression setting it will make the image very blury and pixilated.
  • JPEG's 2000 version of the image format is not currently supported by many image editors.

Pros
  • Great image file size ratios.
  • Creates really clear and nice images.
  • Supports very clear transparency and opacity settings.
  • Great for websites, web images and icons.
Cons
  • PNG Transparence not supported in Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 and below.

Cons
    Being re-written

.BMP
FormatWindows Bitmap
Extension.bmp
DeveloperMicrosoft
Supports Transparency?Yes & No
Description Bitmaps are used mostly by games, programs and Microsoft Windows running under the MS Windows Operating System .bmp's care lossless compression (if specified) and a high quality of imaging. Tha catch? Bitmaps are terrible oversized, even the smalled image saved in the .bmp format can sometimes end up being over 5mb in size. Though, if your using it for a game, program of operating system, it's the best choice. It's important to let you know that more programs save bitmaps as only uncompressed files. Bitmaps also do not support transparence, though when saving them with tranparence a pink color will be placed in all transparent area of the image. They can be used transparently for programs. There not a good idea to use on the world wide web though as there too large.
Pros
  • Great image file size ratios.
  • Creates really clear and nice images.
  • Supports very clear transparency and opacity settings.
  • Great for websites, web images and icons.
Cons
  • PNG Transparence not supported in Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 and below.

FormatTagged Image File Format
Extension.tif, .tiff
DeveloperAdobe

It's most used for high color depth images and holds a close relation ship between JPEG and PNG. Though supported by may image editing programs such as Photoshop, GIMP and Paint Shop Pro, most web image uploaders do not allow it's file extention. This is the same for most forum and Content Managment System software as well. Adobe is now the maintainer of the file format.
Pros
  • Very simalar to PNG and JPEG in quality and size.

.PCX
FormatPCX
Extension.pcx
DeveloperZSoft Corporation (Website URL unknown)
Supports Transparency?Unknown
DescriptionThe PCX image file format uses very simple run-length encoding which is a type of lossless compression simalar to that of most other image formats. It was origanaly made for use with ZSofts PC Paintbrush graphics program that was found around the MSDOS erra. It was very popular, though has since not been re-invent for Windows or Mac as far as i know. They primarly use only color plattes, though some have been edited to allow 24-bit images. The image format was extreamly popular back around the time of DOS and some early Windows systems, but is nowadays rarly found. Most programs like Photoshop still support it, but it's not supported by many other, nor any online image hosters. The main reason it is now obsoloat is because it has been replaced by so many other better image formats that support not only better quality, but better compression to.
Pros
  • Great compression.
  • Quality wasn't to bad.
  • Very popular around the time of DOS.
Cons
  • Not supported by many online image uploaders or Content Managment Systems.
  • Not supported by many image editors anymore.
  • Only avalibe on early DOS and Windows.
  • Has been replaced by many better quality image file formats..

Here's a few links you might like to add:

http://www.vectorportal.com/ - links to anything vector related.

http://www.illustratorworld.com/ - Illustrator site

http://www.brandsoftheworld.com/ - a resource site for most of your logo needs. All files are in vector, so no more resolution problems.

Personally I'd lose the bit on formats though, as there's some stuff in there that's kinda iffy and not exactly accurate. Either way, nice effort. smile.gif

jarjar, you should add Corel Draw (X3 is the latest), since Freehand's future is in doubt at best. It's a print-industry standard software package, and does everything Illustrator does for about half the price. Even export AI formats if you need them (along with about a billion more; my company uses it quite frequently). Great vector package, and it comes with Photo Paint - Paint Shop Pro on steriods.

Just a suggestion. smile.gif
